What could be better than beer and beards?
As a guy who recently, and reluctantly, shaved off my beard in preparation for an upcoming wedding, news that St. Louis brewer Anheuser-Busch was endorsing a full-blown beard-growing campaign was music to my ears.
Budweiser, A-Bs flagship beer and one of its best-selling brands, recently announced its Grow One. Save a Million campaign to promote water conservation ahead of World Environment Day on June 5.
The brewer will also donate $150,000 to River Network to help support the organizations watershed conservation projects in each of A-Bs 12 brewery cities in the U.S., including St. Louis.
Heres how Grow One. Save a Million works: Guys, put down the razor for as long as you like, a few days or a few weeks and save on average five gallons of water for each skipped shave.
Since water is one of the main ingredients in beer, its no surprise that A-B has a vested interest in water conservation.
Last year, more than 1,200 A-B employees skipped shaving for one week prior to World Environment Day, helping save about 42,000 gallons of water.
Grow One participants have already pledged to save about 89,000 gallons of water, according to A-Bs Facebook page.
So go ahead, step away from the shaving cream and grow one.
More "shared sacrifice" silliness.
Good idea. I hear the Mississippi is running dry.
If a guy wants to grow a beard then good for him. However, no one should feel like they are killing the planet by not shaving. This is beyond stupid. What’s next? Save water by not bathing, brushing your teeth? Ick.
Woo-Hoo, I'll mark it on my calendar, and then water my lawn, and flowers, and take a longer shower, and double-flush my toilet....
Guess it is okay to use electricity then. I have a beard and I still shave/trim it.
This is silly. First of all, water is a renewable resource. Secondly, as a percentage of total water usage in this country, the amount that’s used for shaving is insignificant.
I use an electric, but may switch to a blade just for fun.
“... using one piece of toilet paper”.
I actually know a family of greenies. They only flush the toilet if a number 2 is in it. Some of the toilets in the house will sit for days without a flushing. Why? Some statistic on how much water is used to flush a darn toilet. Disgusting to me...
Any day set aside with the word 'World' in it makes me gag. For the obvious reason.
Guys, put down the razor for as long as you like, a few days or a few weeks and save on average five gallons of water for each skipped shave.
Five gallons for a shave? If you belong to ZZ Top, then maybe.
Who uses five gallons to shave?!?!?
The proletariat must rise up and sacrifice themselves for the revolution. Sorry, I don’t know where that came from. I guess I’ve lived in green Oregon for too long.
Lol.
Any man who shaves knows that an electric razor will not “cut it” if a beard gets too thick and long.
How about stop making beer? It’s nice to have but if we need to save water.....
I’ll start off by not purchasing any of their p***-water beer... oh, wait, I don’t drink it anyhow. I like REAL beer.
Next thing you know, NOW will be asking the ladies not to shave legs, and pits. Yech.
Bet their house smells.
Do they skip showers and baths, too? You can save a lot of water. :)
Brush their teeth once a week, etc.?
I challenge all my fellow male FReepers to join me in fighting this “green” silliness. Starting today, and for the next week, I’ll be shaving twice a day and will leave the water running continuously throughout the entire shave.
Five gallons? I doubt I use one gallon for a shave. I don’t keep the water running. I fill up a cup and swoosh my razor around in it. Easy to rinse it out that way. Hell, I might use a quart.
The house does have an “odor” and their kids only take one bath or shower a week. ONE. One boy is a teen and the other girl a pre-teen. Their hair is greasy, hands are dirty and the clothes they wear are less than “fresh”. What is weird is the parents look “clean”. I am assuming the forced limitations on bathing is just for the children.
The "pee in the shower" campaign is very popular in South America.
how about crap on the lawn of the nearest democrat?
Funny you describe their “beer” the same way I do. I agree we should stop purchasing their beer to ‘save the environment.’
They are probably a health hazard for the community... And they probably do not believe in cleaning if they don't believe in flushing toilets... Those greenies sound like typhoid Mary...
One boy is a teen. If anyone needs a shower it is a boy/man.
The kids will end up being social rejects. I wonder if the parents realize it? Probably not.
What part of the country? High humidity, high temperatures?
BTW, water in the bowl will eventually evaporate and all is left is distilled urine. Wonderful.
Yup. After 3 days, I have to run hair clippers though it to "mow it" low enough for the regular electric razor.
I avoid them like the plague (no pun intended). I do not allow my daughter over to their house either. Fortunately, their little friendship died off. Their daughter is a nice kid but I didn’t encourage them being friends. I know that sounds awful but since the other girl had lice twice this year, started to literally smell... I still stand by my decision.
I agree that teens need to shower. My son is 15 and takes two showers a day. One in the morning and one after school (he takes weight lifting). I never had to say anything either. Maryland can have some high humidity.
The people who make Queer Beer want more beards in the world.
Strange.
Give me a break...don't we ALREADY have 'Earth Day'? ...and just what does Anheuser-Busch have to do with beer?
42,000 gallons of water saved? Does that mean if it was used it would be gone forever?
“Funny you describe their beer the same way I do.”
Like sex in a canoe.
If you want to grow a beard, grow one. But the Earth will not be saved as a result.
But beer is a diuretic, half a case a day would more than make up for the shaving water.
Freegards
I think they’ve been sampling the product too much!
I've had a beard for over a third of a century (my wife has never seen me without it). And I still shave, to keep it trim.
Here’s an idea for inBev (new owners of A-B,) save water by not making that crappy excuse for beer that is beer. Theres lot of water used in making beer.
Long live homebrew and microbrew.
Me too and I shave my neck, I do it while showering. I don't need a mirror, I know where everything is.
Maryland is beautiful. My brother-in-law lived in Greenbelt. My favorite was Ocean City. And of course, there is DC, Antietam, etc.
But I remember it being very humid. I almost got heatstroke because I wasn't used to the humidity — I spent most of the *running* around Gettysburg. The locals would probably tell you this is foolish, even if you are acclimated.
Remember it rained when we returned to Greenbelt — here in Colorado, a rain can drop the temperature by 20 degrees or more. In Maryland, the temperature stayed the same (really hot); it just got more humid.
I’ll do ya one better. How about an electric razor powered by lithium batteries? When the batteries go dead, they can still be used to make Methamphetamine.
