Rick Perry for President?

Perry for POTUS?

Almost a year after rumors flew around Austin about Perry’s possible presidential ambitions after a pollster made calls to Iowa testing how a generic, conservative, southern governor would play in that state. Yesterday, the rumors got new life after Real Clear Politics reported that they had three separate sources saying that Perry was nosing around the race for POTUS.

A Texas pol who is close to Perry has been telling a few key strategists that the nation’s longest-serving governor sees a vacuum and is waiting to be summoned into the race. This source believes that could happen by late summer. Without fellow Southerners Haley Barbour or Mike Huckabee in the race — and with Newt Gingrich’s early troubles raising further doubts about the current lineup — there could be a glaring niche for Perry to fill.

According to another well-connected Republican, at least one Perry confidant has been very quietly making inquiries about the political terrain in the nation’s first voting state of Iowa. A third Perry associate, RCP has learned, has been heralding a small contingent of Iowans with the time-tested line that is often used by would-be candidates who are leaving their options open: “Keep your powder dry.”

If you like Romney, you'll love Perry. What is it with mannequins and the GOP?

Thought I read a while back that Perry had no interest in the Presidency.

I like him. He has lots of executive experience, knows how to balance a budget, and talks a good game about Federalism and the states. Got anyone better? And by better I mean someone who can win.

The guy that NPR executives and the New York Times and your average Subaru-driving Whole Foods shopper were afraid George W. Bush was? Rick Perry is that guy.

I know some people have issue with some of Perry's positions, but he certainly has a lot of the right kind of political experience (three-term governor of a big and important state). He is also a military veteran (Air Force C-130 pilot).

If Perry entered the race, it would be an earthquake. He would be a taller version of Mitch Daniels with hair. In other words, he would have the record of an effective governor but with television presence. Perry's baggage is less toxic than Romney's, and Perry would probably easily take the lead over Romney, Pawlenty, and Huntsman in the the former governor's category.

I think if Daniels doesn't enter the race, there will be an effort to draft Perry.

The MSM would try to tar Perry as "Bush's Lt Governor", but I don't know if that would stick.

Amen.

On the plus side it would get him out of Texas.

For all his faults, he is looking better all the time as a winner, not a milque toast candidate.

Damn. I held my nose twice and voted for him as governor. I may have to hold my nose once again to vote for him as president.

Rush is on right now talking about Perry. He has been pretty complimentary so far. He says the GOP elites are terrified that Perry will run and they hate him. They have all decided to jam Mitch Daniels down our throats.

I always heard Perry was a RINO and that he championed the Trans Texas Corridor and was invited to the Bilderberger meeting in 2009.

Rush says if Perry gets in the race its a whole new ballgame. He seems to be OK with it.

We’ve had two Presidents of this nation from Texas. Both have been (imho) unmittigated disasters, at least economically. Please tell me how Perry would be better than Bush was, specifically.

The American People are looking for someone with EXECUTIVE experience. The GOP needs to nominate a Governor, a former Governor or Herman Cain.

Perry has lucked out in that he was always better than his opponents, it would be no different if he ran against Obama.

All hat and no cattle. I would be much more impressed if he had deployed the state guard to our border.

“knows how to balance a budget” - I’ll wait till he resolves our current $25 billion (2 year budget cycle) potential deficit before I say he knows how to balance a budget. There’s $9 billion in the rainy day fund that he is not touching...

Better than the alternative, but by no means a great governor. He would be destroyed in a national campaign. I had to hold my nose at the last election and vote for him.
