I'm looking for advice concerning buying a handgun.

BTW. Works for me, I don not own any guns. Just several firearms.
Ruger, Taurus and S&W are all excellent. I've got a Ruger Security Six, a S&W 686 and a Colt Trooper. None of them has ever failed to function with any load.
If you are choosing a firearm for the car only, check out the Taurus Judge. It shoots 410 shot shells or 45 long colt. It is a bit large to carry, however.
I agree...nothing against any other mfg’s or the revolver crowd (I have one or two of those on my “to get list” as well)...just like the Ruger SR design. I’ve had it since SuperBowl Sunday...put quite afew rounds through it these last few months and never a problem.
I seriously think I fractured some bones in my hand shooting 350 grain factory loads out of my .500 magnum. Recoil was unreal. my hand hurt for over a month. It actually broke the reticle of my scope loose. Every round I fired I could watch my crosshairs rotating a little more. I wear jack hammer gloves with it now unless I’m shooting lighter reloads.
pick up as many guns as you can, both autos and wheel guns start with the one that feels right in your hand
don't worry about the caliber of the gun you pick up as most frames come in more than one caliber and you are looking for the feel first then the bore size later

A cop talked me into to spending my loot on it and I love it sooooohhhhhh Much!
He had decided to do something I thought sacriligeous.....He ran over 4,000 rounds through it before he cleaned it to test it for reliability.
Scared me to attempt that but I ran 3,000 rounds through mine and only jam. I had slapped the magazine too hard, one to many times and it bent the feed.
Still, tap, tap and chamber the round it kept going, though I did toss the magazine.
I hated cleaning my gun the first time and it took two days. What a mess.
I shot everything through it. Winchester, Hornady, surplus... no problemo.
Worth every penny of the $1,700 I spent and I am getting another later this year.

Yeah, you can’t beat the Glock. I wish I had known before I bought my Ruger 9mm. It’s been a damn nice gun for me, but a bit underpowered. Why the Glock 32 over the Glock 40?
1.) Go to a firing range and rent different kinds until you find some that you feel comfortable with.
2.) Buy the largest caliber weapon you can accurately fire.
3.) Practice.
Many people choose a CZ-82 for a car gun.An excellent Czech gun costs ~ $200.
It can be carried cocked and locked with 13 rounds.
Ammunition is Makarov 9x18 95 gr JHP.
Just the power of the 357sig for me. I coulda gone with either, but tried both and stuff with 357.
Some jams are not the fault of the weapon as they are the fault of the shooter. For instance, almost any Glock can ‘stove pipe’ if the shooter is limp wristed. IOW a less firm recoil stance (resistance) presented by the shooter. Limp wristing takes some of the energy out of the slide and slows the return.
I'm not a big fan of the .357 but a 4 in stainless .357 would be my choice.
In the end the best post will be the one that says this:
Go to a local dealer. Pick out a bunch of them. Go to the ranch and shoot them.
If you can carry it, shoot it straight, and it will go bang every time you pull the trigger; thats the gun you want.
A gun that doesn’t fit your hand or that gives off too much recoil to aim straight, or if you cannot hold it up....it is just a piece of metal the commies want to take away from you.
p.s. i carry a CrimsonTrace Ruger.380 when only wearing shorts and sandals as it is invisible as i live in a fairly rural area my daily carry gun is a Star.40 that's really not that much bigger than the Ruger
but if i think i need more than that i carry either a S&W M59 or my S&W 4516
all depends on the situation and climate/season
also, think twice before ever leaving any gun in you car unless locked in the trunk, even home...
