Presumed Innocent, Anyone? (Ben Stein on the Strauss-Kahn case)
spectator.org ^ | 5/18/2011 | spectator.org

"3.) The prosecutors say that Mr. Strauss-Kahn "forced" the complainant to have oral and other sex with him. How? Did he have a gun? Did he have a knife? He's a short fat old man. They were in a hotel with people passing by the room constantly, if it's anything like the many hotels I am in. How did he intimidate her in that situation? And if he was so intimidating, why did she immediately feel un-intimidated enough to alert the authorities as to her story?

6.) People accuse other people of crimes all of the time. What do we know about the complainant besides that she is a hotel maid? I love and admire hotel maids....I am sure she is a fine woman. On the other hand, I have had hotel maids that were complete lunatics, stealing airline tickets from me, stealing money from me, throwing away important papers, stealing medications from me. How do we know that this woman's word was good enough to put Mr. Strauss-Kahn straight into a horrific jail? Putting a man in Riker's is serious business. Maybe more than a few minutes of investigation is merited before it's done.

7.) In this country, we have the presumption of innocence for the accused. Yet there's my old pal from the Ron Ziegler/ Richard Nixon days, Diane Sawyer, anchor of the ABC Nightly News, assuming that Mr. Strauss-Kahn is guilty. Right off the bat she leads the Monday news by saying that Mr. Strauss-Kahn is in Riker's... "because one woman stood her ground..." That assumes she's telling the truth and he's guilty. No such thing has been proved and it's unfortunate for ABC to simply assume that an accusation is the same as a conviction. .."

You are right!Wealth and power do not a tyrant make.

HOWEVER, a guy who wants a squeeze can get it very easily, he doesn’t have to force himself on a maid. He can just whip out a Mont Blanc pen or a platinum AmEx card at any bar and he’ll have a choice.

Now the pen or AmEx card may not work in Minot, North Dakota it will certainly work in D.C. or NYC.

Lotta people thought Condit offed the girl. Turned out to be an illegal alien murderer, years later.

Oh really. You know that for sure?

I don't believe that for one moment.

The question is...who wanted to get rid of him? Everyone knew he was a bad boy so, of course, such allegations would be believed immediately.

Yes, you can. Some people become so fearful they put up with anything, like walking into a gas chamber without any resistance.

I don’t believe the MSM reports are complete or unbiased. However, something did happen such that the big cheese was thrown into jail. Now it’s up to the unbiased, fair, and efficient NY court system.

They were in a hotel with people passing by the room constantly

Stein is full of sh*t. The other guests had checked out when they were supposed to at noon. A couple of days ago, a FReeper posted detailed info on the rooms on every floor in the Sofitel. Kahn's suite was on a floor with very few other rooms.

I agree. This man has been brought down so hard and so fast that it’s hard to not believe there may be some kind of conspiracy behind all this ugliness. He has ties to the most powerful people in the world. It doesn’t make sense.

A $3500/night suite at a midtown Manhattan hotel doesn’t have people passing by. They have restricted elevators for which you need special key/passes. The only people who are not guests on that floor (with very few suits per floor) are the staff. And you cannot hear from one suite to the next. For that kind of $, those rooms are well insulated.

According to the consensus here, the dude is a “Socialist”, therefore, and quite obviously: GUILTY!

[2] Women accusers are always right! (Ask anyone who’s been accused of “sexual harassment”.)

[3] It’s a cultural thing. It dates back to the Puritans and their views on sex.

If you never remove your tin foil long enough for your head not to bake it doesn’t make sense.

Otherwise, one honest DA, one honest judge, an actual rape victim whose forensic exam backed up by the hotel security video explains things admirably.

If you truely believe everyone is for sale and there is nobody anywhere who doesn’t have a price then I suppose this must be terribly upsetting.

You cannot force someone to do that kind of sex in you.

Sure you can't. How about, "Open your mouth and if you bite me I'll rip your ears off."

Since Ben Stein is so dammed sure, I’m certain he’ll agree to be ass raped if he is wrong.

Step on up Ben.

Fear and shock and pain from being manhandled can put a person into a temporary paralysis where their mind freezes and they kind of shut down for a short period of time, the assault seems like it’s happening to someone else. They can be easily controlled at that time. Never say a person should do this or that at a time of great stress, you don’t know what you would do in a time of attack. She’s not a Green Beret you know.

It is so irritating to see in these posts the victim being blamed and accused being found guilty. Nobody here knows what happened!

I don’t know but if the reports are correct he got out of there very quickly after the incident including leaving his cell phone behind and went right to the airport. I am guessing an experienced traveler would not go anywhere without his phone.

He apparently didn't think he'd done anything he wasn't already used to getting away with in France.

Boinks the maid at noon. Checks out at 12:28. Has lunch with one of his exes and their Columbia grad student daughter. Heads for the airport. Realizes he forgot his phone and calls the hotel at 15:30. They offer to have someone bring it out to him. Gotta love that Sofitel service! Instead, surprise! The Port Authority Police show up a few minutes before wheels up.

1. This is not a court of law, so presumption of innocence is not a right.

2. We don't know what happened in the room for certain, but we DO KNOW that Strauss Kahn has changed his story from “I wasn't there I was with my daughter” to “It was consensual” to “She is too ugly to rape” and finally to “This is a plot by my rivals in the next French elections.”

Somehow that can cause people to not give his word equal weight to that of a maid.
