NEW YORK — Dick Cheney has finished his memoir, according to his daughter, and the book is scheduled to come out on Aug. 30.

Liz Cheney said that the former vice president’s manuscript was turned in at the beginning of the month. She said the book, currently being edited, will be “very straightforward,” with “a lot of in-depth analysis of really critically important issues.” Cheney’s memoir, “In My Time: A Personal and Political Memoir,” is being published by Threshold Editions, a conservative imprint of Simon & Schuster run by Republican strategist and former Cheney aide Mary Matalin.

No...as opposed to people who don’t go around ruling out everyone who dares to have any opinions that deviate even one iota from their own.

I don’t recall that being something that Dick Cheney ever supported.

Maybe you should just get over yourself. Maybe that’s it.

You admit your ignorance of this basic political knowledge and tell me to get over myself.

KARL: OK, “don’t ask/don’t tell” — you’re a former defense secretary — should this policy be repealed?

CHENEY: Twenty years ago, the military were strong advocates of “don’t ask/don’t tell,” when I was secretary of defense. I think things have changed significantly since then. I see that Don Mullen — or Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has indicated his belief that we ought to support a change in the policy. So I think — my guess is the policy will be changed.

KARL: And do you think that’s a good thing? I mean, is it time to allow gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military?

CHENEY: I think the society has moved on. I think it’s partly a generational question. I say, I’m reluctant to second-guess the military in this regard, because they’re the ones that have got to make the judgment about how these policies affect the military capability of our — of our units, and that first requirement that you have to look at all the time is whether or not they’re still capable of achieving their mission, and does the policy change, i.e., putting gays in the force, affect their ability to perform their mission?

When the chiefs come forward and say, “We think we can do it,” then it strikes me that it’s — it’s time to reconsider the policy. And I think Admiral Mullen said that.

Dick Cheney rarely takes a position that places him at a more progressive tilt than President Obama. But on Monday, the former vice president did just that, saying that he supports gay marriage as long as it is deemed legal by state and not federal government.

Speaking at the National Press Club for the Gerald R. Ford Foundation journalism awards, Cheney was asked about recent rulings and legislative action in Iowa and elsewhere that allowed for gay couples to legally wed.

“I think that freedom means freedom for everyone,” replied the former V.P. “As many of you know, one of my daughters is gay and it is something we have lived with for a long time in our family. I think people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish. Any kind of arrangement they wish. The question of whether or not there ought to be a federal statute to protect this, I don’t support. I do believe that the historically the way marriage has been regulated is at the state level. It has always been a state issue and I think that is the way it ought to be handled, on a state-by-state basis. ... But I don’t have any problem with that. People ought to get a
shot at that.”

Cheney at odds with Bush on gay marriage
Vice President Dick
Cheney, whose daughter Mary is a lesbian,
drew criticism from both proponents and foes
of gay marriage Tuesday after he distanced
himself from President Bush’s call for a
constitutional amendment to ban same-sex
marriage.

At a campaign rally in this Mississippi River
town, Cheney spoke supportively about gay
relationships, saying “freedom means freedom
for everyone,” when asked about his stand on
gay marriage.

“Lynne and I have a gay daughter, so it’s an
issue our family is very familiar with,” Cheney
told an audience that included his daughter

President Bush DID NOT give us bambi!

I disagree.

Bush refused to defend himself or fellow Republicans. This surrender allowed a continuous and savage eight year attack by the Democrats and their media severely damaging the Republican brand.

Bush never had a bad word to say about anyone, except Conservatives. He personally and derisively called those wanting secure borders “vigilantes” and on another occasion said that those opposed to his amnesty plan “don’t want to do what’s right for America.”

The political breakdown in the US is roughly 40% left, 20% middle, 40% right. The only way a Republican President can get to a low 22% ~ 26% approval rating is to have alienated over a third of his base voters.

Conservatives did not sit on their ass.

They got out and voted.

But independents voted for the black guy and minorities and youth did too.
Used to be if 55 percent of whites voted for you then you won...no longer

And Republicans like Bush wanted even more Democrat voting immigrants here and we got them....everybody happy now?

Unless they start to get conservative we lose and we can’t pander to them quick enough without becoming Dems
Bush did many good things but he fumbled a lot too...an A on war...a B plus on judges and exec orders but B minus overall as leading to conservatism and he lost the base which hurt the 2008 nominating process

Which btw well be repeated unless we close early primaries now

I fear GOP is cracking up under the weight of institutional lack of social conservatism which lends itself to lackluster candidates said beltway wonks think will be loved by the media

I like Cheney but he is off the map on this one and highly subjective.

Just because he has a homosexual kid doesn’t mean he should ditch his values
I have an aunt I’m crazy about...lesbian...very old...I don’t support homosexual marriage to support her..though not sure she wants it anyhow

My daughters as young adults believe in things don’t ... I support those things and say times change so as not to piss then off

And if he really equates homo marriage with normal marriage then he’s not all we hoped he was period

Things like that are an inducement for me to live a healthy lifestyle. Live long enough and you'll get to see the younger generation come around to your thinking. And then you can watch your kids scratch their heads at their own young adult childrens' ideas.

You are obviously loyal to GWB, not conservatism. That’s fine. It’s your right. But your FR page says it all. REAL conservatism to you apparently means loyalty to a certain man. And don’t compare Reagan, you will embarrass yourself. Reagan led a liberal congress to the right. Bush led a conservative congress to the middle.

So... what’s the problem with what he said?

It’s an issue for the states, not the federal government. I don’t disagree, do you?
