UK Daily Mail ^ | 5/19/11 | Daily Mail Reporter

We've all undertaken home improvements but these residents in flood-stricken Mississippi have had to embark on major construction projects just to protect their houses and livelihoods.

These homes in Vicksburg are all situated along the Yazoo River, a tributary of the overflowing Mississippi River, and their owners have surrounded themselves with tons of earth and sand.

With questions over whether the main levees that protect the area from floods would hold, these farmers took no chances and have so far saved their homes and crops from destruction.

Sorry for the headline change: UK Daily Mail uses impossibly-long headlines, which can’t be posted on FR.

Every government agency from the city zoning department to the United Nations Environment Programme will come down on them HARD.

I wonder if they conducted environmental impact studies before building those damns? The EPA will surely be interested to see their data—in triplicate.

Exactly. Good thing these people didn’t wait for the federal government to give them a handout!

One thing I love about having a Democrat in the White House, is that nostalgic notion that natural disasters are actually caused by nature.

Hopefully, though, we'll soon return to the concept that the president causes natural disasters.

The downside, of course, is that the government can more easily identify those homeowners who still have individual initiative and persecute them for it.

I’ve gotta tell you...you would not believe what is going on here in Alabama after the April 27 tornados. Same type thing. Most not waiting for the federal government to provide. Here in the state and people from all over the country are providing for so many people who lost everything they own. I mean everyday needs like soap, cleaning supplies, baby formula, underwear, school supplies, diapers, pet food and the supplies are still coming! Thank you everybody! If you want to help call a church in Alabama and I am sure they can tell you what to send and where to send it!

How come some people’s houses get saved but other people’s are underwater? It’s not fair. Not everyone has a bulldozer and enough dirt to do this. They should be required to wait for the govt to protect their homes like everyone else. Until all houses can be saved, no houses should be saved. /s

That was one of the few things I really liked about GWB. He had a talent for unleashing the worst natural disasters in heavily democratic voting areas.

You must be from the government and have to help. /s

One thing I've learned over the years, if you want something done right, do it yourself.

Helps if you own a construction company though.

Two thoughts:

1. They sure know how to keep out illegals - a giant mote with alligators.

2. They didn’t have to wait for the government to come to their rescue.
