How about a National Obamacare Waiver?
The Heritage Foundation ^ | 05/18/2011

Posted on 05/19/2011 11:58:15 AM PDT by george76

If you knew a dangerous virus was about to hit America and that you could beg the government for a vaccine, you'd probably do it, wouldn't you? That's just what states and businesses alike are doing right now in preparation for Obamacare. But rather than seeking a vaccine, they're asking for waivers from the law's onerous requirements.

To date, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has approved 1,372 Obamacare waivers, covering 3.1 million Americans. Yesterday, The Daily Caller reported that among HHS's most recent round of 204 Obamacare waivers, "38 are for fancy eateries, hip nightclubs and decadent hotels in House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s Northern California district." That's right: Nearly 20 percent of exemptions from Pelosi's crowning health care achievement were doled out in her backyard.

If that's not enough irony for you, try this waiver on for size: On Monday, the Las Vegas Sun reported that Nevada—Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's home state—received a partial statewide Obamacare waiver, too. If you're keeping score, Reid was Pelosi's counterpart in the Senate fighting to get Obamacare passed into law. Now his state will be one of three to get a waiver from the law's requirements, while the rest of America suffers.

...

It makes sense that labor unions, states and companies of all sizes want to escape Obamacare's costly requirements. That's because it's clear that Obamacare already isn't working, even though the law is barely out of the gate. But granting waivers here and there merely postpones the effects of the law for a couple of years. It's not the solution America needs. A better idea would be to repeal Obamacare and grant America a permanent nationwide waiver.

I have a stupid question. If Obamacare is such a great idea, and will result in coverage for all, cut healthcare costs, etc. then WHY ARE SO MANY SEEKING WAIVERS?

And, why are the waivers being granted, if the administration feels that this law is going to deliver healthcare to all at lower cost? Why would the subject of waivers be discussed in the first place, if Obamacare was going to solve all of our healthcare problems?????

Perhaps a stupid question, but, it makes you wonder why so many seek exemption from such a wonderful law. (sarcasm)

With all the waivers being granted, does this not mean that the ones who do not get waivers will be subsidises those who do, increasing our healthcare costs?

I think you are right. The costs of everyone else will increase, to compensate for all of those who are getting waivers.

I agree, and if the voters signify their concurrence with this idea in 2012 then the idea at least has a chance of being implemented.  If they don't, then "we the people" deserve what we get I suppose.

Actually, the people voted their opposition to Obamacare in 2010 (among other things).  Problem is, the President and 2/3 of the Senate weren't on the ballot.

To: george76; All

Will any kind of waiver include a provision that the recipient cannot use an emergency room unless they provide cash up front?

so simple it should be a talking point for ALL: “hearings on waivers NOW”.

4 simple words. Hearings on waivers now.

A political grand slam for republicans. Hearings on waivers NOW!

You don't need to repeal it. A Republican President could just grant every single American a waiver. Thus, no need to deal with congressional dems in congress who would filibuster or shoot down attempts to repeal. Stroke of the pen - law of the land. Kinda cool.

Under what legislation may these wavers exist? Surely they are not just a matter of a bureaucrat saying “ok, don’t worry about it.”

All those who question the granting of waivers are not brilliant enough to understand the reasons why.

“Perhaps a stupid question....”

Not a stupid question but one which is not welcome. It will probably be answered with, “Are you serious, are you serious?, as the ex-Speaker answered a question about the Health Care Legislation’s constitutionality recently.

They will characterize all their opponents as knuckle-dragging stupid morons who aren’t as brilliant as they are and who haven’t the mental capacity to think as clearly and brilliantly as they do.

They are the epitome of tyrannical, psychotic,
lunch-money-stealing thugs with power.

IMHO

Yep. We do, lock, stock, and barrel. Two thousand pages of onerous crap won't be negated by a waiver. There is lots more in there than just an insurance mandate.

Fine, I'd love it but it will take fillibuster proof majorities in the legislature and the President's office. A very tough road to hoe. If the Pubs can't get that but can get the President's office then giving everyone a waiver would help destroy Obamacare without the necessity of legislative success.

Yep, we have our work cut out for us. Time to print up another batch of "It's the economy, stupid" bumperstickers and do battle.

Maybe if we can get the White House back something can be done by executive order...
