Check the date in the first sentence when Congress instructed the committee of commerce to buy the Bibles ... Sept. 11.

Somewhere I read on the library of Congress web site this was one of the first acts of Congress. Heading to work right now and don’t have time to search, but I’ve printed it before and used it as a teaching tool. I use this LOC exhibit a lot when teaching Sunday school.

BFL

So I find this post really interesting and do a google on Aitken Bible and I find this:

“The Continental-Confederation Congress, a legislative body that governed the United States from 1774 to 1789, contained an extraordinary number of deeply religious men. The amount of energy that Congress invested in encouraging the practice of religion in the new nation exceeded that expended by any subsequent American national government. Although the Articles of Confederation did not officially authorize Congress to concern itself with religion, the citizenry did not object to such activities. This lack of objection suggests that both the legislators and the public considered it appropriate for the national government to promote a nondenominational, nonpolemical Christianity.”

This is from the Library of Congress.

For those who don’t know, “polemical” means controversial. Does anyone in their right mind believe that the public considered only “nonpolemical” Christianity to be acceptable? Note that we just finished a war against the Government and Church of England! Our brands of Christianity were so polemical, 1000’s of people died for them.

I have always wanted a copy of this Bible, particularly since I do Rev War reenactments, but it is expensive. Hopefully someone will publish a more affordable version.

I'd like to have a copy with the commemorative and the historical pages, too.
You'd think that some company would want to sell us some copies.
They'd make great gifts, as well as school text books.
Think how many churches would like to buy copies of this historical Bible.

Do you know who owns the copyright to this version? If I knew who was publishing it now, I would write to them with a suggestion for a more affordable version. It would sell amazingly well- I just know it.

Wouldn't the original copyright have expired by now?

Sad that COngress went from approving(not paying for) the printing of Bibles to today's accomadations of every non-Christian book available.

No, I don't.
I'd guess that a book that old, would no longer be under copyright.
But I don't know.

I did find this bit of information, while searching for the copyright.

Your find is for Jane Aitken, not Robert Aitken, BUT I believe you found the answer to the copyright issue. Thanks.

Yes, this is not Robert Aitken’s Bible the rather the First American Translation, published by his Daughter Jane.

I hoped it might lead some others to find a similar site for Robert's work.

One of the Bibles studied at that time was the Geneva Bible.
Here is an online Geneva Bible 1599 with and without footnotes.
This is worth bookmarking.
