Skip to comments.Obama at AIPAC: Let the Fun Begin

President Obamas advisors wanted him to get out in front of Prime Minister Netanyahus address to a joint session of Congress on Monday. So they preempted Bibis own peace proposal by having Obama call for Israel to return to its 1967 borders, give or take a few land swaps.
There was one problem with the timing. It overlooked the fact that President Obama is addressing the largest gathering of AIPAC ever this coming Sunday, with 10,000 pro-Israel activists in attendance. Itll be fun to see what happens. Here is Obama who just became the first president to ever call on Israel to return to the 1967 lines going in front, just three days later, of the largest annual gathering of Jews and Israel supporters. What were the Presidents advisors thinking?
The President will no doubt be respectfully welcomed and the organizers have already asked the crowd not to boo. But the Presidents speech will have zero credibility and he may as well not bother.
When he last addressed AIPAC in June 2008 Obama had clinched, just the night before, the Democratic nomination for President. I was in the audience and I heard him say the following words: Become a Jewish Week Facebook Fan Today!
There are those who would lay all the problems of the Middle East at the doorstep of Israel and its supporters as if the Israeli Palestinian conflict is the root of all trouble in the region. These voices blame the Middle Easts only democracy for the regions extremism. They offer the false promise that abandoning a stalwart ally is somehow the path to strength. It is not; it has never been and it never will be.
Our alliance is based on shared interests and shared values. Those who threaten Israel threaten us; Israel has always faced these threats on the frontlines and I will bring to the White House an unshakable commitment to Israels security.
Hmmm. Unshakable commitment? How, Mr. President? By pressuring Israel to return to suicidal 1967 borders that would give it a girth of just 8 miles near Tel Aviv?
And how could Obama, on the one hand, condemn those who blame all the Middle Easts ills on Israel and on the other hand come dangerously close to advancing the same argument by making the highlight of his talk on the Middle East the call for Israel to transcend its stubbornness and agree to indefensible borders?
This speech at the State Department was supposed to be about the Arab pro-democracy movement. It was meant to convey American support for Arab freedom. Yet, true to Obamas curious obsession with Israel, its most memorable line, and the one used as a headline by the worlds leading publications, was the change in American policy to pressure Israel back to the 67 lines without demanding any similar concession from the Palestinians. Couldnt the President have waited just a little bit before talking about Israel in the same speech as Mubarak, Assad, and Qaddafi? Could he not have devoted just a single speech without Israel as a distraction to the momentous and welcome changes in the Arab world in which hundreds of millions of people are tasting freedom for the first time?
In throwing in such an inflammatory demand of the Middle Easts sole democracy and a state that is just a crumb compared to the vast Arab lands that surround it, the President knew full well that his pressure on Israel would dominate the speech and feed the lie that Israeli intransigence is the cause of the turmoil in the Middle East.
What a shame the President gave this foolish speech. He was just beginning to win over many of his detractors by finally showing he had a backbone by killing Osama bin Laden in a daring raid and participating, if not leading, in the bombing of Qaddafi. The day before the speech he had enacted sanctions against Assad of Syria and held him accountable for slaughtering his people. It was a new Obama, standing up to tyranny, sounding the clarion call for freedom, warning tyrants they would face retribution. Now were back to the same old Obama, weak on dictators and tough on Israel.
On Assad the Presidents remarks were positively stupefying. The Syrian people have shown their courage in demanding a transition to democracy. President Assad now has a choice: he can lead that transition, or get out of the way. Huh? Assad? Transition to democracy? Youve got to be kidding. Itll be a cold day in hell before that murderer ever relinquishes power.
None of this is credible and the President knows it.
It was to be hoped that the American President would have come out to support the Arab spring as soon as it began. Instead we got Obamas equivocations on Mubarak and then an endorsement of his departure only after he had been pushed out by the Egyptians. On Libya the President ceded leadership to the British and the French. On Syria he waited weeks before taking any action against Assad and then left the door open for him to remain President, even as he continues to slaughter his people.
How sad that now, months after the Arab uprisings began, when President Obama has finally decided to give a major policy speech supporting the Arab right to be free, he squandered the opportunity by yet again dumping on Israel.

Don’t boo. Just stand up and turn your back on the idiot.
American Jews vote democrat more often than not. Methinks that may change in 2012.
I’m not gonna hold my breath...
Nothing angers this thin-skinned crypto-Muslim like being publicly humiliated.
Here's another idea...just stand up and turn your back on the Marxist as$wipe.
Hope they have their shoes ready.
You are right mojito...his enormous ego is his downfall.
I hope they ignore that “advice” and then kick their leader kick out on his arse.
To hell with that, MOON HIM!
Hez du sehen in deine lieben? Farfallen schlemzel mit koph aufen tookis!
I now firmly believe that Obama had nothing to do with the raid on UBL. I believe that it started, probably by the CIA, and then proceeded when he had no choice but to go along with it.
>>>American Jews vote democrat more often than not. Methinks that may change in 2012.
Because their politics trumps all else in their lives.
Canadian Jews just went for conservatives by 56% in their recent election. The remaining 44% was split between two other parties.
I hate to say it, but most of them are statists, believe they will make big bucks on Barry’s statist policies, and will slobber on his boots no matter what he does to Israel. Nothing will peel them away from Barry, and he knows it.
The hatred he displayed in his remarks about Israel was truly stunning. In addition, the fact that he (Master of the Universe) has dumped Israel all on his own, without consulting with Congress or even the State Dept., indicates that we are dealing with an anti-Jewish, pro-Muslim megalomanic whom nobody dares to oppose.
Liberal Jews cannot ever vote Republican. Their heads would explode. Their Liberalism is ingrained too deep on their very soul.
However, I agree that they most likely will not vote for Imam Obama again.
He has disappointed the Left in a hundred different ways. Israel is just another in a long string of disappointments.
I agree with you on that. #1 the dead or alive order on his head was never lifted and #2 Panetta most likely informed him that if he did not ok going into Pakistan that he couldn;t guarantee that that info would not leak out. He was boxed in and had to ok the entry into Pakistan that is the only thing he had anything to do with.
Stand up and silently flip him off?
Note to author: This statement could apply to anything the community organizer has said since he turned 21.
That would be impressive if 10,000 did that.
Liberalism is their religion. Liberalism trumps being Jewish EVERY time.
Springtime for islam and tyranny
Winter for US and friends...
How ‘bout yelling “You Lie!?!?!” Is that permitted? Nuts.
That they hate Israel and love commie jihadist nutballs who destroy every society they infest?
That's amazing product placement, Jewish Week! Of course, you can Zero to say anything if it's on the TOTUS.
I’m afraid the reality is that Obama will get the vast majority of the Jewish vote in 2012 even if he publicly pisses on Netanyahu. The only real question is if he’ll top 75% again.
Well, I understand that he is backing and filling furiously today, so some will undoubtedly decide it was just “rettrick”. I bet there aren’t too many conservative and orthodox jews, or even observant who will vote for him. You have to remember, to many, many Jewish people after the war, Israel was a bad idea. A needless provocation that would endanger every Jew everywhere. I think that Israel’s goodwill has increased over the years because she is a GOOD COUNTRY in a sea of slummishness at best, and flat out evil at worst.
I would also point out that while the voting statistics look bad, Israel also gets a vast sum of money from the People of the United States. Not necessarily government to government, but people to people in trade, family, and charity.
Bottom line, I don’t understand it either.
They stand on tradition more than good sense a lot of times... it is traditional to vote demorat and lib. Why? I’ll never know or understand.
Does anyone know if the Jewish people have a way of showing disapproval? If they do they should ramp it up for this speech!
I'm right with you on that.
Jewish Americans? Not any different than non-Jewish Americans. They either boo or remain silent. But alas, the AIPAC crowd gave Hussein Obama a very warm welcome, and has interrupted his speech with applause at least a couple dozen times already. Certainly not everyone in attendance, but the majority. Almost lost my breakfast.
An early 'sister Souljah' moment for liberal anti-semites?
He will get a warm, maybe even cheering, welcome.
Just wondering if there are any freepers attending the 2012
AIPAC policy Conference in Washington DC in March. If there are we should have a Freeper get together.
