Osama bin Laden's personal files revealed a brazen idea to hijack oil tankers and blow them up at sea last summer, creating explosions he hoped would rattle the world's economy and send oil prices skyrocketing, the U.S. said Friday.
The newly disclosed plot showed that while bin Laden was always scheming for the next big strike that would kill thousands of Americans, he also believed a relatively simpler attack on the oil industry could create a worldwide panic that would hurt Westerners every time they gassed up their cars.
U.S. officials said the tanker idea, included in documents found in the compound where bin Laden was killed nearly three weeks ago, was little more than an al-Qaida fantasy. But the FBI and the Homeland Security Department issued a confidential warning to police and the energy industry Thursday. The alert, obtained by The Associated Press, said that al-Qaida had sought information on the size and construction of oil tankers, had decided that spring and summer provided the best weather to approach the ships, had determined that blowing them up would be easiest from the inside and believed an explosion would create an "extreme economic crisis."
Bin Laden's documents also revealed that in February 2010, the terror group identified New York, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and Chicago as important cities that should be attacked; and it eyed specific dates, including the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, Christmas, July Fourth and the State of the Union address, according to a similar alert issued Friday, obtained by the AP. There is no information indicating that there are plots involving these cities, dates and tactics under way.

You’d think, Al Qaeda, desperate, very desperate for anything that proves they are still viable would take credit. They want, need bragging rights to a successful operation to survive.

They have,but in my opinion, the only thing that has stopped them is that AMERICANS ARE ARMED. The carnage on their worthless asses would be far too costly for them right now. Crazy as it is, it seems the American psyche can handle the senseless murder, heinous as it is, of thouands of innocent adults without losing their grip, but an attack like that on children would snap us like a rubber band wound too tight.
This country doesn’t have enough body bags or cement scrapers to gather their remains up if they did something like that. There would not be a mosque left standing in this whole country and they damn well know it.

Very scary. It doesn’t take much to find 4-5 Shahab psychos to hijack a ship and then blow it up.
Even if they fail and SWAT kills them 5 minutes after taking hostages, jihadists have won, big time! Fear and uncertainty is what they want.
They want that, but above all they want a body count.
Dead infidels are an added bonus no doubt, but let’s be honest: how hard is to kill a bunch of civilians in a mall, ice cream stand or movie theater? Within 30 seconds you’re talking quit a few.
But the scariest is the pirate suicide bomber one, especially since ships will think it’s the normal hijacking (like people did on 9/11) and let them take over. I hope they are talking precautions, this story sounds like a horrible “hey, how about...” to the Somali Al Qaeda. Imagine oil prices and the ecologic disaster

A high body count on a sudden attack though will cost a ton, like going after bin laden and co was what, $3T?
Exactly. Obama war on oil companies is working hard at doing Osama’s job for him.
