Republican Professors Are Racist, Study More or Less Says
Gawker ^ | May 20, 2011 | Hamilton Nolan

Posted on 05/21/2011 1:52:40 PM PDT by lbryce

A new study—which will doubtlessly be oversimplified and distorted by liberal blogs like us in order to demonize those whose political beliefs we find repulsive—has found that Democratic professors grade like this ("I am a laid-back hippie"), while Republican professors grade like this ("All the black students fail!").

What the study of professors at "an unnamed elite American university" actually found was that Republican professors tend to give more grades at the high and low extremes of the grading scale, while Democratic professors' grades tended to cluster in the middle, in a more copacetic manner. Oh, and this:
With regard to race of students, the study found that black students received lower grades, on average, than did white students whether classes were taught by Democrats or Republicans. In courses with Democratic professors, the gap was 0.27 on a grade point average. In Republican-led classrooms, the gap was 0.42.
The study's authors didn't say why Republicans gave harsher grades to black students, but the answer is "to give us something to argue about."

Republican Professors Are Racist, Study More or Less Says
It's actually less of more, more of less.

The relentless flow of articles Democrats keep trotting out ad nauseum ad infinitum to impugn Republicans, incessantly demean the right wing-way of life, mentality, to portray themselves as paragons of virtue, the very flower of humanity, is a vicious canard, a demagogic cudgel in which Democrats utilize to vilify, demonize Republicans, anoint sainthood upon themselves, the result of feelings of acute inferiority, mania, the stench as political anachronism hanging heavily over their collective mad-cow-disease- ravaged brains.

To paraphrase Lenin; Do enough fallacious, mendacious studies, articles and they become true.

How else to explain the effluent rhetoric espoused by the left?

I'd advise the Democrats to stop braying about how they are the master race, relegate the Democratic party to the dustbin of history, join the Republicans in making the US, the world a better place to live.

Democratic professors appear to be "more egalitarian" than their Republican counterparts when it comes to grading, meaning that more of the Democratic grades are in the middle. Republicans are more likely than Democrats to award very high grades and very low grades.

Another key difference is that black students tend to fare better with Democrats than with Republicans.

Republican professors and Democratic professors presumably produce different outcomes when they enter the ballot box, but what about when they record grades?

A forthcoming study finds that there may be notable differences.

While the study documents those differences, the work will not satisfy political partisans hoping to demonstrate that Republicans are trying to encourage Darwinian competition with grading or that Democrats are Lake Wobegon graders afraid to suggest anyone did poorly. That's because the study makes clear that the researchers lacked the information to determine whether the Democratic or Republican grades were better reflections of student performance. The only thing the researchers could vouch for was the politically linked pattern in grading.

The study -- forthcoming in Applied Economics -- is by Talia Bar, an assistant professor at Cornell University, and Asaf Zussman, assistant professor of economics at Hebrew University of Jerusalem. They examined thousands of grades in a dataset covering the grades awarded at an unnamed elite American university between 2000 and 2004. Party registrations were used to identify professors' political inclinations, and the faculty at this university leaned Democratic, especially among humanities professors. Using SAT scores as a proxy for the preparedness of students, the researchers were able to rule out patterns in which Republican or Democratic professors had better students.

On grade distribution, Republicans were more likely to give very high and very low grades. Among grades given by Republicans, 6.2 percent were C- or lower, compared to only 4.0 percent of the Democratic grades. But Republicans were also more likely to give out A+ grades (8 percent of their grades, compared to only 3.5 percent from Democrats).

With regard to race of students, the study found that black students received lower grades, on average, than did white students whether classes were taught by Democrats or Republicans. In courses with Democratic professors, the gap was 0.27 on a grade point average. In Republican-led classrooms, the gap was 0.42.

While the authors don't endorse the grading style of either Democrats or Republicans, they conclude their paper by arguing that people (such as those concerned about grade distribution) seeking to influence grading policies should pay more attention to the political factor. "Our results suggest that the allocation of grades is associated with the world view or ideology of professors," the authors write.

Republican professors are racists; Republican professors expect the same performance from minorities as it does any one else, and judges them the same.

Blacks typically call anyone racist who doesn't give them everything they want.

I seriously doubt most of those professors even grade their own papers. Plus, who believes that they could find enough Rep professors to get a statistically significant sample?

Notice the grades the liberals tend to hand out are in the middle. No explanation or courage required. However, in order to hand out As or Fs as the republicans are more likely to do requires explanations and, in the case of Fs, courage.

Yet another “study”. ROTFL!!! One of the major problems with this country is that we have way too many “studies”. Every one of them comes with its own political agenda and predetermined results.

So, reading between the lines here, no consideration was given for the field of study or the area of expertise of the professor.

if a gop give 8 black fail and 2 black a+
and dem give 5 black fail and 5 black a+
The study fail because of its methodology. The fact that the gop gave 2 black a+ proves that they’re are NOT racist. You can’t accuse someone as racist because of trend. He is or he isn’t. If he gives 100% black fail, then never given a black an a+, then you can be certain the person is racist

"So, reading between the lines here, no consideration was given for the field of study or the area of expertise of the professor."

By Jove, I think he's got it!

Where are the professors more likely to be the few remaining '60s hippies?
Liberal arts course, of course.

And in which field are the professors more likely to be Republicans?
Engineering.

Now, in which of these two fields are the correct answers on a quiz more purely objective, thus leading to a greater disparity in grades?
That's right: the Republican professors' engineering studies!

So: GOP-leaning professors are bound to give more grades on the extremes. QED

So, black students recieved grades that were lower on average than grades received by white students ... across the board, regardless of the political affiliations of their professors.

That's what the study actually says. Now that we've got that basic fact out of the way, we can then move on to the propaganda nit being picked, here.

That nit-picking involves a wider distribution of grades, with those from Republican professors being both higher and lower than those from Democrat professors.

Now, what can one surmise from this? Would it be that Republican professors are actually giving the grades earned, while Democrat professors are practicing what they preach and redistributing grades, thereby subsidizing the lower end of the curve at the expense of the higher end of the curve?

Yes, that's precisely what's happening. But, no headlines shouting "Democrat Professors Are Penalizing the Best Students And Rewarding the Worst Students!"

Oh no, that would be inflammatory in a manner that is not progressive. So, we get the orthodox progressive inflammatory headline instead. "Republican Professors Are Racist."

The fallacy behind this study is the phrase “give grades.”

Of course, only LIEberal professors “give grades.”

Real professors do not “give grades;” their students earn their grade.

Of course, by using the phrase “give grades,” the authors of the study project LIEberal practices to all professors.

This whole charade is another LIEberal attempt to smear Conservatives.

A dumbass waste of time and taxpayer money, IMHO!

What “elite” American university has enough Republican professors to provide a valid statistical sample?

This sounds more like a fabricated study to grind a political ax than something that can be supported by statistics.

On second thought, I believe it was Mark Twain who said “There are liars, there are damned liars, and there are statisticians.”

From what I've seen, white liberals are far more likely to throw around accusations of racism than most blacks - it's become a nearly meaningless insult hurled at anyone who doesn't agree with liberal policies.

Unless they controlled by Discipline, the results are probably meaningless.

In my experience, what few Republican Professors there are tend to reside in the professional schools (e.g., the School of Business or Medicine).

It would not be surprising that there would be lower grades in those types of courses than there would be in some of the Liberal Arts courses for example where a "C" is about as low as the grades go.

Actually - the truth is something more like this:

Liberal professors (the VAST majority of those in colleges and universities across this nation) grade like this: if I agree with your politics or I see you as a “victim” of society and “the system”, then you get a passing grade - maybe even better.

Conservative professors (very rare): I will give you the grade you deserve without consideration to race or background. Getting ahead is the result of hard work, not racial preferences or excuses.

Republican professors tend to give more grades at the high and low extremes of the grading scale, while Democratic professors' grades tended to cluster in the middle, in a more copacetic manner.

Sounds as if they grade they way they govern. Republican results more or less follow a classic bell curve with a normal distribution of performance.
They likely grade honestly without letting a political agenda affect their judgement and the outcome

On the other hand, democrats appear to grade in a way that ensures equality of results.
They are still building false self esteem for low peformers while holding back high performers.

Those of us (Republican professors) in colleges of arts and sciences tend to be concentrated in the sciences. There are actually quite a lot of us, mostly folks who grew up under Communism and recognize the same rhetoric, methods, and ideas in ‘lite’ form from the Democrats, but some of us are native born Americans.

Bingo. But I bet that “clustering grades in the middle” means more or less giving everyone an A. In contrast, more grades at the extremes means the professor rewards people who meets the standards and punishes those who don’t—in short, they “discriminate” against students who are lazy or stupid. So, its feel good non-judgementalism vs. achievement-based “discrimination”.

Gawker Turns to Race-Baiting for Ad Revenue

Posted by NKYvoice
Recently Hamilton Nolan, a staff writer and editor at Gawker the online News/Gossip Magazine, wrote an article entitled, Republican Professors are Racist, Study More or Less Says. Gawker has recently suffered from “massive” advertising revenue losses and it seems the staff has decided to fight this by taking a page from William Randolph Hearst & Joseph Pulitzer by diving into the murky and toxic waters of ‘Yellow Journalism’ in order to drive up traffic...
