Uh Oh: Tommy Thompson Loses Wisconsin Republican Straw Poll
Weekly Standard ^ | 05/22/2011 | Mark Hemingway

Posted on 05/22/2011 8:54:51 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

Just a few years ago, Tommy Thompson was a well-regarded former governor of Wisconsin. Now it looks like recent attacks on Thompson for his alleged support of Obamacare, by the Club for Growth and others, are starting to take a toll.

Thompson, who's contemplating running for Senate in Wisconsin to replace the retiring Herb Kohl, only got 20 percent of the vote and lost the straw poll for Senate nominees at the state's annual GOP convention today. Here are the totals:

Ted Kanavas - 73

Tommy Thompson - 61

J.B. Van Hollen - 40

Mark Neumann - 33

Tim Michels - 24

Rebecca Kleefisch - 15

Scott Fitzgerald - 14

Mark Green - 13

Jeff Fitzgerald - 10

Tim Sullivan - 3

Write-ins - 15

- Frank Lasee - 4

- Robin Vos, Michelle Litjens, Dave Westlake - 2 each

- Glenn Grothman, Dan Vrakas, Bob Lorge, John Schiess, Nancy Milholland - 1 each

By contrast, when Scott Walker was contemplating running for governor in 2009 he won 93.4 percent of the vote in the straw poll at the state convention.

WHO IS TED KANAVAS?

From Wikipedia...

______________________________________________________________________________

Theodore “Ted” Kanavas (born April 29, 1961) is an American politician and former member of the Wisconsin State Senate, representing the state’s thirty-third district. He is a member of the Republican Party of Wisconsin.[1]

Kanavas was raised in Brookfield, Wisconsin and graduated from Brookfield East High School. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1983. While attending the school, Kanavas worked as an aide to Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner. Kanavas subsequently attended Pepperdine University’s school of law.

For the past seventeen years Kanavas has worked in the software industry.

Kanavas was elected to the school board for Elmbrook School District in 1999, and served until 2002. In July 2001, he was elected to the State Senate in a special election, defeating Democrat Dawn Marie Sass, and he was re-elected in 2002. He also won re-election in 2006 defeating Democratic candidate Andrew Stiffler by nearly 25,000 votes.

Kanavas is known for his efforts to promote job creation and economic development. His legislative successes include passage of the Broadband Deployment Act, the Angel Investment tax credits (known as Act 255) and passage of his Film Wisconsin tax credit bill allowing movie and television production companies to claim a tax credit for work done in Wisconsin. In January 2008, the Michael Mann film Public Enemies starring Johnny Depp became the first production to take advantage of Wisconsin’s film tax credits.

Kanavas attends the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church and coaches his son’s youth baseball team. He and his wife, Mary, have three children; Kelly, Nick and Kate.

On January 25, 2010, Senator Kanavas announced he will not seek reelection.[2] After briefly considering a challenge against United States Senator Russ Feingold, Kanavas decided against entering the race.[3]

Following the announcement that long-time Senator Herb Kohl would not seek reelection in the US Senate in 2012, Kanavas was immediately mentioned by the media as a possible Republican contender for the Senate seat.[4] On May 13, 2011, Kanavas announced he was considering running for the seat.[5]

The Weakly Standard must be in a controlled panic over a milquetoast RINO squish not being top dog.

Damn peasants! Don’t they know their place?

Wisconsin has shown that a relative unknown genuine candidate can not only win buy win decisively against a well known incumbent liberal Senator. There is no need to go with an old news GOP surrender monkey.

My litmus test for a Republican, or even a political candidate is, does Michael Medved support them? If he does, I will look very closely at them, before they get my support. He is a perfect indicator of what the elites in the party want us to do. He LOVES Thompson, and has for years.

Not really, but if he’s a Conservative and can stop the elderly Thompson, he’s all good.

That's easier said than done, given the constituency. No one has ever heard of him and there's no telling how the state's voters will go.

Who would’ve thought some unknown businessman named Ron Johnson could take out one of the left’s most prominent Senator ? At least this guy has electoral experience (I see he also beat Dawn Marie Sass, who was an upset Dem winner for statewide office in ‘06, and he succeeded Margaret Farrow in the Senate, who became Scott McCallum’s Lieutenant Governor). At 50, he’s also a much better age to make that run. Even if Thompson runs, he can be attacked on his age and that he won’t be able to accrue seniority with respect to two or three terms (I sincerly doubt he’ll be running for the latter at the age of 83/84), which would make him an instant lame duck (were he to win). He should’ve run in the ‘90s. Now is just ridiculous (similar situation with Mike Castle).

Good point. His viability will depend on his ability to achieve name recogniton. Also, the billion dollar question is who will the opposition nominate. If they choose Tammy Baldwin, I think he’ll win.

Here’s his bio from Wikipedia (for what that’s worth). He also has a Facebook page. He was a State Senator from 2001-2011, so he should have a decent base of support. His district was the 33rd, which a map shows includes most (if not all-hard to tell from the map) of Washington and Waukesha Counties-GOP dominated, right?
It’s probably to his advantage that he wasn’t a sitting State Senator during the standoff with the unions.
