El Al plane carrying 279 passengers on board takes off en route to New York but forced to return to attempt emergency landing after technical fault found in left wheel; over 70 MDA rescue teams at scene.

A state of emergency was announced at Ben Gurion Airport overnight Sunday because of a technical fault on board an El Al flight expected to land at the airport.

The El Al flight 027, carrying 279 passengers on board, took off en route to New York but was forced to turn back and perform an emergency landing when it was discovered that there was a technical fault in one of the plane's left wheels.

Over 70 MDA rescue teams were stationed at the airport as well as teams of firefighters.

While the Boeing 777 plane was waiting to make the emergency landing, the pilots were instructed to release the plane's fuel in the Mediterranean Sea.

I thought it had already landed...but I guess not. Prayers for them all and for the rescuers (who I hope don’t have to go into action).

It would be very smart to review El Al policies and procedures for use here in the U.S. Too bad they’re not a domestic carrier here.

They should do the fuel dump over gaza and drop a few flares afterward.

Last week when I had to take the Alaska Airlines Red Eye out of Anchorage to Seattle the aircraft failed to maintain cabin pressure, I felt my ears popping pretty fast, the air got really hot and I actually felt shortness of breath, they made a quick descent as we were not to far out and landed, after a 90 minute delay and a move to another 737-800 I finished the journey to Seattle but missed my next flight to Sacramento by 11 minutes.

But I will give credit to Alaska Airlines as they gave me a discount and immediate coach booking as my trip was about a family emergency. They are the absolute best.

High alert sounds weird for something where there’s plenty of experience dealing with different types of aircraft failures while under way.

Either somebody important on board, somebody got Sudden Jihad Syndrome, or sabotage.

Looks like it says American Friends of Mogen David.

I guess some friends of Israel paid for the ambulances.

It was heartbreaking to see the number of ambulances lined up. Thankfully, not needed.

Prayers as always for our friends in Israel.

Yers. That is what it says.

I have done some fund-raising gigs for the “American Friends”.

I believe an ambulance like that costs a quarter million dollars. I may be wrong on the exact figure.
