David Cameron: marriage is key to stable society
The Telegraph ^ | 24 May, 2011 | Rosa Prince

David Cameron will today reaffirm his commitment to the institution of marriage and the importance to children of stable relationships.

He will accuse the last, Labour government on focusing too much on ploughing money into children’s services, without appreciating that it is stable families who provide the prerequisite for a happy life in adult years.

By supporting relationships – preferably within the context of a marriage – the Government will in future put families at the heart of policy making. The Prime Minister’s recommitment to the importance of marriage comes as he uses a major speech to attempt once again to define his crusade of the Big Society. He will say that it is only by fostering strong families that a Big Society can flourish, with individuals coming together to help the community.

But his words, reminiscent of Sir John Major’s “back to basics” drive, may raise questions about his view of the conduct of Chris Huhne, the Energy Secretary. The under fire Cabinet minister is engaged in a bitter divorce from his estranged wife Vicky Pryce, who has five children including three with Mr Huhne, after he left her for his bisexual lover.

Mr Cameron will say: “Now I have always made it clear what I think about the family. I think families are immensely important.

“I am pro-commitment, I back marriage and I think it’s a wonderfully precious institution.

“Strong families are where children learn to become responsible people. When you grow up in a strong family, you learn how to behave, you learn about give and take. “You learn about responsibility and how to live in harmony with others. Strong families are the foundation of a bigger, stronger society. This isn’t some romanticised fiction. It’s a fact.

Marriage and family are the basic foundation of civilization.

Often marriage and family lead to success and fulfillment in many other areas.

A truly loving family is committed and strong.

It is important for these traditional values to be taught to children.

Right on! But why not fire a shot at polygamy, the source of cannon fodder, dysfunctional families and humongous welfare cheating.

This isn’t as great as it seems. He’s absolutely right about the importance of stable marriages and strong families. However, notice he doesn’t say heterosexual marriage. He just says marriage. This is because his government (the Conservatives, no less!) have agreed with their coalition partners to institute full gay marriage in the UK (which currently has just civil unions). This statement sounds like his first step toward that. He first reaffirms the importance of generic “marriage”, then second he’ll say how important it is for all kinds of “families” to have access to marriage. I don’t trust a guy’s words about any marriage when we know he’s promised to implement gay marriage.

I guess he can only make so many points in one speech – but I agree with your point.

Incidentally, Cameron has attacked multiculturalism, and therefore polygamy. Europeans are toughening up.
