RONAN - No charges will be filed against a Ronan-area landowner who shot and killed a female grizzly bear that had killed chickens on May 14.
It was one of two grizzlies killed in Montana that weekend.
Pablo Espinoza, chief of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes Fish and Game Department, said Monday that authorities determined the death of the grizzly was a justifiable self-defense shooting.
The bear had been on the man's property earlier in the day and was shot when it returned.
Tribal officials are encouraging landowners who have, or could have, similar problems with bears to attend a free electric fencing clinic next month.

If we are to maintain our position at the top of the food chain, we have to defend it.

I am assuming that the individual who killed the bear is a tribal member. Otherwise why would the indian fish and game cops have any say in the matter as the federal courts have determined many years ago that they have no jurisdiction over non tribal members.

A bear being a bear.

I ate bear once. That's not a food chain you want to be a part of, top or bottom.

Its a bear finding an easy source of food which also happens to condition the animal to be around people.
Not good if it were my house.

(I could eat it raw, but why do that when I have a fire.)

Free clinic, but not free fencing. Fence is a lot more expensive than a rifle round.

Fence is a lot more expensive than a rifle round.
But it works while you're not there, and it may put a little conditioned reflex into the bears to stay away from the humans. OTOH, the rifle round does that second thing too.

What is bizarre is that shooting a bear even makes the news? We have both grizz and blacks right around our house. Neighbor saw a young grizz last week not 200 yards from our place and we had the burn barrel turned over 3 days back, but tracks were young blk bear. Our dogs run them off before I ever get a shot here at the house.
Everybody shoots every bear they see here in rural Alaska.

Shoot, shovel and shut up is a lot cheaper.
