Strauss-Kahn's pals bid to pay off woman's kin [in rural Africa]
NY Post ^ | 5/24/11

Friends of alleged hotel sex fiend Dominique Strauss-Kahn secretly contacted the accusing maid's impoverished family, offering them money to make the case go away since they can't reach her in protective custody, The Post has learned.

The woman, who says she was sexually assaulted by the disgraced former head of the International Monetary Fund, has an extended family in the former French colony of Guinea in West Africa, well out of reach of the Manhattan DA's Office.

I have a suspicion DSK's New York judge will not be happy when she sees this.

This is perfectly acceptable behavior for many of European’s wealthy elite, they’ve been doing it for centuries to keep their dirty little secrets from becoming public.

I believe most people in France will have nop problem with an offer like this to be made.

Rather an odd approach to take, re: sex which was supposedly (according to the Strauss-Kahn apologists hereabouts) "consensual"... eh, wot? ;)

It couldn't work. She's already made a sworn statement, and probably video testimony, to the police and the DA. If she tried to recant now, she'd be tried for obstruction and perjury..I suspect that this story was "planted" to ratchet up the pressure on DSK.

I repeat my prediction..there will not be a trial. He won't want one. It would be too embarassing for him, he would have to take the stand, and then all his prior bad acts would come in. He will take a plea, probably get 2-3 years..eligible for parole in 18 months or so..also, because of the international implications...like a high level French pol getting killed nside a NYS prison, he'll be transferrd to federal custody, probably do his time in a mid-level Fed facility..not a club Feb..but not a max prison either..

I dunno. DSK and his ilk play by different rules. How many accused rapists get $50,000/month jail cells?

Take the money and press charges anyway.

If she gets paid off and stops cooperating, they’ll cut a deal that sends him home. The rest of the world is astonished that a mere housekeeper can get a big name IMF chief arrested for a little thing like “unconsensual sex”. I mean, it’s kinda what those people are for...in their eyes.

That whole sexual harassment thing went out when Clinton got elected. Women really ARE the spoils of power.

Your analysis and forecast strike me as about right.

Though the notion of DSK spending his last minutes face down in a pool of vomit in Attica does have a certain je ne sais quoi...

“It would be too embarassing for him, he would have to take the stand, “

Apparently, you are not too familiar with the US law and right to remain silent. He does not have to take the stand. Most accused do not.

I have a different prediction:

Obama issues a full pardon. Obama invites him to White House for a Presidential Achievement Medal. DSK goes back to France, where he converts to Islam and is made the head of the UN Womans Rights Commission.

I am quite familar with US law. However, you miss several key points. If the defense is that it was “consensual” then there is NO way that he can avoid taking the stand, to explain himself. If he doesn’t take the stand..he’s toaast...which is why there will be a plea.

My prediction is that this doesn't go to trial. The victim will eventually be bribed and drop charges. Behind the scenes political pressure will convince the government to reduce or drop its charges once the victim has been mollified.

His defense attorneys can argue it was consensual and he has no need to take the stand. This is standard practise and no attorney would suggest his client to take the stand.

Should he be convicted, the next ploy will be a “heart attack” and the plea to send him back to France for “humanitarian reasons.” If it worked for the Lockerbie bomber, it can certainly work for a mere rapist.

Yeah, sounds good, but what about political pressure and international factors? Lotta money could change hands here, and not just with the victim and her family. I'm thinking Bloomberg (who, I assume, is a member of the same "club" DSK belongs to, figuratively and probably literally).

With the current bunch in DC, and with the billionatti controlling the levers of power as they do....

She doesn't have to recant, after all. She can just stop cooperating, suffer memory lapses. All she has to do is act a unsure of herself when she's on the witness stand. Mix up a few facts, describe, say, the lighting conditions in the room one way on her first day of testimony, and another way on a subsequent day of testimony. Wouldn't one or two slip-ups like that be enough to spring DSK, with the top-notch legal and trial defense team he has working for him?
