TSA check (vanity)

Posted on 05/24/2011 5:44:24 PM PDT by depressed in 06

As a less than frequent flyer, last time 5 years ago, I went through TSA security screening without my belt and shoes, passed thru the magnetometer and full body scan, the screener said that he needed to pat my butt, more like a athlete attaboy. But, then he wanted to swab my palms. Clean. Nothing he did seem unprofessional. Anyone have a similar experience?

I had made some hand loads two days before.

full body scan?

They do that for everyone now? screener get his jollies when the kids go through?

It all sounds unnecessary unless someone has something about them that make them suspicious

I've solved the problem entirely--I never intend to board another plane. If I can't drive there, I won't go there.

Lucky for me that all my kids live within a comfortable driving distance, and I've been everywhere I wanted to go........

Your story is a little confusing.

Did you go through the big Magnetic Imagining thingy?

And did they use the back of the hand slight touch?

I'll bet that's the last time you fly out of San Francisco International.

My young sister travels a lot for business and told us that she had to go through the scanners every time (or be molested).

It no longer sounded like random selection, nor was it only at the big airports like LAX. El Paso, San Antonio, a bunch of other smaller towns, all have the radiation machines now.

Causing cancer and who knows what else. Go back to sleep, peasants.

I was worried about that but did some research. The X-rays used are less than the background radiation experienced on the flight itself. It is about 1/1000 of a dental X-ray.

I am not happy with the TSA and we should be doing profiling, but throwing a tantrum doesn’t accomplish anything.

I've passed the "nitrates swab test" with my hunting bag that the day before held shotgun shells, both fired and unfired. And yes, they swabbed my bag - the handles and the zipper area.

FWIW, I've never seen anything fail the swab test.

I guess you’re worried about gunpowder residue? I don’t even have a gun, but if I were you, I think I too would be worried about it simply because they are so unpredictable at the TSA. You lucked out and it sounds like they were pretty normal at your airport.

My sister had somebody try to take a tuning fork away from her (she’s a singer and was on her way to a Sacred Harp singing) because he thought it might be a weapon. So you never know.

Agreed about that: TSA employees are those that are too stupid to flip burgers. They follow rote because they can’t discern nor think. I would be happier with robots since I would know robots don’t get OT nor ask for PTO.

I am familiar enough with the local airport to know which line has the more seasoned (bored) “agents” that will just pass everything through.

Ironically, I have GlobalEntry “Trusted passenger” status for international travel but they have yet to implement it for intra-USA (which they promised us like a week after 9/11).

About five years ago they pulled my 12 y.o. son aside prior to boarding and swabbed his hands, clothes, etc.

Something flagged as "residue" or something. He was wearing his red wool shirt with all these NRA marksmanship badges he'd obtained shooting small bore over the past year or so. Same jacket he wore when shooting at the indoor range five days before the flight.

That was the end of it from the TSA's point of view.

Early in May I was plucked out of the full body naked-scan line and put through the magnetometer only (yay!). The dude in front of me with glazed eyes, wearing an Obama 2008 baseball cap and his forty-something chick wearing a giant silver glitter peace sign on her droopy white halter top were selected for the extra special gloved treatment.

I wore a grin all the way to the gate afterward. What kind of maroon wears an Obama 2008 baseball cap these days?

I go through the scanner if they ask me to: moose ears and all. But if you have anything in your pockets — even a dime — you will get patted after the scanner.

I wear travel gear that includes integrated belts in the slacks (and zip-off pant legs for when it gets hot) and multi-pocket vented shirts (which I fill after security).

FWIW, I've never seen anything fail the swab test.

My son has failed the swab test! Several times.

One year it was a previous use of firecrackers. Another time it was right after going to the range. (Boy howdy, did he fail that one... and his bags failed... and his hair and his shoes... They swabbed everything and everything came up hot. Thank goodness the people searching him had a sense of humor.)

Better to let the gummint tell you you can’t travel at all.

Who is the slave here? Those of us willing to put up with 10 minutes of slight hassle? Or those who throw themselves on the ground in a tantrum and basically circle their world at a few hundred miles around their home?

I can go to Fiji or Australia or Ireland (the land of my ancestors) or Bora Bora or Alaska tomorrow with a small shrug of my shoulders.

You tantrum-throwers OTOH, are imprisoned forever. And the very government you decry has jailed you. At your request.

I travel frequently. I often set off the chem alarm and get swabbed on outbound trips. First, I do a lot of gardening so I pick up fertilizer dust on my shoes and clothes. Second, I keep my passport and cash in my safe with guns and ammo so I pick up gunpowder residue when packing for a trip. I rarely set off an alarm on the return trip except once it happened in Europe.

I know a tantrum when I see/read one. This was denotative, not connotative.

I fly where I want to go and put up with a few minutes of line waiting usually. I haven’t been touched by an agent in 6 months (that’s 200 flights).

If you want to let your misinformation ground you, I leave you to your ignorance (also not rude: “ignorance” is lack of knowledge, not the ability to assimilate it).

Do I want better? Heck yeah. Do I deserve better? heck yeah. But I work within the system we have to make the changes we need.

I don’t cross my arms and pout and say “I am gonna eat worms!” because I don’t like the system.

That doesn’t make any sense. Why do you travel in clothes you use for gardening?

And why store your cash with your ammo, knowing it will probably set off the sniffer?

I plan every aspect of my travel, from my packing to my clothes.

Do you just “wing it?” (no pun intended). If so, you are a freer spirit than I could hope to be. But I am ready for darn near any situation that may come up and I am super comfortable when I fly.

As I said, I ain’t thrilled with the procedures and they owe me Trusted Traveler.

Look buster, I don’t understand how you have enough sense to support Herman Cain and yet you still spew the nonsense you do.

I spent a fair portion of my life upholding the Constitution
against ALL enemies, both foreign and domestic. That included spending a great deal of time getting shot at, sleeping in the mud, crawling through tunnels.

I WILL NOT tolerate a TSA agent getting personal with me.

Period.

“The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.”

Most Americans can’t even do fireworks in their front yards on Independence Day anymore. “It” does not make me feel patriotic at all. Freedom is not free, and it is certainly NOT synonomous with “safety”. Safety has never conquered anything. Those “few seconds” that you speak of, that we all acquiese to, last an eternity. I’d rather be a free American allowed to travel freely within my own country and have a government with the balls to ensure that it is so. My countrymen did not bring down the twin towers - so profile the living crap out of anyone who might have ever had anything whatsoever to do with it, then, and now. Maybe because I understand that flying is not a “right.” When a cop pulls you over do you think yelling “4TH AMENDMENT!” will stop him from searching your car? But I bet you drive anyway.

But if you cage yourself as much as you want. I suggest you take a map, a compass (or a string representing about 300 miles), then draw a circle around your house.

That is your world.

Now, look at a globe.

That is my world.

And, as I said, I haven’t had a TSA agent touch me in a long time and when they did it was light and unobtrusive.

Go into a courtroom and scream “4TH AMENDMENT” and see how far that gets you when you have to pay the traffic ticket you got from you driving... oh, wait, you won’t drive when they may SEARCH YOU WITH NO CAUSE!

But that is your tax dollars at work.... NO WAIT! THE CONSTITUTION DOESN’T ALLOW INCOME TAX!!! So I assume you don’t pay taxes either.

We have a system to deal with these things. It is called “legislation.” It is slow, much slower than administrative edicts. But it, in the long term, is our best and only way to make permanent changes.

In the meantime, enjoy your self-defined prison. I hope you don’t have any relatives further than a few hundred miles from your home. Kids, parents, whatever. You have made them off-limits by your purity.

What doesn’t make sense? I walk in the garage and along my flowerbeds and pick up fertilizer on my shoes. The floor of my cars and truck are probably covered in fertilizer residue. If you are going to garden, it happens. Same way all the currency in the US tests positive for cocaine residue.

I keep guns and magazines in various safes around the house including the safe I hold money in. Doesn’t everyone? What good is a gun if you don’t keep it where you are likely to need it?

I stopped overthinking travel years ago. You don’t travel much so you are overly concerned. It takes about 30 seconds for a swab test and it has never been an issue.

So there were no checkpoints before 9/11? No pat-downs? You could just walk into airports free and clear?

Where the hell did you live? Not the USA! There have been airport checks for 30+ years!

You are just drawing an arbitrary line — which should have been drawn 40 years ago if it is to be drawn at all.

And I assure you those few seconds last — a few seconds.

I can speak, I can move (which you can’t), I can voice my thoughts (which I have, even in the TSA line), I can think — if I wish to I can publish those thoughts — WHILE IN LINE.

Can you post cuss words on FR? Try it and test your “rights” on a private forum.

Why would you need banning? This is AMERICA! You should be FREE to say WHATEVER YOU WANT!

Think about it: you willingly give up your 1st Amendment rights to participate in FR.

Now think more — you choose not to briefly give up other rights since they are more important to you than freedom of movement.

I am free to go anywhere. You are chained.

Good choice.
