TSA check (vanity)

Posted on 05/24/2011 5:44:24 PM PDT by depressed in 06

As a less than frequent flyer, last time 5 years ago, I went through TSA security screening without my belt and shoes, passed thru the magnetometer and full body scan, the screener said that he needed to pat my butt, more like a athlete attaboy. But, then he wanted to swab my palms. Clean. Nothing he did seem unprofessional. Anyone have a similar experience?

I had made some hand loads two days before.

full body scan?

They do that for everyone now? screener get his jollies when the kids go through?

It all sounds unnecessary unless someone has something about them that make them suspicious

I've solved the problem entirely--I never intend to board another plane. If I can't drive there, I won't go there.

Lucky for me that all my kids live within a comfortable driving distance, and I've been everywhere I wanted to go........

Your story is a little confusing.

Did you go through the big Magnetic Imagining thingy?

And did they use the back of the hand slight touch?

the screener said that he needed to pat my butt, more like a athlete attaboy.

I'll bet that's the last time you fly out of San Francisco International.

My young sister travels a lot for business and told us that she had to go through the scanners every time (or be molested).

It no longer sounded like random selection, nor was it only at the big airports like LAX. El Paso, San Antonio, a bunch of other smaller towns, all have the radiation machines now.

I fly 200,000 miles a year. I don’t let the government dictate my freedom of movement nor method of same.

It’s not going to matter soon. The airports were just a start.

I was worried about that but did some research. The X-rays used are less than the background radiation experienced on the flight itself. It is about 1/1000 of a dental X-ray.

I am not happy with the TSA and we should be doing profiling, but throwing a tantrum doesn’t accomplish anything.

I've passed the "nitrates swab test" with my hunting bag that the day before held shotgun shells, both fired and unfired. And yes, they swabbed my bag - the handles and the zipper area.

FWIW, I've never seen anything fail the swab test.

You can joke with her that in TSA circles she might be a “porn star”... (okay, just make sure she can’t hit you)

I guess you’re worried about gunpowder residue? I don’t even have a gun, but if I were you, I think I too would be worried about it simply because they are so unpredictable at the TSA. You lucked out and it sounds like they were pretty normal at your airport.

My sister had somebody try to take a tuning fork away from her (she’s a singer and was on her way to a Sacred Harp singing) because he thought it might be a weapon. So you never know.

It's going to get much worse before it get's any better, I'm afraid.

Soooooo, how do you do it then? I fly quite a bit too and I always "opt out" of the scanner, but it has never been followed with "Okay, just go on then."

Agreed about that: TSA employees are those that are too stupid to flip burgers. They follow rote because they can’t discern nor think. I would be happier with robots since I would know robots don’t get OT nor ask for PTO.

I am familiar enough with the local airport to know which line has the more seasoned (bored) “agents” that will just pass everything through.

Ironically, I have GlobalEntry “Trusted passenger” status for international travel but they have yet to implement it for intra-USA (which they promised us like a week after 9/11).

And being rude doesn’t accomplish anything either.

If you believe your “research” sponsored by who-knows-what, good luck to you.

About five years ago they pulled my 12 y.o. son aside prior to boarding and swabbed his hands, clothes, etc.

Something flagged as "residue" or something. He was wearing his red wool shirt with all these NRA marksmanship badges he'd obtained shooting small bore over the past year or so. Same jacket he wore when shooting at the indoor range five days before the flight.

That was the end of it from the TSA's point of view.

Yup. And some, even here on FR, will willingly bend over and take it. It’s for their safety and perfectly safe....

No wonder it was so easy to pile everyone in the cattle cars for Siberia.
