Skip to comments.Barack Obama's speech failed to live up to his own high standards

The pictures were better than the words. President Barack Obama is a brilliant speaker, but also a very polite man, and in Westminster Hall his oratorical inspiration was smothered by the cautious politeness of an American statesman.
Perhaps Mr Obama was smothered also by his audience, which remained stubbornly unresponsive. For most of the time the President had nothing to bounce off: no applause and certainly no shouts of praise or blame as might be heard in an American church or at an American political rally.
The presidential text sounded as if it had been worked on so hard and conscientiously by a vast team of helpers that it had lost all savour, and been reduced to a series of orotund banalities, of the sort which can be heard at every tedious Anglo-American conference: Profound challenges stretch out before us the time for our leadership is now Our alliance will remain indispensable.
It did not help to hear Mr Obama assert, after only a minute or two, that fortunately its been smooth sailing between Britain and the United States ever since 1812, when we burned down the White House. Everyone present will have been able to think of occasions when this was not so. Suez did not seem like plain sailing.

At least, now the British know firsthand what weve been suffering through these past three years. Empty words and far left failed policies.
Do I really need to look up the videos of Obama giving the middle finger?
It's kind of late and I would like to go to bed soon.
damn teleprompter. Its all his fault.
Sure! Why, he's the standard bearer!
"and he's clean, too!"
I would love to see a video of Obama’s speech before Parliament today. Can anyone here provide one?
“a series of orotund banalities” would describe every speech Obama has ever given.
The fact is that the alleged “high standards” of Barry’s oratory are the result of grading on a curve and that affirmative action yardstick applies to his rhetorical efforts as well as everything else he’s ever done (i.e. not much).
You took the exact words out of my mouth. Obama has high standards? Who knew?
The polite British way of saying his speech sucked more than usual.
You reporters know the routine, you bigots!
"Oh, Gracious God, Thank You So Much! Its such a blessing to be able to hear you . . .! Mr. President, thank you for taking time out of your day! Oh, gracious God, thank you so much!"
LOL sad but funny.
So far just audio.
The dead silence of the audience is what jumped out at me in the audio cuts I heard. Even the crickets were silent. And his lines were so full of banalities that I was actually embarrassed for him.
“President Barack Obama is a brilliant speaker”
Anyone who thinks that needs his ears cleaned out with an electric egg beater.
. President Barack Obama is a brilliant speaker,.....
For sure!!! JUST a sampling .
“The pictures were better than the words. President Barack Obama is a brilliant speaker, but also a very polite man, and in Westminster Hall his oratorical inspiration was smothered by the cautious politeness of an American statesman.

How did he type this with BHO’s schlong in his mouth?
He’s a moron.
Come on. You’re not even tryin’.
Someone must have added a laugh track into that.
He’s ~terrible~ speaker. Robotic and mind-numbing.
You do realize, don't you, that there's a mentally challenged individual who was loudly yelling at him while he was trying to speak? (That's who he turned to and answers...)
The creep makes my skin crawl, but don't underestimate his ability to sway the masses with his empty rhetorical delivery.
Ha...in your dreams Telegraph lefties...
Take away the teleprompter and add in the "middle finger on cheek " thingy...
and what you got left (no pun intended)
is a semi literate Chicago punk.
From the article: “We warm to Mr Obama, and feel an affinity with him, in part because he is a grandson of the British Empire.”
He is, indeed, which is exactly why he is not eligible to serve as POTUS.
Hey Brits, he’s an empty suit and he hates you. After you snubbed him by not inviting him to the Royal Wedding he wants all the perks of a State Visit to make his widdle fweelings all better.
He’s not a smart man, not an oratorical genius and he always simply mouths platitudes.
He only gets excited by thugs and terrorists like Chavez and Imanutjob.
Moronic Brit excuse-making... Øbozo is merely a dumb@$$.
That was one of the best “tongue in cheek” articles I have ever read. He literally kills Obama with seemingly kind but very insulting words...got to love British humor!!
Here was a personal connection rather than a platitude. We warm to Mr Obama, and feel an affinity with him, in part because he is a grandson of the British Empire.
And yet, Obama's Kenyan family is convinced his grandfather was abused by the British -- imprisoned and tortured.
I don't know if that's true, but grandfather Hussein Onyango Obama's conversion to Islam may be a sign that he didn't exactly have warm feelings toward Britain.
Someone has to go over there and play "emperor's new clothes" with these idiot children. Obama is not a brilliant speaker. He is a wooden speaker who's reliance on sound bite sized teleprompter cues are mistakenly called "clipped phrases."
Please, brit people, get real.
Applause did break out when Mr Obama observed that its possible for the sons and daughters of former colonies to sit as Members of Parliament, and for the grandson of a Kenyan who served as a cook in the British Army to stand before you as the President of the United States.
Here was a personal connection rather than a platitude. We warm to Mr Obama, and feel an affinity with him, in part because he is a grandson of the British Empire. As well as being an American, he is one of us.
Mr. Obama is actually a SON of the British Empire. But as that might draw too much attention to his ineligibility, Obama floats out this clever bit of misdirection that he is a “grandson” and the reporter ran with it!
“High standards”????? What have they been smoking over there...
I recall President Reagan being heckled and he handled himself very well. I also remember Slick being heckled and he handled it well. Barry the Kenyan just doesn’t have it and he sure as heck isn’t a ‘brilliant speaker’.
Probably. He sure doesn't mind being a George Soros tool.
Huh. I guess my usual tagline got erased somehow. Thanks, I’ve put it back.
Thank you for that. He obviously did not write that speech.
One cannot be hopelessly tacky, completely undiplomatic, require a teleprompter to put to words together and still be a “brilliant speaker”. He might be a good reader, but not a “brilliant speaker”.
...and I am Queen Elizabeth.
Obama has never given a heart warming speech like Netanyahoo did to congress. You could feel his, Netanyahoo, wanting to be close to USA by the way he casually leaned on the podium and use hands to reach out in a friendship gesture. Obama on the other hand is always in a ‘look down’posture as if he copies Musalinni. Obama has no social skills that liken to ordinary folks. He,Obama, is a product of his upbringing and narcissim. Your catching the fact that Obama referred to his granfather and not to his father makes the case that the man is very devious in covering/hiding the truth with another truth.
Just another illustration of how Obama is unmatched in his ability to be praised to the skies for just showing up. Reminds me of those kids in elementary school who got the “perfect attendance” award but were otherwise quite mediocre and often the troublemakers.
