Hunt for tornado survivors looking bleak (1,500 still missing in Joplin MO)
Edmonton Journal ^ | 05/25/2011 | BY KEVIN MURPHY, REUTERS

The search for Skyular is but one of the many sorrow-filled hunts for loved ones in this southwestern Missouri city of 50,000, where about 1,500 people remain missing. Authorities said the missing could include many who simply have not yet been able to let relatives know where they are.

Authorities in Joplin said they were racing against forecasts for more bad weather as well as grim survival odds for anyone still trapped.

"We're hopeful that we'll still be finding people," said Joplin fire Chief Mitch Randles, who said there were several reports of cries coming from beneath collapsed buildings. "We want to make every opportunity we can to find everybody that is still in the rubble and has survived to this point."

How awful. Prayers for those still trapped that they be found before it is too late.

I keep hearing 125 dead and 900 injured, period, on the news.

Isn't it a rather important detail that 1500 are still missing?

What is the matter with our news media?

Not to minimize the significance of the situation, but “missing” seems like a bit of a strong word. Perhaps ‘unaccounted for” might be more accurate, though less sensational for sure.

I think I recall hearing that the 1500 number includes people who weren’t even in town when the tornado hit, so while the 125 death total will rise, it won’t increase by 1500.

The vast majority of the missing just didn’t check in or whatever. Another 100 dead at most. Still horrifying.

If it’s anything like the Tuscaloosa situation, the “missing” people are more an issue of communication difficulties than anything else. No guarantees though - I don’t know for sure.

Well, at least there are some news outlets who care enough to publish this tragedy.

Where I live, the big news is Hines Ward winning DWTS. Talk about screwed up priorities.

The figure has been 1500 for two days for a reason.

Prayers, Lord.

Do you for 1 moment think the MSM (Propaganda Arm of the DNC) is going to let the people know it is worse than Katrina and Obambi is AWOL!

Exactly, folks just simply out of town would be accounted for by now either thru phone contact or having returned to check on their homes.

Exactly.

Worse than Katrina, in ONE small town, in 30 minutes, no way to warn the sleeping victims.

Where W tried to get Blanco and Nagin to do something, anything, two days in advance, and got the finger.

Cell carriers can very easily zero in on phones that go black and stay black within 500 ft. Nobody trying to use or replace their phone number on a new phone. Because they ‘can’t’.

True. The Militant Media has but one agenda, and that involves its complicity in the destruction of our Liberties. It’s sacred lord shall never be disparaged for the blunders and delinquencies charged against Bush.

ABC's Diane Sawyer assured us that all was well Obama was planning to visit Joplin on Sunday. If it were Bush there would be snarky remarks about his priorities, his hobnobbing with British royalty while tornadoes devastate Americas heartland.

" Worse than Katrina, in ONE small town, in 30 minutes, no way to warn the sleeping victims. "

That's what is scary about a tornado.... unless your watching a local news radar for the weather, you or your family could be asleep and one of them drops out of the sky, especially one that drops out of the sky at night.

This is what you need, then:

http://www.amazon.com/Sima-WX-200-Emergency-Alert-Radio/dp/B001JVPFV8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1306373248&sr=8-1

You can have it sound the alarm if a tornado warning is only valid for 1/9th of your county, and not be woke up for all the other areas in the county, nor the other counties around you. We have this and it is excellent. Get rechargeables and it will slowly keep them charged so it will always work when the power goes out.

Where are the Congressmen, women and Senators of these States and why are they not howling at the President to come to the aid of his OWN COUNTRYMEN?

Because they are aware that none of us are his own countrymen.

It finally got through their heads.

There is another good option for the awake hours and bad weather is happening. Get a police scanner and tune into the local Skywarn system on HAM Radio along with state emergency management and local law enforcement. Skywarn is volunteers who report to NWS tornado's on the ground usually using HAM repeaters. Usually there is a specific frequency in a given area where they report into. Those can be found on line.

Doplar is great but can't see one that is actually down. They may suspect it but human eyes verify. They along with any LEO or other agencies that might spot them can be monitored on a scanner. You can get up two a two minute heads up sometimes before the NOAA warning radio activates.

Can you imagine what it might take to break zero’s heart, other than, wait... there is no other than.

You cannot break zero’s heart because he hasn’t one.

I saw W’s heart broken over and over...over the suffering of Americans.

What MIGHT break zero’s heart? Nothing I can think of.

FYI, Tusclaoosa had about 400 missing for a week. It took a while to sort out who was at what shelter and who was accounted for. Once they finally got the Emergency Management structure going (one of the first places destroyed in TUscaloosa was the office for the local emergency management folks), within a period of about 3 days, that number of 400 dwindled to 1-2.
