State officials are announcing today the state of Missouri is taking over the listing of the names of the dead and unaccounted for.
NBC Action News has learned that 232 names have been formally filed with the state as missing and that the estimate of 1,500 unaccounted for is considered much higher than the reality.

What is the difference between missing and unaccounted for?
Wow. Just awful. Prayers for them and the family members looking for the missing.
My guess is that “missing” indicates that someone has filed a report, unaccounted for could just be someone who left town, or that no one has actually reported missing, but isn’t home or hasn’t reported to work.
So many sad stories in Joplin. I saw the one on TV last night about the young widow whose husband threw himself on top of her to protect her when their house started disintegrating. He was killed by flying debris. My heart breaks for all of the survivors who lost loved ones.
The unaccounted includes deceased and duplicate names, I guess.

There are a ton of folks that heard the warning and hightailed it out of town to friends or relatives. They are with everyone that “knows” them, or needs to know where they are. But the neighbors might still be saying, “I don’t know where Suzy and their kids are....”
They are unaccounted for.
Missing is having seen Suzy get her kids into the house to go down to the cellar when the sirens went off. And you haven’t seen them since.
In this case, it is likely the difference between life and death.
Why is British reporting so superior to US reporting? Is everyone working in US media outlets illiterate?
If family then I'd say after 5 days prospects are not good.
Our media spends their time fawning over Obamas. Real life news doesn’t interest them. Especially if it is in flyover country.
