(Reuters) - Democratic Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton on Thursday vetoed a bill that would have required voters to provide photo identification to cast votes.
Dayton cited a lack of broad bi-partisan support for the bill and its potential as a $23 million unfunded mandate on local governments in part for his veto. The Republican-led Legislature had sent the bill to him on Monday.
Supporters had argued the bill would strengthen the integrity of the election system in Minnesota.
Dayton said he did not believe voter fraud to be a significant problem in Minnesota and that the reason most often cited for requiring photo identification, felons voting, would not be resolved by the bill.
"We have the highest voter turnout year after year and under intense, bipartisan scrutiny, the recent statewide recounts have highlighted how reliable the results are," Dayton said in a letter notifying the Senate of his veto.

Can Legislature override the veto?
They’re no longer in session.
How did I know the first word in this article was going to be “Democrat...”
The only difference between Minnesota and Massachusetts is about 20 degrees in the winter. Other than that, they are identical twins.
But you have to show a photo ID to buy alcohol.
But you have to show photo ID to buy a gun.
But you have to show photo ID to...
You’d think the house could reconvene in a special session to respond to legislation that they passed being vetoed. I’m just wondering if they have the votes to override, too. It would be a magnificent Republican moment if they did.
our governor , Marx Dayton , is way goofier than yours.
Thanks. I guess what I meant was: are there enough votes to override him when they are in session?
To say nothing of the4 Lutefisk brained idiots that voted this creature into office! GOD help Minnesota!! Land of 10,000 lakes, and millions of idiot voters!
Dayton would never call a special session to give them an opportunity for an over ride.
...buy spray paint, rent a stupid goobermint bike, get into Obama’s inaugeral ball...
Probably not on this one....
take out that 4 ;-) I tend to make typos when I am fuming about Liberal idiocy
public polls show 80%+ favor voter ID ...but MN can afford this:
MN Overpays Millions in Child Care
He has never heard of Al Franken?
Why bite the hand that gives you everything, huh dayton ?
Of course the scumbag vetoed the bill. Voter fraud is a democrat special and the way they win many elections.
You need a photo ID to vote in Florida and you know we have never had a problem with elections...snark...lol
Is there a DFL'er that does?
After all, without voter fraud they would never be a majority even in Minnesota.
Disgraceful. the Voter ID wave is sweeping the states. Tens of thousands of illegals VOTED in Colorado last Nov! Raz says 77% of Americans want this. Any Governor who stands against Voter Id is going down.
...buy an “M” rated video game atleast here in Michigan.
So how is the old soapbox and ballot box working out for you America?
I have a supply precious metals in boxes I would like to donate to LaRaza and the NBP.
No gold or silver, all copper jacketed lead.
I guess this means Pawlenty can’t count on winning his state if he’s the nominee. /s
Thanks for the link, and let’s not forget ACORN’s trunk load of ballots, well, unless you only need one ID per trunk load.
How does it cost 23 million dollars to look at an ID before having to find a name in a registry and then give that person a ballot?
Man Who Pleaded Guilty On Drug Charge Gets To Vote (MN-2008)
laws are only for republicans...
This is corrupt government - corrupt to the core. Not allowing the legislative branch to respond in a debate after you get in your jab is undemocratic and unamerican.
Everyone should be asking why Democrats support voter fraud.
Sorry for decent Yankees...ya’ll have some crazy white people up there.
We can swap our libs for u guys to come down here.
You can even bring Union blue memorabilia...belive it or not...we are cool with it.
Just careful with the matches ok?
so he wanted to veto the bill which will let the voters say if they want a perverted marriage or a real normal one.
He did the abortion one and now this.
OK this is all in 3 days as far as I know so what is going on with this radical lunatic
He wants to do all this then fine but the GOP had better raise the homo pervert issue as well as this as these two are the majority.
The problem for the perverts, cross dressers and the radical socialists is that they surround themselves with like minded radicals and then think they are the majority but when the voters come out and the ones who stay silent then they find they are a small minority and then they get all into baby tantrums
Dayton Vetoes Voter ID Bill Despite Broad Public Support
“According to our exclusive new SurveyUSA poll, 76% of Minnesotans say they’d vote in favor of voter ID. Only 18% oppose the idea.”
Makes sense. They recently “elected” Franken.
So lets see the Democrat governor believes that the Majority in a Democracy doesn’t matter because in order for things to get done they must have “broad bi-partisan support” is that WTF?
Kick the dope out of office. But first make the remainder of his term miserable.
ONE fraudulant vote is one too many.
no citizen should be screwed over by state endorsed fraud.
There, I fixed it.
Of course it's not significant to Dayton. It only helps DFL/Dems in that state. It's no problem at all!
To get a job
To cash a check
(And this one is funny for those who claim students don’t have one) To get into a nightclub. And we all know how many fake ones they have!
His new plan is for ATM voting machines. Cutting spending is a must. When you vote for the Democrat money comes out. Saving on administrative cost. If you vote Republican a Robber Jumps out from behind the machine and Mugs you.
LOL... seems like that idea will sell well to the idiot left...
I’m not a Pawlenty supporter, but it’s amazing he did as well as he did in this state.
[ONE fraudulant vote is one too many.]
Exactly. Every fraudulent vote, disenfranchises a legitimate vote!
[no citizen should be screwed over by state endorsed fraud.]
We have a problem when one party supports and defends vote fraud. If there is fraud in the vote, freedom does not exist.
They would if they could.
What I just sent him:
Governor Dayton - How can you justify your veto of this important legislation? Certainly you are aware that in this day and age, there is NOTHING anyone can do without an ID. You can’t get a job, you can’t cash a check - these are the most basic things that relate to those you might like to consider disadvantaged. You can’t get on a plane, you can’t get into a nightclub (except for those “students” some are so worried about, because they ingeniously get lots of fake IDs.) Bottom line we live in a society where you can’t function without a photo ID, so just who is it you think doesn’t have one? Insane.
