Declaring, "OK, Amen," Republican Gov. Rick Perry signed the voter identification bill Friday that Republicans have pushed for the past several sessions.

"This is what democracy is all about," Perry said. "It's our duty to ensure that elections are fair, beyond reproach."

Some Dallas area lawmakers, including freshmen Reps. Cindy Burkett, R-Mesquite, and Kenneth Sheets, R-Dallas, stood beside Perry as he signed the measure that requires voters to show a photo ID before casting a ballot.

I think its great and we also did it here in GA but my continuing question is whatever happened to showing your voter registration card to vote?

I haven’t shown an Registration card in years and don’t ever carry it. I show them my Drivers License and if the data there on matches the data in the voter roles then I’m good to go.

The deal breaker...
"This is what democracy is all about," Perry said.
He doesn't know we live in a Constitutional Republic.

Oh, it's all fine and dandy that he signed the bill (again for little more than political expediency), but he doesn't appear able to grasp the most elemental concepts of America's form of government

Yeh I know. I just don’t understand why they stopped asking you for your voter’s registration card. Anybody with a fake driver’s license can vote now I guess.

If your name is on the voter roles and that info matches the drivers license info then you can vote here in Texas.

I think that “democracy” is a word that has a huge variety of uses any more, and that we all use it as shorthand for constitutional republic all the time. I’m not going to oppose someone based on word choices.

Think as you will, but I know the difference, the separate definitions and I clearly don't use the word when describing our form of government.
You shouldn't speak for others.

I’m not going to oppose someone based on word choices.
I will and do. It goes far deeper than just "word choice". It's indicative of a person's political mindset.

“someplace in the Hill Country vs. Arizona (Scottsdale)”

Have you looked at other places in Arizona? Scottsdale is kind of hot compared to places like Payson or Sierra Vista - by 10-15 degrees.

And just so you know that he does indeed know the difference...
Gov. Rick Perry's 'Future of the State' Address November 17, 2004
Snip...It is a testament to the enduring virtue of our democratic experiment that more than 225 years since the birth of our republic we still decide our destiny as a nation without tanks in the street, or without fear or intimidation, but instead in the sanctity of a voting booth where the opinion of a poor tenant farmer carries as much weight as that of a well-heeled stock broker.

Yet at the same time he's too ignorant to know that this nation is an experiment in self governance.
Or are you of the belief that "democratic experiment" and "experiment in self governance" are the same in word and intent as well?

I think that the word “democratic” gets used regularly with the definition of: “voting on things.”

Which we do. Lots of things. It’s a “democratic” process. Even for electors and representatives, folks vote, the votes are tallied, and the one with the most votes goes forward and the one without goes back to the dustbin.

I suspect that Rick Perry is the 3rd coming of GWBush. Bush had his weaknesses, but I vastly prefer him to Obama.

My favorite candidate at this point is Palin, second might be Cain once I learn more about him, and third, when compared to all the others is someone like Perry, who is conservative on my touchstone issue, life, and who is conservative or reborn conservative on all the other issues I care about.

I’ve heard a considerable number of criticisms of Perry. I know very little about him, but it intrigues me that you might support him.

Perry = GW Bush

That’s my take on it, and the truth is that I voted twice for GW Bush.

Throughout the pages of Free Republic, you can find pictures of a billboard with Pres Bush on it. It says: “bet you miss me now” or something like that.

That succinctly says what I would do regarding a Perry candidacy. I would consider him a much better deal than Barack Obama.

Perry is pro-life, pro-God, pro-gun, etc.

He’s made some missteps, but so did Pres Bush and I still voted for him a second time over Kerry, and Obama makes Kerry look like a walk in the park.

Man, at this point even many Democrats are better than Mr. Dunham.
All of the politically minded Democrats are too chicken to even run. Even Her Thighness isn't running this time.
I don't recall there having ever been another time in history that there wasn't even a token Party challenger.
Dunham has Democrats scared spit-less. What true cowards they really are.

BTW, I understand. I'll cease and desist.
At least you were willing to listen, though it obviously changed little in your mind.

It seems that once again, unless someone much better comes along, conservative Americans will be voting for the lesser of two evils.

I really do feel your pain on that one, Phil. I hate it, but GW Bush was right on the ultimately important things: God, Life, Guns, Family, National Security, Israel. He wasn't great on some of the other stuff, and Laura was a liberal voice whispering in his ear.

Rest assured that if any candidate violates those priorities of mine, that they will not get my vote.

The least likely to violate any of those is Palin, but she has an extremely tough road ahead of her. We'll see if she even tries to pull it off.
