Albemarle Road church fined $100 per branch for excessive tree pruning
charlotteobserver ^ | May. 28, 2011 | Brittany Penland

Every two to three years, Eddie Sales trims and prunes the crape myrtles at his church, Albemarle Road Presbyterian Church.

But this year, the city of Charlotte cited the church for improperly pruning its trees.

"We always keep our trees trimmed back because you don't want to worry about them hanging down in the way," said Sales, a church member.

The church was fined $100 per branch cut for excessive pruning, bringing the violation to $4,000.

"I just couldn't believe it when I heard about it," Sales said. "We trim our trees back every three years all over our property, and this is the first time we have been fined."

These people levying the fines are the same Environmental types who know nothing about trees or rivers. Here in Mtns they put beavers in areas where none ever existed, and fell trees into creeks at natural parks, so children can’t float down streams. They are kooks raised in city, with no common sense!

the left likes to say there is a separation of church and state

so why should the church bother to pay such a fine?

they exist outside the system

My friend you are a bit naive. That money does not go to save the endangered salmon or anything of sort, it goes into a general fund, or to fund their salaries and pensions.

Hey, they have Kyle Busch up in those parts. Kyle alone should sustain the speeding revenue. (168 mph in a 45 mph zone).

It looks like they trimmed those trees within an inch of their lives.

I used to drive past a house where they did the same thing. They basically cut all the way to the trunk and then these itty bitty branches grow. This is mutilation and wasteful. This last year the trees finally gave up and died.

Get an arborist to trim your trees.

Who gives a s***? They're trees.

Your sentimental post sounds more like they were painfully cutting limbs from a family member, as opposed to something made of freaking WOOD.

I thought there was no such thing as over-pruning a crape myrtle! Haven’t they ever heard of crape murder? I’ve seen them pruned back so far it looked like there was no possible way they would survive, but come summer, they were blooming in all their glory.

Imagine the pain those trees felt. We should appoint a court guardian and psychologist for them.

"Get an arborist to trim your trees..." that's on my next to do list, right after getting a nanny to tie my shoes. Memo to you: They're trees. Just trees. If you cut them too much one year, you let them grow the next. In the unlikely event that they die, use them for heat and plant new ones.

There is someone in town, big fancy house, who subjects his trees to that fancy European pruning system known as pollarding, which is abhorrent to the finely tuned naturalistic soul of one such as myself.

Nonetheless, covet not thine neighbor's ox, nor ass, nor trees. They're his dang ugly trees.

This and the story about the Missouri couple being fined $90,000 for selling more than $500 a year of rabbits need to go center stage with the Tea Party. Government is out of control. It’s time for revolution. I’m praying it will be peaceful as possible.

Were I in charge of landscaping at the church, I’d cut every trimmed tree down to the ground. Then I’d pay the fine for excessive trimming. And there would be no other trees planted on the property until the law is changed.

Well, more like selectively applying those laws to target certain groups and peoples to collect revenue.

But in general, yes, they make these laws to make innocent people guilty of something.

Big Brother has us so well trained that no one so much as said "private property" or "property rights". The state determines the best use for the land and the peasants comply. From the sixties culture, "The elderly rich couple lives in a four bedroom house and the poor single mother with five kids lives in a one bedroom apartment. This is the injustice of capitalism." Now the sixties culture is in charge at the federal, state and local levels.

This tree cutting is a symptom of a far more dangerous cancer.

We have tree huggers here too:

“City trees” includes those trees between the sidewalk and the curb.

Tree Work Permit

Since the City of Ithaca is lucky enough to have such a large and diverse urban forest, we understand that work will have to be done near the City trees. The Division of Parks and Forestry hopes to work with contractors and property owners to complete necessary work with the least amount of harm done to City trees as possible.

A Tree Permit is required for any contractor or property owner that will be working within the drip line of a city tree (drip line is at the edge of the canopy. i.e. stand at the work location and look up; if there are branches above, you are within the drip line of the tree). The forester will sign the permit after making comments specific to the job. Periodic inspection will confirm that the general rules for working near City trees (second page of the tree permit) and the forester's comments specific to that tree permit are being followed.

Many of these trees are HUGE. The drip line, canopy, may cover your entire front yard.

You are right on, slick. Crape Myrtles need to be trimmed way back every 2 or 3 years. If the ones shown in the photo are representative, there is absolutely nothing wrong with what he did. Hopefully the church has a good lawyer among its congregation. File an appeal of the fine and get a good arborist in to support you. The city guy doesn’t know what he is talking about.

I have had a battle royal going with my relatively new neighbor who moved to the U.S. from Russia. He has not trimmed his tree limbs for almost 3 years and they were beginning to kill my grass. Untrimmed trees are also a big problem when we have a hurricane. Tried to explain this to him and that his particular kind of tree was really designed to grow up and not out. Even gave him the name and phone number of my tree trimmer. Having no success I trimmed the lower branches myself. He came over to talk to me about it one day when I was walking out the door to go get some range time with some friends and had my gun in my hand. He thanked me and turned around and walked away.

"Haven’t they ever heard of crape murder?"

There is a crape myrtle on the corner of my house by the garage door. Planted by my late MIL way too close to the house and it grows until it hits the eaves of the house.

After pruning it severely several years, and not doing very much good, I cut the thing off at ground level with the chain saw. It still comes back 2 or 3 times a year and will be 6-7 feet tall in no time.

Most people don't realize that crape myrtles are trees -- not shrubs -- and you can't hardly kill them if you try.

“These people levying the fines are the same Environmental types who know nothing about trees or rivers.”

I was up at Rocky Mountain National Park today and noticed large sections of fencing around stands of trees and other vegetation. The Elk in the park are over populated and they refused to let hunters in to thin the herds so they spent millions to put fences around the trees so the Elk wouldn’t eat them. I truly don’t know what goes on in these peoples minds.
