A veteran Bexar County sheriff's deputy was fatally shot during an apparent ambush while waiting at a traffic light in his marked patrol vehicle early Saturday, according to the San Antonio Express.
Forty-five-year-old Sgt. Kenneth Vann was waiting at an intersection just after 2 a.m. Saturday when a small white vehicle pulled up next to him on the right side and started shooting through the front passenger window. Witnesses called police, who discovered Vann dead in the driver's seat.

Wow, what is up with this????? Not good. Prayers for family.
I predict the deed was done by one of San Antonio’s many gang members.......tho, of course, I don’t know that for sure.
Yes. Prayers for the family.
What a pathetic individual you are.
What in the h*ll are you talking about? What's the matter with you? Are you comfortable with grouping any member of a profession into one class? You need professional help.
Prayers to the family and friends of this brave public servant.
Sad...prayers up for Sgt. Vann’s loved ones.
Amen! Prayers for family and friends.
do you know if this police officer was the one that did that to the Marine???? Do you????!!!??? What a terrible terrible thing for you to say. Would you want to face his wife and children and say the very same thing to THEIR faces????? Shame on you! Shame on you!
An innocent man being killed is an innocent man being killed. You need to get a life.
There is a difference between some hick sheriff's department in New Mexico and the deputies who patrol San Antonio, a city bigger than Boston.
Wow. Are you sure you don't want to walk that statement back a bit?
Sounds like a target of opportunity. I wonder if the cartels are trying to send a message?
I am not a big fan of law enforcement but I don’t wish any of them dead. They, for the most part, are doing their best to help the communities where they work and live. They have families and loved ones just like we do. And when the cops are targets of random violence, it doesn’t bode well for the rest of us.
If this were the Olympics, you would win a gold for that record setting leap.
Tiger was that you?
The good guys need to control LE. The anti-LE posts I keep seeing are disturbing.
Once LE gets so bad that good people can’t rely on it, we have big problems and they need to be fixed.
Just the other day here in Michigan, police arrested 3 mexican illegals for assault and conspiracy to commit murder. The guy they beat down didn’t even have anything to do with the murder plot, he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
On a serious note, prayers up for this man's and the family.
Congratulations for one of the stupidest posts ever at FR.
Frostbutt didn’t get banned YET. Why?
Good grief this was in a different state and we don’t even know if the deputy was ever in a SWAT team at all let alone a hinky, suspicious raid like the one on the Marine in Pima County, Arizona under Sheriff Doofus Assparty.
I wonder if this was a particularly audacious gang initiation.
I don’t follow. The police arrested the right 3 guys, or the wrong 3 guys? Who was plotting to kill who?
Cartels send a message... lemme guess could it be “we hate the sheriff”?
Now every once in a blue moon, sheriffs and deputies get themselves mixed up in drug trade, but the gangs usually leave those compromised occifers alone because they will tend to nod and wink.
Not feeling sympathy seems a bit much given what we know - he could have been an upstanding man.
Not being surprised - that seems reasonable given what we’ve seen/heard about LE overreach of late.
I don’t think this was random violence. It sounds like someone wanted to target a cop when he wasn’t paying attention, and take him out. Maybe not any cop in particular, just one they could kill and get away with.
That’s not random. There’s a purpose in that. Stupid and crazy isn’t that tactically sound. This is the same way that cops would get gunned down in Mexico (before they got more overt about it). ‘Sicarios’, assassins, using motorcycles or small cars, would gun down lone targets then drive off and vanish.
Most cops, at heart are great cops and good men.
We don’t need to slaander them as a group.
likely gang/drug related and they were sending a message.....question is.....was it because he was a good cop.....or because he was a bad cop......
prayers for his family........
Prayers up for the fallen officer and his kin, and fingers crossed that the scum who did this are quickly apprehended.
The ambush of any LEO is a serious, serious thing, beyond the tragic loss of life. It’s a blow at society and the community.
This sounds like something the drug cartels in Mexico would do.
I hope they kill or capture the shooters in short order.
Bexar County and San Antonio are quite a ways away from the border with Mexico (remember Texas is BIG)... But this area is in the middle of various gangs... And then there could be other entanglements ...
Wow! What a shock to the family... prayers be with them..
Prayers for his family and prayers for the world we live in that incidents like this ever even happen.
We don’t know the specifics. perps are perps Bad, evil, etc. The guy is probably guilty as hell.
But some cops are just as bad, but with a badge. Hold on, I’m not indicting police, but there are those cops that generate a terrible name for themselves. Mostly covered up by their respective organizations and we never hear about it.
I love law enforcement, but they have many bad apples as well as any other organization.
The pd will start investigating this execution/murder by looking at the officers bank accounts and searching the officers home and any storage facilities he may have....that is if they want to find the killer... if they don’t do that they already know what’s up.
Police arrested the right guys. The illegals were planning on killing one man but the man they attacked just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Just goes to show that we need these animals out of our country.
I too was thinking along that line. Perhaps another one of those Mexican drug cartel murders that is spilling over into the US from the drug cartel capital of the (world) just to our South. Good job Obama on sealing our borders.
If he was a bad cop, I tend to think they’d do more than just a drive by assassination, because they’d have personal access to him sooner or later.
The message is simpler. “We’re in town and untouchable.”
you forgot a fourth reason.
Affirmative action hiring puts lousy people on the ranks of the force. Over far more qualified and decent people than those that can’t get over a D or F on the tests.
This is a huge problem because these losers make everyone on the force look bad.
This is very sad. I lived in San Antonio for 11 years and would go back there in a minute, if my parents didn’t live so far away. I loved it.
Too late, already there in many cities and towns.
Not to worry, the “Patriot Act” has been extended, overly zealous LE will remain unaccountable.
