SI investigation reveals eight-year pattern of violations under Tressel
SI.com ^ | Monday May 30, 2011 | George Dohrmann with David Epstein

Interesting tidbit from the story.

The latter interpretation is suggested by a story that has long circulated among college coaches and was confirmed to SI by a former colleague of Tressel's from Earle Bruce's staff at Ohio State in the mid-1980s. One of Tressel's duties then was to organize and run the Buckeyes' summer camp. Most of the young players who attended it would never play college football, but a few were top prospects whom Ohio State was recruiting. At the end of camp, attendees bought tickets to a raffle with prizes such as cleats and a jersey. According to his fellow assistant, Tressel rigged the raffle so that the elite prospects won -- a potential violation of NCAA rules. Says the former colleague, who asked not to be identified because he still has ties to the Ohio State community, "In the morning he would read the Bible with another coach. Then, in the afternoon, he would go out and cheat kids who had probably saved up money from mowing lawns to buy those raffle tickets. That's Jim Tressel."

OSU is doing its best to distance itself from Tressel so as to avoid USC like sanctions. I suspect that the OSU Compliance Dept. has been real lax too. That is what will decide how big a hammer the NCAA brings down on OSU.

But when you play ball with the media, all of these allegations and suppositions never see the light of day, until after the fact. Investigative journalists seem to be real selective on what becomes a scandal and what doesn’t.

Ohio State is going to be poisoned for a year or more. Probably won’t be able to hire a good coach for a while.

They likely will have an assistant take over in the mean time.

There are so many rumors and hints in college sports that point toward interference and manipulation at the professional level ... when will we admit the college sports scholarships are just a pre-paid lottery ticket to post-college paychecks?

I really have no problem with colleges "preparing" students/athletes for the "real world" - including that of professional sports. However, I would prefer if the schools, administration, media, and professional sports admitted to the whole system/scheme. And maybe put it all 'on the market' so we could place trades on candidates.

... and yes, the above is mostly satire / tongue-in-cheek ... or not.

This entire stinking mess certainly makes the Sugar Bowl officials look bad. Some of the Buckeyes’rules violations were known before the season ended, yet the Sugar Bowl invited Tressel and his merry band of cheaters to their bowl. They even gave Terrell Pryor their Player of the Game award. Very poor judgment from that bowl committee.

The problem is far more systemic that OSU and Jim Tressel.
It’s the athlete star struck,”we’re number one” culture and media that makes coaches, AD’s and others abandon their principles in order to survive and accommodate thug culture athletes who can’t read or write beyond a third grade level and have absolutely no moral bearings.

As you know, I live in Central Ohio as do you. Was it not an embarrassment that in a city of 800,000 the media completely ignored Memorial Day for this crap? Channel 10 ran a scroll for EIGHT HOURS before the 5:00 PM news.

And, I’ll pass on some of these stories. Unamed sources blah blah blah...crotchety below average coaches or idiot (Ray Small)l wanting to be in the limelight. No thanks.

But on 610, may of the hosts and callers did give proper due to our troops and Memorial Day.

I'm sure that Tressel learned lots of lessons from Earle Bruce. Bruce was at Iowa State, and while famous for his "3 yards and a cloud of dust" offense, he was also famous for getting good players who had never even heard of Iowa State - they didn't even know where Iowa was. Pretty much everyone knew what was going on with that. However, he had a good enough record and a good enough recruiting history that OSU hired him.

Gene Smith should be forced to resign as well. The men’s basketball program is in very goods hands with Thad Matta, as are some of the other varsity programs at OSU. The men’s volleyball team for the first time won the NCAA championship last month, although it had been a mainstay of the Final Four since the 1970’s.

IMO the new AD should bring back Mike Dantonio (current MSU head coach) as head coach who was the defensive coordinator when OSU beat Miami for the National Championship.

Urban Meyer will flake out under the pressue just like at Florida. Jon Gruden would be a PR hire.

If you want a name that would shake things up, I would go with Bobby Petrino (Arkansas head coach). He is offensive minded and has been successful at several universities.

I live in the South. CFB is king. How do you think the SEC has won the last 5 BCS Championships...all the teams in the SEC compete against each other for the best players. If you don’t think that some of these elite players are being “incentivized” to attend one school over another you are naive.

You must be a geography major. Columbus is the CAPITAL of the state of Ohio, the very seat of government. So don’t believe there isn’t a lot of wealth and power in Columbus. Plus, Ohio State is a city within a city.

USC’s campus meanwhile is a postage stamp compared to the scale of LA. At least at UCLA they have a true campus environment. USC is for the most part a commuter school.

So if USC can’t keep their athletes on campus they have to do a better job of montioring their activities.

You're right, I despise Ohio State. Why? Because it is the tail that wags the dog known as Central Ohio. Just about anything that is proposed in this area has to meet with the approval of OSU before it goes forward. Gordon Gee, Andy Geiger and the OSU trustees tried every trick in the book to prevent the construction of Nationwide Arena and the awarding of an NHL franchise to Columbus. Thank God for the fortitude of John McConnell, Dimon McPherson, Greg Lashutka and Ron Pizzuti. They saved the day.

The constant media bombardment about OSU football is beyond nauseating. The childish advertising schemes by local businesses attempting to tie themselves to OSU football in order to curry favor with fans is pathetic. And speaking of the fans, they are the most obnoxious, petty, ill-mannered team followers in the United States with the exception of fans of any Philadelphia team.

Why do you live in Ohio if you hate it so much?

I hate OSU, the high taxes and the weather. So what? I know what your question really means: If you don't like the Buckeyes, get out. Sorry Charlie. I've got a great job and a family here.

All you seem to like about Ohio is a hockey team that nobody cares about.

Who is this "nobody," Kemosabe? The Jackets outdrew OSU men's basketball five years straight, at a ticket price that averages double or more than the hoops ticket. The main reason attendance is down is the economy, although winning needs to pick up, for sure. Not everyone in Central Ohio fawns over OSU and there are countless transplants from other hockey markets who are Jacket fans.

BTW, how many Blue Jackets are thugs? None. How many have ever been arrested? None. Now ask those questions about your beloved football factory.

So, yes, I have an intense hatred of Ohio State. Deal with it, as I have to deal with their yahoo fans and drooling media.

I get what you’re saying. I’ve said for years that if I had to live in Ohio, and particularly the Columbus area, and was not raised a Buckeye fan, I would probably hate them too. As I said earlier, 40% of the fans make me absolutely cringe. Unfortunately, they make about 80% of the noise. You’re right about the Blue Jackets players being better citizens than the OSU football and basketball players. Maybe hockey has caught on in Columbus, but in the rest of the state it’s a sport that is followed once every 4 years. I was a little harsh with you, but this whole thing has really put me in a raw mood. I thought Tressel was better than this, but he’s just like the rest of the major college coaches, if not worse. Well, nobody’s worse than Pete Carroll was.

This deal almost makes John Cooper look good. He was simply clueless, which is a greater crime at OSU than being a liar like Tressel. As John Corby said today, Tressel comes off looking like Jimmy Swaggart in the rank hypocrisy department. That is what really burns people the most.

A lot of Tressel supporters are screaming about the media treatment he's getting, but who can blame the local sports reporters who covered him for ten years. The crew at WTVN is having a field day, even Corby, who usually doesn't let fly on local celebs.

Until these universities start saying "no" to the recruitment of thugs like Pryor, Smith and Clarett, this will go on ad nauseum. Woody wouldn't have been able to coach in today's environment, that's for sure.
