SI investigation reveals eight-year pattern of violations under Tressel

Interesting tidbit from the story.

The latter interpretation is suggested by a story that has long circulated among college coaches and was confirmed to SI by a former colleague of Tressel's from Earle Bruce's staff at Ohio State in the mid-1980s. One of Tressel's duties then was to organize and run the Buckeyes' summer camp. Most of the young players who attended it would never play college football, but a few were top prospects whom Ohio State was recruiting. At the end of camp, attendees bought tickets to a raffle with prizes such as cleats and a jersey. According to his fellow assistant, Tressel rigged the raffle so that the elite prospects won -- a potential violation of NCAA rules. Says the former colleague, who asked not to be identified because he still has ties to the Ohio State community, "In the morning he would read the Bible with another coach. Then, in the afternoon, he would go out and cheat kids who had probably saved up money from mowing lawns to buy those raffle tickets. That's Jim Tressel."

Buckeye fans are the most mean-spirited obnoxious a$$holes in college football. Hope they take to program out and shoot it.

Agree 100%. And I've lived in the Columbus suburbs for 20 years.

That's for sure. The Dispatch online is about to spontaneously combust.

Thank God for the NHL finals and the NHL draft.

Greetings from another Central Ohioan ~

610 had it on ALLL stinking day also.... well, for about 11 hour.......
I dont watch the 10tv news very much at all. Usually only for the weather report and that’s it.
To answer your question, yes, it was disgusting beyond belief that the LSM ignored Memorial Day.
But on 610, may of the hosts and callers did give proper due to our troops and Memorial Day.
Wonder exactly *who* it was that decided to do this crap today instead of tomorrow ?
Gee or Smith ?

Oh how I wished the LSM would *investigate* Opukeface like they’ve done with OSU the past few months.
Oh, I thought I heard crickets chirping....chirp chirp

610 usually does the right thing. But Channel 10, The Dispatch and 97.1 The Fan are all scum, and all owned by the Dispatch Media Group.

I love the Blue Jackets, but hate that The Dispatch owns 10% of them.

If I ever win the lottery...

They wanted to get ahead of the SI article on Tuesday.

Too little, too late.

Columbus is a small city; Los Angelos is huge. Ohio State coaches had to know what was going on within their team more than USC.

Ohio State deserves to be hit with penalties at least as harsh as USC.

Anyone want to bet against some Ohio State supporter hiring a PI to find out what really happened with Cam Newton at Auburn?

I'm sure that Tressel learned lots of lessons from Earle Bruce. Bruce was at Iowa State, and while famous for his "3 yards and a cloud of dust" offense, he was also famous for getting good players who had never even heard of Iowa State - they didn't even know where Iowa was. Pretty much everyone knew what was going on with that. However, he had a good enough record and a good enough recruiting history that OSU hired him.

From an unknown source, from a time before the Tressel era (1980's?), comes a flimsy allegation of something that is absolutely unprovable and without any evidence whatsoever.

All that cheating and he still couldn't recruit a player who could actually run.

Watching Big 10 football is like watching paint dry.

I am a big MSU fan also and dislike Sabin as much as you. There is a whole cult of Sabin haters in Arkansas. They even sell tee shirts and sweat shirts that say “SUCK FABIN” Too funny!

Gene Smith should be forced to resign as well. The men’s basketball program is in very goods hands with Thad Matta, as are some of the other varsity programs at OSU. The men’s volleyball team for the first time won the NCAA championship last month, although it had been a mainstay of the Final Four since the 1970’s.

IMO the new AD should bring back Mike Dantonio (current MSU head coach) as head coach who was the defensive coordinator when OSU beat Miami for the National Championship.

Mike Dantonio was the defensive coordinator at OSU when they beat Miami for the national championship. IMO he should be the next in line to be head coach at OSU.

Urban Meyer will flake out under the pressue just like at Florida. Jon Gruden would be a PR hire.

If you want a name that would shake things up, I would go with Bobby Petrino (Arkansas head coach). He is offensive minded and has been successful at several universities.

I live in the South. CFB is king. How do you think the SEC has won the last 5 BCS Championships...all the teams in the SEC compete against each other for the best players. If you don’t think that some of these elite players are being “incentivized” to attend one school over another you are naive.

You must be a geography major. Columbus is the CAPITAL of the state of Ohio, the very seat of government. So don’t believe there isn’t a lot of wealth and power in Columbus. Plus, Ohio State is a city within a city.

USC’s campus meanwhile is a postage stamp compared to the scale of LA. At least at UCLA they have a true campus environment. USC is for the most part a commuter school.

So if USC can’t keep their athletes on campus they have to do a better job of montioring their activities.
