As slimey a person as Edwards is, if the money never went into the campaign, I don’t see a campaign finance related crime.
While the exposure of the affair would have affected his campaign in a very negative way, this is no different than other politicians, or even non-politicians, who have paid off the mothers of their illegitimate children in exchange for silence.
Where is the crime if friends of Edwards gave money to this woman unless there was some sort of quid pro quo?
I’d like to see Edwards go to prison for being a scumbag, but that is not a crime.
