@RepWeiner beats a hasty retweet
Washington Post ^ | June 1, 2011 | Dana Milbank

Posted on 06/01/2011 5:06:35 PM PDT by Second Amendment First

Memorial Day barbecues may be over, but this town is enjoying a Weiner roast of obscene proportions.

On the spit: Rep. Anthony Weiner of New York, perhaps the most pugilistic Democrat in the House, who now finds himself in a fight he does not relish. Over the holiday weekend, a waist-down photograph of an aroused man in boxer briefs was sent from Weiner’s official Twitter account to tens of thousands of followers.

Weiner had a plausible explanation: His Twitter account was hacked and he didn’t send the photo.

That’s where the plausibility ends. Asked by NBC’s Luke Russert whether the photograph was if his own genitals, Weiner replied: “You know, I can’t say with certitude.”

So the hacker not only got into Weiner’s Twitter account but also into his pants? Or, Weiner has a whole collection of lewd photographs of himself, but he can’t be sure the private parts in this particular photo are his own?

Adding another element of suspicion, Weiner said he would not ask federal authorities to investigate, choosing instead to hire a private security firm. “I’m not sure I want to put national, federal resources into trying to figure out who posted a picture,” he reasoned. “I’m not really sure it rises – no pun intended – to that level.”

It should not have risen beyond minor amusement. But Weiner’s handling of the situation, a textbook case of bad PR, swelled it into a summer scandal.

Weiner sure has a swollen ego. He even thinks he can run and win the NYC mayors race after Weinergate. Even some Japanese tourists disagreed with that..’No ray he win erection.’

You mean he doesn't know if he ever took a picture of himself in his shorts?

#1) Who pays the twitter account or cell phone bill? Is the phone used for congressional business?

#2) If it is being paid for out of the congressman's expenses as part of his expenses, the tweets, emails, and voicemails are all belonging to the people and are not matters of privacy.

As with any employee using a cell phone on company business, this is an established fact in the courts. All Weiner Tweets, emails, voicemails, belong to the public.

A secondary issue is security of information the idiot has been zipping around the airwaves. If he's been mishandling his own affairs, lord knows what he's been doing with government information and where it might end up?

First time I can remember enjoying a Dana Milbank column.

Really? And a Republican Member just resigned why? Funny how Dana has already forgotten that.

I liked it when Rush Limbaugh complained that Weiner got the shaft.

What? Was Barney Frank involved here too?

I think it’s the first time I enjoyed Milbank also. The MSM is enjoying this even though it’s a lib being grilled, because they just can’t resist the fun of a Weiner roast.

If a GOP congressman from the same state lost his job over a dating list with photo of a bare male chest, then absolutely Weiner has to resign. This scandal is substantially worse, and Weiner is lying about it, too.

Weiner is hoping this all goes away if he can run out the clock and drag this out. We cannot let this happen, and I am calling my Democratic congressman to demand Weiner’s resignation.

Weiner won’t go until he is pressured to do so.

If this guy did this and worked for private industry, using his cell phone to take inapproporiate and unprofessional images of persons, places, or things, he'd be fired with extreme cause so fast he'd be sitting on the curb outside crying for a cab with his posessions.

The ever expanding double standards between industry and government jobs in terms of the required levels of integrity and professionalism inversely proportionate to compensation and job security are pathetic. The public needs to see these matters as actionable as they would be in their own lives. Fire the bum/s.

I think that Weiner has positioned himself for the gay vote.

this dilemma could be easily solved if Wiener just drops his pants and we can compare drawers photos.

will the real Weiner please stand up?

Milbank takes issue with Weiner’s ridiculous response rather than with the “underlying” genitalia tweet, which he tells us we should all laugh off. If a married GOP Congressman had done the same, I’m sure he’d find it less goofy and more worthy of investigation.

Milbank also accepts as fact the assertion that Weiner never met the lucky coed who got the tweet. Yet I’ve heard several reports that Weiner was one of only 91 people following her.

Thru Milbank’s op, the Post can say it addressed the issue, but it pushes the reader away from calling for Weiner to resign.
