63 is hardly old.(This is coming from a 35-yr-old).
“If hes reached age 63 with no retirement savings (after time in the Marines and the Mass. state government?) ... if hes earning a good salary, and his wife is also working, but theyre struggling to get by ... if hes supporting a non-handicapped adult child, at his age ... then surely he cant blame *everything* about his life on bad government policies. Wasnt there any point in his life at which he might have affected the trajectory?
This sounds like a setup or a plant ... or someone whos assimilated to Im a victim, too! culture without realizing it.”
That was my first thought. I turned 64 today and have been retired for a year. Life is good when you follow a plan for the end game.
This one’s a keeper - thanks! Many, many good points here.
Now sixty three and no longer civilized. Lets leave it at that.
50% of Americans agre with Mr. Hall.
The other 50% say “Tough luck! You owe us.”
I’m tired of these freeloaders expecting something and nothing and I’m not going to take it anymore!
Now give me my social security and medicare!
/sarc(?)
I’m 48 and I’m also tired. I’ve done everything right, and yet all of our savings is now gone, taxed away, and we’re underwater on our home. Forget trying to get out of debt, forget ever enjoying our “Golden Years.” We’re likely to go bankrupt trying to pay for healthcare that we’ll never get through Medicare, because it WILL be gone by that point.
At least RIGHT NOW people are being taken care of. In 20 years? Forget it.
America is about to go through some really rough times.
63 is the new 53. ;-)
That’s uplifting. By that logic I guess we should all swallow a bullet now.
I thought 60 was the new 40!
And hopefully many times more to come. The sentiments expressed in that post need to be repeated over and over again.
Happy birthday! My father will be 75 on Saturday. He and my mother own a retirement condo where they can get the services they need as his Alzheimer's Disease progresses, and my brother and I are self-supporting.
Yes, there are many issues in our country, and many people getting something for nothing ... but to reach 63 and believe that your own choices have *nothing* to do with your situation is pretty scary.
I'll be looking forward to going back to work when I reach your age, after 40 years of child-rearing ;-).
He speaks for a multitude of people in this country.....Like him, I am glad I am 72 and won’t be around for too many more years...Also feel sorry for my grandchildren who never knew what it was to grow up in a country that hears from the government daily. When I was a kid, the news was 1/2 daily. 20 minutes of new, 5 minutes of sports and 5 minutes of weather. The rest of the time was for life....
One of the best posts I recall seeing at FR, recently at least. Let’s win back the country for our kids and (hopefully) grandkids.
Thanks for the ping. He lists many of the things we should be working to change.

Tired of being a hypocrite?
So you defend one vice as not being a choice, and blast the other as being a choice, when in reality both happen to be rooted in one's genetics, that a person has no control over ... If That's not a hypocrite I don't know what is ... It has been proven a person with a drug or alcohol problem has a disease ... it is up to that individual to take care of their disease, or die and suffer the consequences ...
That stupid mentality is what started drug and alcohol prohibition, in which we Americans have lost rights ... and then people on our side complain and cry over loss of freedoms ... when you support governments role in telling us what to do with one thing, WHAT STOPS GOVERNMENT from telling us what to do with EVERYTHING. It doesn't, and that's where we are at today.
Because of 63 year old's such as himself regardless of his political ideology, the country is in the situation that it is today that he rails against.
To those who want to listen to him because he served in the military ... John Kerry served in the military, does that make him a great person? Colin Powell served in the military does that make a wonderful person? The ANSWER is NO. I'm thankful for the service, but then again, during WWI, WWII, and onward, service was MANDATORY for many. The troops today are completely volunteer, and in my opinion, deserve WAY MORE CREDIT. (And yes, I know plenty volunteered for service from the founding of this country until we turned into an all volunteer force, and they have my up-most Respect) [ I did not catch in the article if he volunteered or was drafted forgive me on that ... ]
He want's to help some people and not others ... typical Hypocritical stance that has gotten us to the point we are at today ...
One thing I can not stand is those who constantly try to live in the past, or give up on the future ... maybe your at the end of your road, but MANY OF US ARE NOT.
One other thing I know, I am NOT to blame for the way this country is right now ... I do believe his GENERATION is to blame ...
And yes I am extremely bitter, the lack of common sense from the Left and the Right at times causes my head to spin, especially from those older than myself who constantly want to blast the country how it is now, but who ultimately helped shape where we are now.
I to am TIRED of listening to hopeless knuckle heads (all older - go figure) who give up all hope on the future and throw in the towel.
I can't wait till 30 years from now when I am an old bitter fart. sigh ...
“I’m not against Hispanics. Most of them are Catholic, and it’s been a few hundred years since Catholics wanted to kill me for my religion............”
Why bash Catholics in this article? It seems a bit off the subject matter, to me. I could make my own comment like, “ever heard of Oliver Cromwell?”....., but it’s mostly history from a long time ago. The Reformation/Catholic Counter-Revolution happened nearly 6 centuries ago.
Other than that, the rest of the oped piece was very good.

I’m 63 too. This guy is spot on.
You come across as a selfish jerk.
