Two high-profile attacks on hotel maids are leading to a change in security at two Manhattan hotels: The Wall Street Journal reports that according to union officials, the Pierre Hotel and the Sofitel New York will equip their room attendants with panic buttons in case they are attacked.

The Journal reports the change came after a meeting with union officials:

"Let everybody in the world traveling to New York know that when they stay in a hotel room, the person cleaning that room is armed with a button that they can immediately press if you're stupid enough to get inappropriate," said Peter Ward, president of the New York Hotel & Motel Trades Council, which represents about 30,000 workers.

A Pierre spokeswoman, Nora Walsh, confirmed that the hotel will give room attendants the alarms—modeled after those used by some elderly people to alert a central security office—as soon as a system can be devised.

...

Mr. Ward added that the union has begun working on legislation to make panic buttons mandatory at all New York hotels and would be asking for language requiring them in the next union contract. The current contract expires next year.

The change comes after former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn and Mahmoud Abdel Salam Omar, the chairman of an Egyptian salt-production company, were accused of sexually attacking...

Yup. These people pay $3000 a night for a hotel room and they act like trash from the wrong side of town.

They aren't the Elite. They are just elitests.

I think we should equip hotel maids with Colt 1911s instead.

Guys like this are predators.

Because of his position, he goes to a hotel and expects service from the hired help. And we’re not talking room service here.

He just expects those of a lower socio-economic class to cater to him.

Odds are that this attack was not the very first time he had ever done something like that.

Bloomberg will require that the panic buttons also be able to receive emergency broadcasts from the White House.

I'd prefer a cattle prod (not that there is any difference, besides symbolism)...

LOL! Sounds good to me! But it might add to the cost of cleaning the room...

Forcible rape used to be a capital offense until Kinsey and the psychologists successfully lobbied to turn these evil violent acts into irresistable medical conditions and got the penalties reduced. I say we bring back the death for forcible rape.

a relative of mine who worked for many years in a big hotel in a major city once told me that if I was ever staying in such a place and there was a fire or crime happening, get an OUTSIDE LINE and call the police or fire department directly. Don’t tell the front desk because they’ll just try to handle it themselves and hush it all up. I’m just sayin’....

Let’s hope the button is connected to either a safety or a taser.

Great because no man is ever wrongly accused by a woman of rape. And with DNA evidence it is easy to produce evidence of rape. The college girls have a whole industry built around taking back the night and denying drunken indiscretion. Why all women know that one in ten women is raped at lease once in their life. That means we can just reduce the male population by around 10%. Winner for the men hoarding all the women. (This post is not meant to condone actual rape but to point out the tenuousness of this idea.) i.e. be careful about giving women even more power over the lives of men. They have plenty already. vis a vis the courts.
