WESTFIELD — City officials say no one was killed, and no injuries attributed to yesterday’s tornado have been reported. Mayor Daniel M. Knapik said in a briefing this morning that despite national news service reports that two people were killed in Westfield, no one suffered bodily injury from the storm.

Knapik said the city is receiving help from a variety of state and regional resources, including the Army National Guard’s 357th Engineers from Pittsfield, the State Police and the Southampton Fire Department, and a caravan of state workers is on its way from Boston, he said, to assist local residents affected by Wednesday’s storm. “The most important thing after last night is people are safe,” he said.

While several city streets remained closed, either choked with debris from trees or with live power lines. Police Lt. David Ragazzini said Shaker Road remains closed as do Pontoosic and Little River roads. Others are sporadically closed as utility crews need, he said. Otherwise, traffic is moving normally in most of the city.

Emergency Management Director Jim Wiggs said the crews’ jobs are complicated by large tree limbs on the lines, creating tension.“Once they get those limbs off there, the lines snap back viciously,” he said. He estimated it could take several hours for G&E linemen to get all the lines cleared. Most of the city’s streets are open and passable, Knapik said.

Now, homeowners will start the cleanup on their property. Even with the declaration of a State of Emergency by Governor Deval Patrick, state and federal funds are not available to clear private property. That will require insurance coverage or do it yourself. Knapik said groups of volunteers are headed to Westfield armed with chainsaws and Bobcats to help clear debris

The last time a tornado touched down in Springfield was 1972. When the Bruins last won the Stanley Cup.

Indeed, Biggirl! Very Scary!

Yesterday was a very eventful day.
Hopefully we won’t have another of those for a couple of decades again!
