Mitt Romney, Jon Huntsman and the GOP: America is ready for a Mormon president
Telegraph UK ^ | June 3, 2011 | Tim Stanley

Posted on 06/03/2011 8:00:10 AM PDT by greyfoxx39

The GOP race now has two Mormon candidates – Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman. Predictably, the question of whether or not America is ready for a Mormon President has been raised on both sides of the Atlantic. To be fair to the critics, the theology and history of the Church of the Latter-Day Saints is a little eccentric.

-SNIP-

But Romney and Huntsman should not run away from their church. Indeed, they would do well to put it front and centre of their campaigns, to challenge the fragile tolerance of the 21st century electorate. They should seize this opportunity to promote a much-maligned and misunderstood faith – a faith that, coincidentally, could have electoral benefits. Mormons tend to be well-educated and surprisingly cosmopolitan people.

-SNIP-

Romney and Huntsman could exploit the Church of Latter-Day Saints’ history of terrible persecution. Joseph Smith and his army of wives were driven from state to state, fleeing angry mobs wherever he settled. In 1844, the prophet was dragged from jail by an angry mob and murdered. His killers were acquitted by sympathetic juries. The Mormons have a narrative of suffering and survival against the odds that makes their story far more universal than their peculiar theology suggests.

-SNIP-

The story of persecution would play well among a Christian minority who feel similarly neglected, or oppressed, by the modern liberal state. The Church’s reputation for social conservatism could help cover up the flip-flopping that Romney has pulled off on abortion.

I will NEVER vote for phony conservative Mitt Romney, however.

Sadly, Mormons are not Christian, and another non Christian in the White house would effectively destroy all historical efficacy of Christianity on America.

Every fundamental preacher is screaming as loudly and maturely as possible ... "Don't allow this to happen, America"

The Udalls were not very good Mormons. Voting for them was like voting for a protestant. Not so with Romney.

Salt Lake City is half non-Mormon, so things said in this article about SLC do not necessarily apply to Mormons.

No theocracy, please! And no pro-abortion candidates who support a bogus “health care reform” that brings rationing and stifles innovation. Repeal the bogus “reform” we’ve got, and start over—REALLY over!!!!

I don't give a flying rat's ass about being a Mormon. What I care about is the fact that he's a much better democrat than a Republican, and I wish he'd leave our party and get on the primary with the libtards.

Romney is in no way a Republican representative no matter what the media say . . . and I'm sure that Obambi and the libtards will do what they can to get him on our ticket.

Romney! Go away!

Part of the Mormon eschatology is the establishment of a Mormom theocracy in the United States.

The Mormon “New Jeruselem” is to be in Independence, Ks.

But... since they have “Jesus Christ” in their long name, they’re “Christians”...

"And the Lord had caused the cursing to come upon them, yea, even a sore cursing, because of their iniquity. For behold, they had hardened their hearts against him, that they had become like unto a flint; wherefore, as they were white, and exceedingly fair and delightsome, that they might not be enticing unto my people the Lord God did cause a skin of blackness to come upon them." - Book of Mormon, 2 Nephi 5:21

Mormon candidates have a terrible problem concerning the LDS Church's scriptures and former doctrines. A few examples of the issues are listed here.

In order to trash his opponent, a candidate only needs to ask Willard if he believes the Book of Mormon is true. Either way Mitt answers, he opens up a bad can of worms

I’d gladly vote for a conservative Mormon but I’ll play hell voting for two left leaning morons Mormons like Romney or Hunstman. If they are the best we have then we might as well stay home because I will not ever support either of them. I’ll vote third party and if that gives us Obama then that is what we deserve. I however don’t believe it will come to that. We are going to have a real choice and a good candidate to support whole heartedly. This media posturing is because they would like nothing more than to have a weak tapioca Republican who thinks fighting is telling sweet lies and being nice is a strategy. Just yesterday Romney said that “We didn’t know how Obama would govern”. If he didn’t no the hell what Obama was all about then that alone makes him unfit for President because that confirms he is an idiot. Romney is worse than the establishment, he is a game player, a liar for hire. Someone who seems to believe saying crap he knows is a bold faced lie and the furthest thing from straight talk is the way to the White House.

Romney and Huntsman could exploit the Church of Latter-Day Saints’ history of terrible persecution.

This seems to indicate that the mormon candidates will try to counter the racist and polygamist past of the mormon church by playing the victim card. They've been doing it for 180 years.

I can't see how they can logically believe that running a mormon against a black man can possibly be successful, but mormons are deeply ingrained with the belief that a mormon will "save the constitution".

"“Anyone can look at the words of the Prophet Joseph Smith... Brigham Young and others.... I have always felt that they meant that sometime the question of whether we are going to proceed on the basis of the Constitution would arise and at this point government leaders who were Mormons would be involved in answering that question.”- George Romney, interview in “A Man’s Religion and American Politics: An Interview with Governor Romney,” Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought, Autumn 1967, v. 2, p. 25

Additionally, here is a link to a very complete article on actual "persecution" of mormons.

Violence in Early Mormonism - Was It All Unjust Persecution?

As the author notes: "Even with my strong views regarding the errors of the Mormon faith, religious persecution as properly defined, is always wrong. I say properly defined because many Mormons feel that any verbal disagreement with their faith is a type of persecution. However, it gets a little tiring to hear of Mormons constantly pointing to their 19th century persecutions as if this is some sort of sign of God's divine approval on the LDS Church. If violence against a certain faith were the only way to determine truth, then certainly the Mormons themselves would have to recognize that our Christian faith was just as viable as theirs.

Can a Mormon, off the top of his head, recall when the last Mormon was killed just because he was a Mormon? Certainly we have heard of Mormons being tragically killed while serving missions, but these cases involve circumstances other than true martyrdom (robberies, car accidents, being mistaken for CIA agents, etc). On the other hand, it is not uncommon to hear of Christians around the world who are being killed because they refuse to denounce their belief that Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. While martyrdom seems to be a thing of the past for the Mormons, it is a common occurrence among those who have placed their total trust in the Jesus of the Bible."

(1) Romney's religious beliefs are the least of his problems; his potical beliefs (and record) is the problem.

(2) This could be an intentional tactic by Romney. By focusing on his religion, it prevents people from focusing on his record.

He can never get away from that travesty, IMO.

2. Huntsman allowed himself to be sidetracked by NObama & sent to China as Ambassador.

Not showing any strength of character, IMO.

For me, it is not an issue of being Mormon.

It is much more an issue of trying to re-invent themselves on a week-to week basis.

I will not vote for any candidate who has slippery positions on any topic. Show me some backbone. Show me you have something that is in your charachter that cannot be wrangled all over the place.
