Top White House economist Goolsbee steps down

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Top White House economist Austan Goolsbee said on Monday he was stepping down, marking the exit of one of President Barack Obama's closest aides at a time when new signs of weakness have emerged in the economy.

Less than a year after he was named chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, Goolsbee plans to return to his teaching job at the University of Chicago, the Obama administration said in a statement. Goolsbee's departure leaves Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner as the sole remaining senior member of the original economic team. Goolsbee and Obama got to know each other at the University of Chicago, where the president had been a lecturer in constitutional law. Goolsbee advised Obama's campaign for the Senate in 2004 and his 2008 presidential campaign.

Goolsbee has been one of the administration's more visible spokesmen on the economy and lately has emphasized his view that the recovery remains solidly on track, despite a report on Friday showing tepid jobs growth and a rise in the unemployment rate in May to 9.1 percent from 9 percent in April.

I am loving the fact that over the past year, as the wheels have fallen off the WH's stimulus program, all the wizards that were going to save us have been bailing out. I sure will miss Ghoulsbees brand of blatant incompetence.

"He has helped steer our country out of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, and although there is still much work ahead, his insights and counsel have helped lead us toward an economy that is growing and creating millions of jobs," Obama said in a statement

If any normal person said this, he'd be taken away by guys in white coats for a long quiet rest somewhere away from sharp objects. It's completely insane.

Another Obama economic advisor failure abandons the sinking ship like any smart rat would.

Should we also say, another proto-marxist heads back to academia to screw up more impressionable minds?

Marxists aren’t born today. They are created.

Hey one helluva job there Goolsbee. If I understand this correctly to be an economic expert one need only have the intelligence of a brick. In a logical world this guy would have a hard time finding a teaching job in an elementary school.

One of the sickest 'altruistic' truth/lies in human existence. Teachers are always good according to the powers that control them. The powers are currently in chaos, the 'teachers' are currently revolting around the prospect of being decent human beings.

I offer no apologies. I.m not an 'elder' here. I am/ we are pissed.

Wow... that’s funny. And sad. Only one of those people seemed to recognize that Keynesian referred to a school of economic thought.

We’re done for.

If the University of Chicago has any credibility whatsoever, the only way to allow Goolsbee back on campus is as an undergrad studying to get his BA in hopes he might learn something useful.

At one time, Milton Friedman led the Economics Department at the University of Chicago.

Indeed, Friedman and his students -- like Thomas Sowell and Walter Williams -- represented the so-called "Chicago School" of Economics.

Comparatively speaking, Austan Goolsbee is a dumbass and is not to be mentioned in the same breath as Friedman and his students.
