Colt McCoy's Wife Implies Some Texas Football Players Accepted Benefits

by Jason Kirk • Jun 7, 2011 5:18 PM EDT

Rachel McCoy, wife of former Texas Longhorns QB Colt McCoy, "randomly" called up ESPN radio's Colin Cowherd Tuesday. She was asked what kinds of things her husband was offered against the rules during his playing days in Austin. Here's the audio, and here are some of the key quotes, including one portion that would have had Mack Brown jumping out of his seat if Mack Brown was a big enough Miami Heat fan to listen to Colin Cowherd:

Star-divide

People in Texas are just being friendly and they don't mean anything by it at all. They don't realize most of the time it is a violation. Texas is very clear with their players ... You cannot expect 19- to 20-year-old men to not accept free stuff while they're in college ... There's no way that college kids can really, honestly say no to all this stuff ... It's hard for a lot of these guys to even know ... I saw so many of his teammates who maybe didn't have some of that self-control to be able to say no to somebody. It's hard because you've got adults who you respect who you think will know what's right and what's wrong ... You do what adults say; that's how you're taught. So you have adults offering things, promising the world, doing all this stuff: we're taught to go along with that. That's the respectful thing to do. It's interesting to see adults really putting kids in these positions where they're taught to agree and go along and respect.

She said it's hard for college players to see their jerseys being sold while knowing they're not allowed to accept so much as a sandwich. The villain in her story: 40-year-old boosters, who just want to be remembered once players reach the NFL. She said McCoy was frequently approached by agents, but brushed it off and let his dad handle it.

That "so many of his teammates ..." line is the one that's raising eyebrows from College Station to Columbus and beyond. Whether she meant to imply what she did imply is anyone's guess, but it's hard to take that portion any other way. Either way, it would be a leap to take her statement as one that's entirely blown the cover off of widespread campus corruption.

Listen to the whole thing yourself; I'm certainly not trying to take anything she said out of context.

I'm shocked to hear that college footballs players get illegal perks.

A reporter for Yahoo sports was on a sports talk show last week and implied there was a big story about to break about a major program. He said it would be a “10 on a scale of 10.” This may be it.

Haha - Hey, thanks Rachel - “so many of his teammates” - that “might” be a red flag to the NCAA, however, after last years dismissal of Scam Newton’s accusations, I doubt UT will even get a slap.

I don’t think so, you need to look further east. Here’s a hint, the asterisk is Camtastic.

I wonder what induced her to come forth with this information? Is it possible Colt felt guilty, didn't want to speak on it but signed off on her calling in?

I'd let her say whatever she wants, whenever she wants, however she wants to whoever she wants ...

Ain't just Texas football players.

A few college buddies of mine were on scholarship for a Division I sports program, that will remain nameless, but wasn't "big money football" like Texas. These guys used to pay $30/month for their apartments, take cars on "test drives" for extended periods of time, and so on.

Buddies called them "angels". I say "A fool and their money is soon parted". What the hell, they could afford it, and I drank plenty of my buddies' beers, too.

I used to date a girl who TA'd a remedial math class.... referred to as "Math for Jocks". She'd frequently get multiple choice tests that were 80% incorrect, but all of the answers were merely shifted off by one question, where they'd copied the answers down wrong. When she pointed this out, she was told "Close enough, call it a "C". Pretty soon, she stopped pointing it out.

Whatever. So long as people have a talent, others will exist to exploit it.

It sounded to me like he meant something that wasn’t publicly known yet. The Auburn situation has been out there for a while.

At the big schools the path to paying the players is through the palyer’s girlfriend.

The NCCA rules state that I can not buy lunch for a player, however there in no rule that I cannot give a new car to a player’s girlfriend.

The football players earn a great deal of cash for the big time football schools and the players should be paid.

As an Ohioan I believe the trouble Ohio State has had is dwarfed by the schools in the southeast. There is going to be a lot of scrutiny now and others schools are going to go down hard, making Ohio State look like the angels they are. Bring it on!, because the big ten is the gentlemen of college football.

(I’m flame proof in my Ohio State official gameware)

I listened to the replay - I think she thought she was being funny in claiming she and Colt had a joke that she wasn’t worried about other women, but was worried about the attention from 40 year old men! She kept harping on the 40 year old men who offer things to the players and how they should be fined or face some kind of retribution. I really think she is a true blonde after hearing this though.

Lemme guess . . . Congressman Anthony Weiner took some photos of himself in the shower when he played hockey for SUNY Plattsburgh back in the 1970s?
