Margaret Thatcher (they hated Lady Thatcher too Sarah)
Margaret Thatcher Foundation ^ | 1925- | Margaret Thatcher Foundation

Posted on 06/08/2011 12:36:14 PM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

Margaret Thatcher's political career has been one of the most remarkable of modern times. Born in October 1925 at Grantham, a small market town in eastern England, she rose to become the first (and for two decades the only) woman to lead a major Western democracy. She won three successive General Elections and served as British Prime Minister for more than eleven years (1979-90), a record unmatched in the twentieth century.

During her term of office she reshaped almost every aspect of British politics, reviving the economy, reforming outdated institutions, and reinvigorating the nation's foreign policy. She challenged and did much to overturn the psychology of decline which had become rooted in Britain since the Second World War, pursuing national recovery with striking energy and determination.

In the process, Margaret Thatcher became one of the founders, with Ronald Reagan, of a school of conservative conviction politics, which has had a powerful and enduring impact on politics in Britain and the United States and earned her a higher international profile than any British politician since Winston Churchill.

By successfully shifting British economic and foreign policy to the right, her governments helped to encourage wider international trends which broadened and deepened during the 1980s and 1990s, as the end of the Cold War, the spread of democracy, and the growth of free markets strengthened political and economic freedom in every continent.

For the last quarter century Margaret Thatcher has been one of the world's most influential and respected political leaders, as well as one of the most controversial, dynamic, and plain-spoken.

I am sorry but you don’t know your history. Mrs Thatcher (as she was then) was derided as minister of education in Ted Heath’s government; “Thatcher the milk snatcher” she was called by the liberal media and the opposition. She later wrot that she learnt an important lesson: “I had incurred the maximum of political odium for the minimum of political benefit.”

There were other times when she wasn’t pitch perfect in interviews; no one is born an expert. Later on, however, when she had developed into a world leader no journalist ever came close to best her.

.....I really wish Sarah was more like Margaret in the second area.

I guess she's more like Reagan in that area.

The key to Thatcher was political courage. Do I have to say anything else?

you think of that comment and then combine this comment for the left.

the definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over expecting a different results.

so they keep trying their socialism and communism and then expect a different result and that result is might work one day.

It never does but as long as they can control the schools and media like the NAZIS did then they will always have a new generation to experiment on.

“Courage and Wisdom”

Qualities Rep Weiner would benefit from but never will.

Elites “know” they are smarter and they “know” the best way to control the population and keep it working for their greater good. Individuals have no importance in their thinking. They have to deceive to lead us to this utopia (a place that does not exist).

I agree, Palin is no Thatcher. It might be impossible to find someone comparable to Thatcher who is interested in running for President.

The same vicious assault American leftists did on Reagan, British lefties, including many actors and musicians, did the same to Thatcher. There was some movie made in the eighties featuring Steven Tompkinson as a coal miner who lost his job because Thatcher closed down some unproductive mines. During one scene, he asked God to kill Thatcher.

I remember watching an episode of "Cracker" where Robbie Coltrane's character blamed some youth's delinquency problems on "Thatcherism." I just about threw a brick through my tv screen. And lost all respect for Coltrane. Especially after he did another Cracker during the Iraq War which was basically an attack of George Bush. Brit lefty celebs are just as nutty or more than American leftist celebs.

When Palin was selected by McCain to be his running mate, she had not planned on any sort of national campaign. So naturally, like most other govs, she was not fully prepared for everything. Nobody can know all the details of what’s needed to know unless they’ve had at least a year of practicing for it. She didn’t have that luxury. If she announces for the presidency and cannot answer questions during the debates next year, that’s another matter. I would bet she will have all the answers at the debates.

A lot is made of Maggie Thatcher being the first (and so far only) woman ever to be Prime Minister of Great Britain, but there is one other little first that is rarely mentioned. She was also the first (and so far only) Prime Minister with a Science degree.

Every other PM has had degrees in the Humanities (Gordon Brown) or Law (Tony Blair), or hasn't had a degree at all (John Major).

I don’t know how anyone can compare the two. Margaret Thatcher would never have said “golly gee” or “you betcha”, nor would she be stumped by a question from the dimwit Katie Couric, nor would she have lowered herself to respond to snarky remarks - especially not with juvenile comebacks.

Margaret Thatcher is a sophisticated, dignified, tough lady. SP is a lightweight, and I fail to see why people are so enthralled with her. If she can’t even answer a simple question about who her favorite founding father was, how is she going to survive on the campaign trail?

The Left will stoop to nothing to keep their agenda in place.
They’re vicious, lying thugs who want to put and keep people under their rule.

Great point.

The Left works hard to define those who are so affective against them.

Exactly - I agree fully with your post. Let the contenders debate and then we'll see. (If she decides to run I too think she will have the best answers both in GOP debates and in the debates with Obama!!)

no, her thoughts on the 2A are very clear and I’m voting for her in the primary. maggie thatcher however, did tell me to turn them in in 1988 following the hungerford massacre. I kind of lost interest in her after that.

If she can’t even answer a simple question about who her favorite founding father was...

No, that was really, really stupid. Everyone knows that Lincoln wasn't one of the Founding Father....oh no, that wasn't Sarah Palin who said that, was it?

Who did she chose? FDR? Mentioning his televised speech to the nation as he ascended the presidency in 1932? No, that wasn't she either.

Hmm, so who did she chose, and why did she chose him? George Washington was her choice; the reluctant statesman; the man who had rather wanted to live a quiet life, but who was called by the Nation. The man who willingly resigned the reins of power rather than having to be forced from the "throne". Quite an interesting choice, and a very interesting reason for chosing him as her favourite Founding Father, wasn't it?

The Baronness is British. Governor Palin is American. Two countries separated by a common language.

I’m voting for an American, not a Brit. You betcha!

This is the key:

“In the process, Margaret Thatcher became one of the founders, with Ronald Reagan, of a school of conservative conviction politics, which has had a powerful and enduring impact on politics in Britain and the United States...”

We’re building on that foundation, but we have too many who want instant gratification. It doesn’t work that way.

In November 2010, we elected more than 700 patriots to state legislatures. The fruit of that planting is seen in all the brushfires set by state legislatures these past 6 months.

We’re not going to roll back 100 years of fascist Marxism in 6 months. It takes patience, planning, organizing and finding leadership to conquer tyranny.

And you, Cincinatus’ Wife, are part of that slow but inexorable evolution back towards freedom. Your posts are excellent. I got your point, back or flank, wherever you need me.

You can fight like a girl - a T-shirt I’m starting see young ladies wear - and I’ll back these women.

Semper Fi.
