GM CEO: Customers Don't Pay High Enough Gas Tax
Michigan Capitol Confidential ^ | 6/8/2011 | Tom Gantert

Posted on 06/08/2011 1:37:07 PM PDT by MichCapCon

It appears peculiar that a company would demand that government do something that hurts its customers. But that’s what many limited-government policy experts are saying after General Motors CEO Dan Akerson told the Detroit News that he wants to see the federal government raise its gas tax by as much as $1 per gallon. Akerson told the Detroit News that he’d like to see the federal gas tax hiked to get customers to be more receptive to smaller more fuel-efficient vehicles.

According to the Detroit News: “A government-imposed tax hike, Akerson believes, will prompt more people to buy small cars and do more good for the environment than forcing automakers to comply with higher gas-mileage standards.”

Akerson’s comments highlight a conflict of interest between General Motors’ ability to please customers and the federal government, which bailed it out and still owns 26 percent of the company, according to Sam Kazman, general counsel for the Competitive Enterprise Institute.

“It’s crazy to see industry serving government rather than serving the public,” Kazman said. “Carmakers are calling for an increase in the cost of the things that drive their product – gasoline. That suggests there is something really wrong with the world.”

If this guy would be completely honest he’d say he wants higher gas prices but he wants the government to pay for all the gas for those who live in Detroit.

I bought a new car in the last 2 years, and specifically avoided GM and Chrysler. When talking about my purchase with typically curious friends, relatives, coworkers, I was sure to tell them exactly why I did not consider GM or Chrysler. I am running my own boycott. I estimate I got my message out to 20-25 people. If everyone would do that, the whole country would know it in a very short time.

"What's good for General Motors is good for the country."

That used to be considered condemnatory by the Leftwingtards. Now its their mantra.

Last week the wife and I purchased an Enclave. Does Akerson want us to take the car back? Maybe we should do that, and let the workers who made the Enclave know we were just doing what their boss advised us to do.

Let me get this straight, the non-governmental CEO of Government Motors (not Obama) wants to raise gas taxes $1 so that the public will be forced to buy Government Motors low end POS cars. Let’s see $40,000 for the Dolt or $22,000 and up for the $12,000 Cavalier/Cobalt replacement Cruze.

Apparantly he thinks GM can survive selling cars only to left-wingers, at least in the American market.

I was literally hours from selling my '08 Mustang Bullitt (#2033) in favor of a more economical and practical Chevy Equinox.

After this - never in a MILLION years will I buy a Government Motors car again. I'll ride the damn bus first.

I particularly loathe Chryslers ‘Union Thug’ commercials.(I am a former Chrysler loyalty buyer....and what they have done sickens me...)

I will buy Ford till the gummint and the unions are no longer in any way shape or form in the ownership of GM or Chrysler.

What dan is actually saying is, “Due to my failed marxist roots and the communist president that hand picked me as ceo for this Nationalized company... we at government motors have started building electric cars... and we are so heavily invested in this pos car that no one wants... that we need to get the price of gas so high that you friggin’ rubes in rubeville will buy our turd named the volt”.
