SWAT team launch dawn raid on family home to collect unpaid student loans [O's Dept of Education]
The Daily Mail ^ | June 8, 2011

Posted on 06/08/2011 4:35:31 PM PDT by grundle

A father was dragged from his home and handcuffed in front of his children by a SWAT team looking for his estranged wife - to collect her unpaid student loans.

A stunned Kenneth Wright had his front door kicked in by the raiding party at 6 am yesterday before being dragged onto his front porch, handcuffed and led to a police car with his three children.

He says he was then detained for six hours while officers looked for his wife - who no longer lives at the house.

Mr Wright was later told by Stockton police that the order to send in the SWAT team came from The U.S. Department of Education who were looking for his estranged wife to collect defaulted loan payments.

Speaking to ABC News 10, a visibly shaken Mr Wright described what happened when he was woken by a banging on his front door.

He said: 'I look out of my window and I see 15 police officers.

Dressed in his boxer shorts, Mr Wright says he rushed downstairs and was about to open the door when it was kicked open.

An officer then grabbed him by the neck before dragging him out onto the front lawn.

His 3, 7, and 11-year-old children were also removed by officers and put in a waiting police car.

'He had his knee on my back and I had no idea why they were there,' Mr Wright said.

'They put me in handcuffs in that hot patrol car for six hours, traumatising my kids.'

Mr Wrights three children, who were also led to the car with him

So what were they going to do with her? Put her in jail for not paying back the loan?

I have to wonder about the mentality of those “officers”.

In another place and time, they’d have been pushing people into cattle cars. Just following orders you know.

I looked up the how/when/why of this....the law establishing the Dept of Education was ammended in 2002, to allow their Inspector General Division to carry weapons....

...2002.

All of our ruling class are slowly and quietly stealing our liberty.

Why didn’t the alleged libertarians in congress squawk about this?

Probably it was tacked onto something, and nobody even read the bill.

When you take a loan from the mob, best pay it off, or your family might get roughed up. Oh wait, this is about the government. What was the difference again?

Just think if the guy had a menacing golf club or even a firearm (safety on) in hand. That guy would have been been Guerenaed! And all because of a unpaid loan!

Is this the New Mob? Pay up buddy or we’ll send MIBs to take your @$$ out!

A debt is a civil matter - you sue in courts to collect. This is the DOE making an “example” of what they will do. In the end, taxpayer dollars will go to settle the law suit against DOE, but thousands of borrowers will remember the incident and start paying...The time has come to shoot back. Arm yourselves, your families. Teach your children how to shoot and instruct them to do so when someone breaks down the door. The British did this kind of crap in 1775, and we had the courage then to shoot back...Do we have the courage now? “As for me, give me liberty or give me death.” Go to Richmond and stand in the church yard where Patrick Henry spoke those words...I did.

The same jackasses who want to educate illegals for free want to use SWAT teams to arrest US citizens who don’t pay their student loans? Remember the left’s hand wringing that Reagan was going to usher in a 1984 style society?

We are a police state and its going to be a bumpy ride.

My husband's cousin worked in a division that processed background checks for people in gov't to grant them firearm status. I was shocked to learn that practically every department in our government has license to carry and to used armed force.

I knew after that we as a country were in real trouble, that the second amendment is really our most important, and that I'd better get in there and be a Tea Party member to throw the bums out and try to eliminate useless gov't agencies.

And what would have been the least bit wrong about resisting this latest act of tyranny?

“He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance.”

Seems to me we fought a war against Britain over this kind of horsesh*t only to be dealing with it from our own government now?

You say: “So what were they going to do with her? Put her in jail for not paying back the loan?”

If she were lucky - lucky they didn't shoot her on sight.

Now that the gov’t has taken over all student loans, it's now been classified, instead of a ‘default” - embezzlement and/or fraud and is listed in with everything else - under Homeland Security.

It's time to reevaluate how you get your/your children's education. Student loans payments kick in upon graduation, but you may not find a job for some time - or you may do fine for a few years, then have a loss of job or an illness and miss some payments - the gov’t doesn't care - you are a criminal.

There are now ways to get an education/profession and have no loans. Indeed, to be making a living WHILE getting your education. You may miss ‘the college experience” - i.e., partying. boozing, spring breaks...but you will LIVE FREE.

Stockton, Peoples Democratic Republic of California, one of the most depressed cities in the united states with a large minority population and few jobs.

The useful idiot Obama voters were promised "help" from the socialists, and this is it.

Stockton will be the second CA city to go bankrupt behind Vallejo, and this is the "respect" the citizens there should expect from their beloved Marxists, 'cause it's what they'll get as they're bled dry.

The Dept of Ed issued a statement today that this was not about defaulted student loans. It was a criminal investigation. They won’t say what about, but it likely had to do with fraud or embezzlement.

That’s not to say that this guy shouldn’t be pissed, or that it wasn’t a complete overreaction. But it’s not about unpaid student loans, apparently.

“Did you really think we want those laws observed?” said Dr. Ferris. “We want them to be broken. You’d better get it straight that it’s not a bunch of boy scouts you’re up against... We’re after power and we mean it... There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What’s there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced or objectively interpreted – and you create a nation of law-breakers – and then you cash in on guilt. Now that’s the system, Mr. Reardon, that’s the game, and once you understand it, you’ll be much easier to deal with.”

The point of the Department of Education is indoctrination of the citizenry.

The point of SWAT teams in “Police State USA” is the fearful compliance of law-abiding citizens with complete state rule.

Why would anyone be surprised that a federal department, even the Department of Education, has SWAT teams kicking in doors at 6am? WAKE UP! The path of this government is inexorable and undeniable — total power, total control.

EVERY SINGLE LAW, RULE, REGULATION OF EVERY DEPARTMENT, BUREAU, AGENCY IS ULTIMATELY ENFORCED AT GUNPOINT.

“Why did it fall overboard?”

I know you were asking Basil, but allow me to butt in:

Strangely, this has happened to many of us who had guns. Some of us lost our entire collections in boating accidents.

Quite often a boat will capsize while all the guns are on board and you know how it is when heavy steel objects fall in the water...straight down they go.

NOT uncommon at all.

But you shouldn’t ask questions about it.

Hot Air Update:

Update: The television station that first reported this has updated their story to note that it wasn’t a SWAT team, but the federal Office of the Inspector General (OIG). The OIG disputes that the issue was a default, but refuses to explain further:

"A U.S. government official confirmed for News10 Wednesday morning federal agents with the Office of the Inspector General (OIG), not local S.W.A.T., served the search warrant. The official would not say specifically why the raid took place. He did say the search was not related to student loans in default.

He went on to say OIG is a semi-independent branch of the U.S. Department of Education that executes warrants for criminal offenses such as student aid fraud and embezzlement of federal aid."

Er … that’s not much of an improvement. Armed federal officers broke into a house and placed themselves and the occupants at risk for a potential case of fraud or embezzlement? For someone who no longer lives there? I’ve changed the headline to reflect the changes in the original reporting, but this does nothing to change the ridiculous nature of this intrusion into a private home.
