U.S. Is Intensifying a Secret Campaign of Yemen Airstrikes
nytimes.com ^ | June 8, 2011 | Mark Mazzetti

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration has intensified the American covert war in Yemen, exploiting a growing power vacuum in the country to strike at militant suspects with armed drones and fighter jets, according to American officials.

The acceleration of the American campaign in recent weeks comes amid a violent conflict in Yemen that has left the government in Sana, a United States ally, struggling to cling to power. Yemeni troops that had been battling militants linked to Al Qaeda in the south have been pulled back to the capital, and American officials see the strikes as one of the few options to keep the militants from consolidating power.

On Friday, American jets killed Abu Ali al-Harithi, a midlevel Qaeda operative, and several other militant suspects in a strike in southern Yemen. According to witnesses, four civilians were also killed in the airstrike. Weeks earlier, drone aircraft fired missiles aimed at Anwar al-Awlaki, the radical American-born cleric who the United States government has tried to kill for more than a year. Mr. Awlaki survived.

The recent operations come after a nearly year-long pause in American airstrikes, which were halted amid concerns that poor intelligence had led to bungled missions and civilian deaths that were undercutting the goals of the secret campaign.

So we are aiding the rebels in Libya, and bombing the piss out of the rebels in Yemen...

So when do the “secret” airstrikes start in Syria, and against whom...???

This is never going to stop. It's not the 60’s/70’s anymore. Perpetual war abroad and the police state at home keep the yahoos happy, so neither party will stop it.

We used to have a nice republic.

I’ve said it before. He’s trying the FDR route of getting his 2nd term like FDR got his 3rd. War. Can’t change the head of state, wouldn’t be wise. And there’d be a thousand rino’s to back him up. I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see us go into Paki and/or Iran. Haven’t you noticed Iran’s nuclear threat is much more in the news lately and we’re droning on in Paki no matter their comments. Maybe a double-header. That’s the ticket.

When we get a brave enough conservative he will go on TV and ask why Obama has started a fourth war in Yemen and why the anti-war oh I mean the anti-Bush protestors aren’t out in force anymore and will he give back that damned Peace prize before he gets us all killed.....

We have a war criminal in the White House. Not the rhetorical type that Code-Pink dreams up because official policy doesn’t square with their world view, but the real deal. There is already ample reason to impeach, convict, and relieve him of office at the very least. The only thing missing, albeit an important thing, are the congressional votes.

That's five by my count, two which he inherited, and three which he has started on his own.

Last year, historical perspective.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34774123

http://www.reuters.com/article/2010/01/10/us-yemen-usa-troops-idUSTRE6091T820100110

US Hopes to Establish Bases as Yemen Fight Escalates
http://news.antiwar.com/2010/11/15/us-hopes-to-establish-bases-as-yemen-fight-escalates/

But the deployment of US military “advisors” in a nation ahead of an eventual full scale military operation is nothing new, and while officials are still keeping their exact strategy somewhat vague it appears clear that the Obama Administration is escalating to what could only be called a war-like posture in Yemen.

Current:
Pentagon: ‘No Proof’ US-Trained Troops Involved in Yemen’s Protest Attacks http://news.antiwar.com/2011/06/03/pentagon-no-proof-us-trained-troops-involved-in-yemens-protest-attacks/

Of course the US complicity in crackdowns by their client states has already been well documented in places like Bahrain, where US-made tanks rolled into the capital city of Manama to attack Shi’ite demonstrators. And of course this is also the case in Iraq, where US-created forces have engaged in a brutal, if not heavily-publicized, crackdown on protests.

We’ve actually been involved in Yemen quite some time, as well as we’re back in Somalia too. Al-queda forward operating bases.

As more of the involvements ranging from advisers to training to boots on the ground, it is becoming immanently clear 0bama is trying to destabilize the entire region.

The question becomes...what is the end game?

Teams of American military and intelligence operatives have a command post in Sana, the Yemeni capital, to track intelligence about militants in Yemen and plot future strikes.

Above from the NYT article, first I've heard of any of it!
