A former Secret Service agent prepared to put his life on the line to protect Barack Obama has quit to stand as a Republican against the U.S. president's Democratic Party.
Daniel Bongino has caused eyebrows to be raised in the famously private and apolitical agency with his bid to represent Maryland in the Senate.
After spending 12 years protecting presidents, candidates, and world leaders, including George W Bush, he shadowed Mr Obama for nearly two years and was frequently by his side as the president met the public. He was also the lead agent co-ordinating Mr Obama's trips to Prague, Jakarta and Afghanistan.
Guarding U.S. presidents is regarded as the highest honour in the Secret Service, and agents are trained to throw themselves between a gunman and the president in any assassination attempt.
It is exceptionally rare for a member of the agency to follow a political career.
Mr Bongino, who was brought up in New York, is a conservative, Tea Party type of Republican. He resigned five months ago and now aims to capture a Senate seat from the Democrats for the first time in Maryland since 1987.
He said that his only differences with the president were ideological.
"I just don't agree with the way the country is going. We have got to get government out of the way," he said, adding that the president had always treated him well. The Secret Service declined to comment.
He was on Fox News about a week ago - very impressive. Thoughtful, apparently intelligent (other than any judgement about running as a Republican in Maryland), either courageous or stupid (since he was in the Secret Service I’ll vote for courageous), seems to care deeply about the country - in some ways a less-charismatic, lower-key version of Palin: able to talk to non-politicians without talking down to them and a common-sense, no nonsense kind of guy. He’ll get money from me.
Loved that quote and never heard it before. How sad the Gipper must be looking down on this country from above and seeing himself proven wrong here.

I now refer to POTUS Obama as a top rated “dirt bag”!!! I won’t go into detail, but I have been begging the Democrat caucus to force him to resign or impeach him as I am convinced in my heart of heart he wishes America, the USA and all of our people, minorities included, ill will and the destruction of our great Republic. POTUS Obama has never given a hoot about private sector job growth and never will, He is both un-American and anti-American. He is going down fast now, and....if the Democrat caucus does not broom him quickly, they will go down with him!!! The handwriting is clearly on the wall for everyone with half a brain to see!!!

I hope you’re right, but I’ve spent a bit of time in Maryland. Great people in the panhandle and eastern shore, but get a little east of Frederick and on the west side of the Chesepeake Bay (where most of the population is concentrated) and it is a totally different mindset; all that seems to matter is what they can suckle off the government teat.

True! I live in western Maryland. This is gun country. Very conservative. You can tell from the signs that go up around election time. Unfortunately every vote I've made for a conservative candidate has been overruled by those who live in the eastern part of the state. Sigh...

He was interviewed on a Chicago talk radio station this morning. I agree—he sounded very impressive.
