Burzynski: Cancer Is Serious Business

This is a link to a free viewing of a very interesting documentary about a doctor in Texas who seems to have discovered an amazingly effective tool to fight cancer. I am in the middle of watching it, but just watched an undeniable Atlas Shrugged moment that moved me to post it here....

It will only be free to view until midnight tonight.

Thought provoking stuff here, and I will be interested to hear what ya'll think.

I often wonder what would happen if we found a cure for cancer and that perhaps someone may well have but was not permitted to publish or speak out because what then would the millions of people who work in this area do. We have some great medical and research minds and have poured zillions of dollars into research. There are blocks and blocks of buildings in the medical center complex in Houston for instance that are devoted to cancer treatment and research. Just rather mind boggling.

I don’t know, as I am still watching, but it is SO Atlas Shrugged : |

At the point I am at, the FDA finally agreed to “work” with him, (after failing to strip him of his license OR to put him in jail!!), but only if THEY could change all of his successful protocols! He said if they changed his protocols he told them he would not provide his medicines, and so they told him they would get it somewhere else : o (This is after researchers were sent to his practice to “observe” his procedures...)

Incredible...

: /

It is truly unbelievable.

Yes. That is the underlying thread, that the FDA has been fighting this doctor for over 30 years, in order to keep the economic peace : |

I will try to summarize this next part...

The National Cancer Institute was in charge of the clinical trials. They wanted to change the protocols, and DID so, against the doctors strong objection. The doctor was able to stop the trials, since they were not being administered correctly. The trials showed no effective treatment before they were closed, but they published the incomplete findings anyway, to discredit the doctor.

The good news was that within the findings, was the evidence of the minimal amounts of the doctor’s drug in the patients bloodwork. The bad news was that these patients did not survive. The NCI had insisted on “changing” the protocols, (in reality, lessening the amount of drug necessary), and further there is testimony from a doctor who was on staff at the NCI for 6 years...that the NCI does this to ensure that the new therapy is ineffective....

Oh my gosh.... the United States Government now holds the patent to the doctor’s drug... they named another inventor, and even used Burzynski as a “reference”...

“The invention described herein, may be manufactured, used and licensed by or of the Government, for Governmental purposes”

May God give us strength, to turn these people out.

I’ve believed for years that there is a cure for most cancers, it’s too big of a money maker in research to go public with it, or they think there would be too many people saved and the planet couldn’t support them all.

Thank you for the bump. I just finished watching it. They were never able to put the doctor in jail, or out of business, but the FDA is now using their own protocols and doing trials using “their” drug. They also are still insisting on doing the radiation treatments on the very young children,(which may well kill or cripple the child before they even begin the trial of the new drug), before they begin the next level of trials, which interestingly enough, they are having trouble getting the funding for....

This doctor should have left the US & started manufacturing/using the drug in some sane country that isn’t beholden to the US. Maybe he should give the information to China. Anything to get it out there, if it’s for real.

You apparently are a very wise person, because the documentary makes an excellent case for your thoughts.

It was incredible to watch how this man was not only doing nothing wrong, but was in fact saving people’s lives, and yet he was hounded for YEARS, by every level of government.

And further, that the government now “owns” his invention, and yet they Still are dragging their feet on getting it out into the market place : o

Truly frightening.

When I first went into nursing, I was an oncology nurse. Never saw anyone cured....I was continually heartbroken over the deaths of people I had taken care of for weeks to months at a time. And the side effects of the chemotherapeutic drugs were horrific.

I, too, feel that our government is suppressing any release of a cancer cure. One reason, I think, is that they feel a reduction in our population would be a good thing. And this would fit right in with obamacare - wouldn't want to waste resources on people who can't be cured.

My mom has glioblastoma multiforme and we looked into Dr. Burzynski. I did a lot of research. There is no way I would let my mom or any other love one get treated by him.

There are many many people out there willing to fleece cancer patients. Dr. Burzynski isn't a complete quack (he not only treats his patients with his miracle “cure” but he also uses cutting edge chemotherapy). Maybe he even believes his own hype. However, there are HUGE ethical problems with how he operates. You don't here about the many people he has taken for everything they are worth before they died because, well, they aren't around to complain.

If you are a cancer patient you should go look at one of the big research centers like MD Anderson or Duke. Not some guy operating out of a strip mall in Katy, TX. 1. He doesn't tell patients that if he treats them that makes them ineligible for other major medical research studies. He doesn't explain their other options, and by his actions removes these options for them. For instance, there are some very promising cancer vaccines but you can't take them if you have been treated by Dr. Burzynski. Depending on your cancer you will want to get into a phase II study with Avastin (Bevacizumab), XL184, BSI-201, dasatanib, dasatanib/erlotinib combo, tandutinib, vaccine therapy, etc. Dr. Burzynski knowingly removes these options for people.

2. He talks as if all these other cancer researchers want patients to die. “They” want to have to radiate little kids. “They” want them to have to take harmful chemo pills. I know MANY people in the field personally and professionally and they have dedicated their lives to helping people.

3. There are NO randomized studies that show his methods are effective. The patients that he has that recover are *also treated with a standard regimen*. He cherry picks the good cases to report as anecdotal evidence. He has had 30+ years to show success with randomized, research studies. I think the problem is he can't because it doesn't really work better than placebo. He has treated thousands of patients. With glioblastoma some small percentage (50 a year?) are cured. We don't know why or how. But I can make any treatment look good by random chance because of that fact.

4. His “antineoplastons” are distillates of human urine. They are just short protein / amino acid chain. He decided this was the “cure” to cancer 30 years ago and hasn't really changed his approach since then as far as I can tell. Nothing he is doing is a big secret. This conspiracy crap is absurd, there is HUGE money to be made in curing cancer and this research has been public knowledge for 30 years. If it worked we would know about it.

5. His PhD is very questionable... first of all, it really is a “D.Msc” - as far as I can tell is short for “Doctorate of Metaphysics”. I originally assumed it was “Doctorate of Medical Science”, BUT, I have found no one using “D.Msc” for that and people using it for Metaphysics. Maybe he wants us to assume that? I have no idea what school it is from. At any rate, his M.D. was in 1967. His “PhD” is from 1968 - and by his own admission he did no independent research while in Medical School. I know some M.D. / PhDs. They did 6-7 years of research *independently* from their M.D. for their PhD. I think his claiming a PdH is baloney. He claims he is singled out for persecution and that these other doctors are all in bed with the big pharmaceuticals, blah blah blah. Well, maybe if you stopped lying about your education...

6. There are some scary stuff in the published results of his patients. His treatment itself can be harmful. In one study I looked at 1.5% of patients died from elevated levels of blood sodium!?! (They “didn't follow his recommended fluid intake instructions”?)

Agreed. In my pre-Mom life, I was an X-Ray Tech. The oncology wards and radiation rotations were indeed heartbreaking, but the people I met there, of all ages, taught me much about the strength of the human spirit.

May God give us the strength to right this ship.

Paridel,
Thank you very much for your extensive reply. That is what I was looking for here, and happily, almost always find - another point of view, and usually it is well supported.

I do wonder about why it is that being treated by Dr. Burzynski disallows a patient from being treated by any one else? It is unconscionable that the medical establishment would in any sense , punish a patient for trying something in such a life ending scenario. It would seem that, in my view, that some one is may still be trying to put this doctor out of business. Interesting too, since they have patented his procedures? (Question mark since all I know is what I learned in the documentary).

Again, thank you for your response, and I pray that you and your mom can find an effective treatment that will help her, and soon.

May God bless.
Tatt

Tatt,

Thank you for the kind words for my mom. It is an ugly decease, but it is remarkable the outpouring of support that my parents have received and her spirits are still high.

Different treatment plans may interact badly with each other. Unfortunately, most cancer treatments are very invasive. Sometimes it isn't safe for the patient to pursue multiple treatments at once, and in other cases one treatment will prevent the other from working properly. For instance, my understanding is that some of the newer vaccines can't function if you still have avastin in your system, so you have to wait a number of weeks for the avastin to clear out before you can take them. That isn't punishing people for taking Avastin, it is just the physical reality of the treatments.

It isn't that they are punishing Dr. Burzynski’s patients, most of the time when you pick a treatment regimen it rules out other treatments for quite some time. I think it is very important for doctors to explain all these options to you: you can do surgery and then chemo, or you can do radiation but then that rules out surgery, etc. (These are all hypothetical, it clearly depends on the individual patient). Once you pick the treatment you may have to stick with and forgo other options, which is why patients deserve to have all the facts. And since he simultaneously treats patients with more conventional approaches it does reduce their options quite a bit.

Rick

Thank you for your detailed “rebuttal” to the film. It always helps to hear both sides of an issue.

When trying to evaluate a technical issue like this, we laymen need to fall back on the style of the arguments being made as much as the technical details that we have a limited capability to understand.

Why attack Dr. Burzynski instead of his research? If he was indeed fleecing his patients, or lacked proper credentials to practice medicine, he would have been striped of his license long ago, given the harassment he has received from the FDA and the Texas medical Board. Why on earth does it matter if a doctor practices out of a strip mall instead of a posh building subsidized by the taxpayer? Bringing up these things dilutes your message.

What I find most compelling about the film is that the FDA agreed to go ahead with trials only after the U.S. Government had obtained patents on the treatment. It certainly smells of a conflict of interest.

Best wishes to your Mom. I hope her treatment is successful.

First, Thank you for the kind words about my mom and her treatment.

Why attack Dr. Burzynski instead of his research?

You have a point here. I probably take this a little too personally as I have enough personal experience with terminal cancer to know that people are willing to try anything and hate to think that people would take advantage of that. But at the same time he doesn't put forward enough of his research to evaluate it fully.

If you look at the linked article below maybe you can see what I mean. He shows great results from one case involving a 7 year old girl, and promises that complete results from the study will be published before the end of 2007 [1]. To my knowledge these have never been published. He seems to publish *plenty* of cherry picked cases like the one in that article, with no follow through on promises for full results.

It only matters that he operates out of a strip mall because it means he can't provide the same level of care as some of the big players. Very large hospitals from all over the country send their patients to the big cancer research centers (Duke, MD Anderson, UCLA) because the level of care and the capabilities they bring to bear on the problem is remarkable. A good example is the BrainSUITE at MD Anderson. They simply can perform surgeries and remove tumors that are impossible except there and maybe a half dozen other centers in the world. Good doctors tell you when you need to go somewhere else. Of course, where you can to go depends on the specific cancer.

As for the other "personal" attack, I think the PhD issue is very pertinent. He makes a big deal about being an MD / PhD, and yet his degree seems suspect.

You saved me the time to type up a reply. When my son was battling medulloblastoma a few years ago, I researched Burzynski’s methods extensively, and concluded it was quackery. Dangerous quackery. And believe me, we were willing to try almost anything. (In fact, we did try some things that may have been a little wacky.)

I will say a prayer for your mom - terrible disease.

As one other example, the FDA, with lots of political pressure, approved FEN-FEN, a diet drug previously known in Europe, and known to many if not all of the FDA board, to produce dreadful pulmonary hypertension and eventual painful death, or enduring heart disease in "patients". Hundreds of thousands of young people died as a direct result of using this "approved" drug.

Blood on the FDA's hands most assuredly. Folks, this agency is in the thrall of the pharmaceutical industry, and has not a whit of concern for the people, supposedly protected by its guardianship. At least as evil and rapacious as Fannie Mae, and the rest of the federal rip-offs, staffed with crooks, "serving the people."

From your Quackwatch link:

Tests of antineoplastons at the National Cancer Institute have never been positive. The drug company Sigma-Tau Pharmaceuticals could not duplicate Burzynski's claims for AS-2.1 and A-10. The Japanese National Cancer Institute has reported that antineoplastons did not work in their studies. No Burzynski coauthors have endorsed his use of antineoplastons in cancer patients.

Watch the film and you will find out why. They all lied about what they did. It is documented in their own reports, in court documents and in FDA documents. In one FDA report they categorically say that "antineoplastons are not toxic and highly effective."

I read a book about Burzynski, by a writer by the name of Thomas Elias (also went to hear him speak once). This man started his research thinking Dr. Burzynski was a quack, but changed his mind during the writing of his book.

I don't think he's a quack. I think he's a hero.

FWIW, he has actually cured brain cancers... tumors which conventional therapy hardly touches and doesn't cure.

Were I to be diagnosed with cancer, I'd rather go to an alternative doctor. At least I'd have a fighting chance.

No honest doctor would claim to cure everybody who walks through the doors to his office. But the batting average, to me, for orthodox cancer medicine isn't very good.

There is a lot of cancer in my family members. I remember that one grandmother died when I was very young. My mother and I lived, for a while, with an aunt and uncle. The uncle came down with laryngeal cancer, and I witnessed what he went through (surgery and radiation). The cancer kept recurring, and finally killed him.

THAT convinced me that there had to be something better, something less horrifying, something that wasn't worse than the disease itself. So, when I got out on my own, I looked into such alternative treatments. And there *are* things that work--but most orthodox doctors never think outside their little boxes.

There have been a number of cures for cancer....one doctor had a very simple formula. He injected it into someone with cancer...and that person was cured. 1 Injection and that was it...it was back in the 40's. Where that simple formula is today...who knows...it has either been destroyed or classified...so we have this horrible cancer industry.

I've watched Dr. Burzynski for years...and watched all he has gone through. I am glad he has made this video so another generation can see how awful the FDA is. It is shocking to them.

After viewing (well worth the 1 hour 45 minutes), 2 observations:

1. How sad that some patients could receive life-saving cure years ago—in the 80s, yet not today.

2. Looks like they wanted to lock up the process and treatments with patents so no one could compete with the standard chemo and radiation.

“”Different treatment plans may interact badly with each other. Unfortunately, most cancer treatments are very invasive. Sometimes it isn’t safe for the patient to pursue multiple treatments at once, and in other cases one treatment will prevent the other from working properly.””

Understood, but what I also took from the film was that a large part of the beauty of Burzynski’s treatment, was that it was not harmful/invasive/stressful on the body in general terms and had few side effects. Of course, this is not taking into account the deaths you found in your research, to high sodium levels, that were not noted in the film.

It is disheartening and frustrating if the doctor, like the film maker, is hesitant to simply present ALL of the facts and then to allow the individual to decide. After all, that is what I found to be the most troubling aspect in the film, and in our situation with government and the media today - that not only do few seem to want to provide all that any of us truly require, which is as complete an understanding of the facts as possible, and then as individuals, we can decide what we want to do on our own, but that further - many are actively working to KEEP important facts from us...

Again, thank you much for the frank discussion, and please know that both you and your Mom are in my prayers, FRiend.

May God bless.

I always wondered how it is that so many questionable products could have FDA approval, and yet things like elderberry juice and raw milk require raids from the authorities : /

Learning about the “user fees” paid to the FDA from the companies certainly explained a lot, and sadly, it does always seem to get back around to following the money, and controlling people.

May God bless.

Hello PhatHead, who I believe will always be a regular on my prayer list, small smile. As for the wacky stuff - well, my FRiend, we all do what whatever we can, and what we must, praying all along.

Thank you much for the input on Dr. Burzynski. For me, the most troubling aspects from the film were the hows and whys of the government’s interventions and actions. It was a strange progression from seeming to care not a whit about what the doctor was doing, to trying to shut him down, to working “with” him, and then to patenting their own versions of his “product”... It just doesn’t look too good from this old Constitutionalist’s viewpoint : |

May God be with you and yours.
