Skip to comments.Obama bullies Israel; so much for promises at AIPAC

Since the presidents Arab Spring speech, friends of Israel have been nervous about at least two issues: the promise Israel would not have to sit down with those who seek its destruction and the negotiations based on the 1967 borders with land swaps. This weekend it became apparent that there is much to worry about and that the Obama administration has been playing a game usually practiced by the Palestinians, namely telling its domestic audience one thing and the negotiating parties something different.
The trouble for the administration began on Friday afternoon when Eli Lake published a story for the Washington Times.
The White House is pressing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to publicly adopt President Obamas view that Israels pre-1967 border should be the basis for future peace talks.
The Obama White House appealed to Jewish leaders on Friday that the request of Israel was part of an effort to head off Palestinian plans to declare an independent state at the United Nations in September.
The request of Mr. Netanyahu was made Monday to the prime ministers top peace negotiator, Yitzhak Molcho, at a meeting with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at the National Security Council, according to an Israeli diplomat based in Jerusalem.
Lake also wrote:
Steven Simon, the new White House National Security Council senior director for the Middle East and North Africa, told representatives of the Jewish Community Friday during a conference call that the White House was looking to get both the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli government to adopt Mr. Obamas principles as a basis for negotiation, according to a recording of the call played for the Washington Times.
Mr. Obamas position is the borders of Israel and Palestine should be based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps.

The only thing surprising is that the story was actually printed in the Washington Post.
I hope America and Israel can survive until 2012, and that we can have honest elections. The ‘I won’ has to go.
I hope the voters that support Israel wake up to this instead of listen to his lip service..actions speak louder then words
Liar like a muslim and a croock together !
That’s what is obHamas !
Don’t miss him, like McCain did, next time .
He must be called as he deserves
Arab Spring???? How about calling it what it is - Muzzie terrorist thug uprisings - aided and abetted by the Muzzie Mickey from Nairobi. Among the lot, the ‘Arab Spring’ in Egypt must be having the worst consequences for us and Israel - otherwise how to explain the total lack of coverage from that front?
How would these “swaps” work? Would they be 1 for 1, or would it be possible for a bigger area to be swapped for a smaller area?
I wonder if Obama’s ultimate goal here is to give Jerusalem to the Palestinians. That’s based on nothing except that I could imagine Obama taking Jerusalem from the Judeo-Christian world and handing it to the Muslim world out of a sense of cosmic justice mixed with pure spite. The “swap” might be Jerusalem for defensible borders. I don’t think Obama wants Israel to cease to exist. I think he wants it to exist with its heart torn out.
When the political winds turn ugly, barak will stand with islam. One of the few times he told the truth and is sticking with it.
but he’s not a muslim.
“....the White House was looking to get both the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli government to adopt Mr. Obamas principles as a basis for negotiation, ...”
This arrogant little man has no principles.
I saw a comment to a similar article where the poster wrote, “The USA should go back to 1959 borders so Hawaii isn’t a state.”
It’s very surprising indeed.
Jennifer Rubin is the voice from the Right permitted by the WaPo. She is very good, and this article deserves wide dissemination. This administration effort to use the 67 boundaries of Israel as a starting point for negotiations is bound to create a firestorm in the Jewish community.
Obama’s pique at having been lectured by Netanyahu.
Americas current “Cold War” is against Islam.
The problem is that the elected officials do NOT want us to protest or argue about accepting Islam into the infrastructures.
This is our “Behind every blade of grass” moment.
Nice catch, excellent article.
Very surprising it came from WashPost.
“The Obama White House appealed to Jewish leaders on Friday that the request of Israel was part of an effort to head off Palestinian plans to declare an independent state at the United Nations in September...”
This is ridiculous. All the US has to do is veto the deal. Obama just wants to vote ‘present’.
ACT LIKE A MAN OBAMA!
