~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Happy Flag Day!

Happy Birthday United States Army!

The Fourth of July is traditionally celebrated as America's birthday, but the idea of an annual day specifically celebrating the Flag is believed to have first originated in 1885. BJ Cigrand, a schoolteacher, arranged for the pupils in the Fredonia, Wisconsin Public School, District 6, to observe June 14 (the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes) as 'Flag Birthday'.

In numerous magazines and newspaper articles and public addresses over the following years, Cigrand continued to enthusiastically advocate the observance of June 14 as 'Flag Birthday', or 'Flag Day'.

In 1894, the governor of New York directed that on June 14 the Flag be displayed on all public buildings. With BJ Cigrand and Leroy Van Horn as the moving spirits, the Illinois organization, known as the American Flag Day Association, was organized for the purpose of promoting the holding of Flag Day exercises.

On June 14th, 1894, under the auspices of this association, the first general public school children's celebration of Flag Day in Chicago was held in Douglas, Garfield, Humboldt, Lincoln, and Washington Parks, with more than 300,000 children participating.

Adults, too, participated in patriotic programs. Franklin K. Lane, Secretary of the Interior, delivered a 1914 Flag Day address in which he repeated words he said the flag had spoken to him that morning: "I am what you make me; nothing more. I swing before your eyes as a bright gleam of color, a symbol of yourself."

Inspired by these three decades of state and local celebrations, Flag Day - the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777 - was officially established by the Proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson on May 30th, 1916. While Flag Day was celebrated in various communities for years after Wilson's proclamation, it was not until August 3rd, 1949, that President Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.

"There's A Star Spangled Banner Waving Somewhere"
(click for YouTube)

FIRST COUNTRY MUSIC GOLD RECORD

Recorded by Elton Britt on March 19, 1942.

"The song seemed to fit America's wartime mood perfectly.
It was arguably the most played song of 1943;
and it brought Britt a gold record in 1944, the first awarded to a country artist."

Lyrics:

There's a star spangled banner waving somewhere
In a distant land so many miles away
Only Uncle Sam's great heroes get to go there
Where I wish that I could also live some day

I'd see Lincoln, Custer, Washington and Perry
Nathan Hale and Colin Kelly too
There's a star spangled banner waving somewhere
Waving o'er the land of heroes brave and true

In this war with its mad schemes of destruction
Of our country fair and our sweet liberty
By the mad dictators, leaders of corruption
Can't the U.S. use a mountain boy like me?

God gave me the right to be a free American
For that precious Right I'd gladly die
There's a star spangled banner waving somewhere
That is where I want to live when I die

Though I realize I'm crippled, that is true, sir
Please don't judge my courage by my twisted leg
Let me show my Uncle Sam what I can do, sir
Let me help to bring the Axis down a peg

If I do some great deed I will be a hero
And a hero brave is what I want to be
There's a star spangled banner waving somewhere
In that heaven there should be a place for me
.

Under God
June 14, 2011

Every parent knows the difference between rules designed primarily for the benefit of the parent and those designed for the benefit of the child. God’s rules fall into the latter category. As Creator of the human race, God knows how human society will work best.

I began to look at the Ten Commandments in this light—as rules designed primarily for our benefit. Jesus underscored this principle when He said, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath” (Mark 2:27).

The Bible is a most realistic book. It assumes human beings will be tempted to lust after a neighbor or covet someone else’s property, to work too hard, to strike out in anger at those who wrong them. It assumes humanity will bring disorder to whatever we touch. Each of the Ten Commandments offers a shield of protection against that disorder. We have the freedom to say no to our sinful inclinations. By doing so, we avoid certain harm.

Taken together, the Ten Commandments weave life on this planet into a more meaningful and structured whole, the benefit of which is to allow us to live as a peaceful, healthy community under God.

When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey. —Sammis

Oh, that my ways were directed to keep Your statutes! Then I would not be ashamed. —Psalm 119:5-6

Read: Mark 2:23-28

This is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. —1 John 5:3

STARS AND STRIPES ON IWO JIMA
(click for YouTube)

By Judy Canova and The Riders Of The Sage (1945)

LYRICS:

When the Yanks raised the Stars & Stripes on Iwo Jima Isle
Through the blood and tears they won through
Bless the heart of each Yankee there On Iwo Jima Isle
Resting 'neath a blanket of blue

High on the hill Suribachi
Flies Old Glory and she always will
When the Yanks raised the Stars & Stripes on Iwo Jima Isle
There were tears in their hearts though they smiled

When the Yanks raised the Stars & Stripes on Iwo Jima Isle
Through the blood and tears they won through
Bless the heart of each Yankee there On Iwo Jima Isle
Resting 'neath a blanket of blue

High on the hill Suribachi
Flies Old Glory and she always will
When the Yanks raised the Stars & Stripes on Iwo Jima Isle
There were tears in their hearts though they smiled

When the Yanks raised the Stars & Stripes on Iwo Jima Isle
Ev'ry heart could sing once again
And the sight of Old GLory over Iwo Jima Isle
Swelled the hearts of our fighting men

Long will it wave o'er the hilltops
As a symbol of heroes who died
When the Yanks raised the Stars & Stripes on Iwo Jima Isle
There were tears in their hearts though they smiled

Good tagline. It reminds me of this:

"Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit; Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad."
