At least three people were killed and 33 were wounded, mostly of them lightly, in a Netanya blast that officials say is apparently not a terror attack late Thursday.
A loud explosion was reported in the third floor of a building in the city, north of Tel Aviv, after midnight, with police forces and ambulances rushing to the scene. Dozens of residents may be trapped in the building, officials said.
The cause of the explosion was not immediately clear. Meanwhile, police have launched a hunt for a vehicle seen escaping the scene shortly after the blast. Large police forces were also looking into reports that two people fled the scene.
Residents in the area said that the front of the residential building collapsed. Some residents were evacuated from the scene. Officials feared that the building may completely collapse, with rescue forces working frantically to clear all residents and keep away curious passersby. ... Residents said they smelled explosive materials in the area, but officials have not discounted the possibility that the explosion was the result of a gas leak, with witnesses reporting a heavy scent of gas at the site.
