In doing my homework on Rick Perry I found this video. It’s about 30 minutes long. I watched and took notes. If you have time to watch it you will hear it complete and in context, delivered in his style and with his inflection.

My notes while watching video of speech:

Opening minutes of video is folksy fun and warm up schtick. At 4 minutes in, Rick Perry takes a nice shot at the “legacy” media then goes into his thoughts about the Constitution, the 10th Amendment and the struggle between the Right and the Left -- how the country is ready “fixin’ to” to swing back.

He addresses his talk to the conservative blogosphere:

James Madison and Thomas Jefferson would be very comfortable in this room today.

Thanks those who went to the sport shooting range a day earlier.

Reads the 10th Amendment – What a beautiful succinct, simple statement – words penned for a time such as this…… (nice list of rights being taken away and by whom).

Republicans lost because you couldn’t tell the difference between a Republican and a Democrat… (expands)

Growing mood in the country – passion across the state and when I look at Glenn Beck’s event in Washington D.C. and other events, it warms the cockles of my heart……”

Texas has led but it’s been a hell of a struggle against Washington D.C. – they must trust the people, they don’t trust the people.

Governing isn’t that hard…

First – Don’t spend all the money!

TX legislature meets 140 days every OTHER year!

TARP – Stimulus – great concern in Texas, country, world --- small businesses don’t know what shoe will fall next – what regulations – costs – job loss. Health care bill – cost – loss of access to health care…..

Second: Fair and predictable tax and regulatory policy…..

Third: Legal system that does not allow for over suing. Sweeping tort reform 2003 in TX has paid HUGE dividends. Went from Jack-pot Justice (legal hell hole) to 60% more doctors practicing in Texas from 7 years ago (expands more on this) – about access to health care.

Last step: Loser Pays tells them, you better have a case. If frivolous – fishing for settlement – they’ll foot the bill! (since this speech, Perry signed it into law)

Haley Barbour told him, If "Loser Pays" passes you can put turnstiles on the TX border and charge people to come into your state!”

THAT’S IT! Put those 4 principles into place and tell government to get the hell out of the way.

You also need to work with principled people.

Jan 2003 was first time there was Republican control of Texas and put Texas on the path that has led to the model it is today -- how you manage government to free people from legislation, litigation and regulation. Business are looking to TX (discusses Caterpillar’s move to TX. Discusses CA losing auto business to TX).

Because we’re a mobile society people can up and move and pick and choose where they want to live and work.

Why 10th Amendment so important to the people. If government continues to take our freedoms by delegating from D.C. [“this is how you’re going to get health care, educate your children, live your life”] -- then we have lost our republic and we have lost our freedom. This is worth fighting for, this is worth standing for…… This is where the rubber meets the road…

If people can risk their capital and get a return on their investment they can pay for good teachers, can pay for officers to be on the roads to protect you. You cannot have transportation infrastructure if you do not have the environment for entrepreneurs.

We are locked in a huge struggle against centralized government -- rationed opportunity, limited freedom...

Bloggers -- the firebrand to rally the people that I dare to speak to today about those who have grown drunk on power in D.C., you must remind your fellow Americans that our system gives them more power than any citizenry in the world…

It must be fought for, protected and handed on to them to do the same. We will not be the generation that let freedom slip through our fingers. ....that is a legacy we can all embrace. So let’s restore basic Constitutional values that set this Republic apart, spread the gospel of our conservative principles….

. Since Perry has been Governor of Texas, Texas has added more than 850,000 jobs, more than all other states combined. Texas has added over 180,000 jobs since August of 2009.

. There is no such thing as ‘Perrycare’

. Signed into law sonogram and explanation by physician before abortion

. Signed into law, photo ID ident to vote

. Perry did not apply for federal “Race to the Top” education funds because he said it would force national standards upon Texas.

. He has vetoed a record 248 bills, including dozens after the 2001 session, angering many lawmakers.

. He said last year that President Barack Obama was “hell-bent” on turning America into a socialist country.

. Won governorship of state with lots of latinos

. Perry has a reputation for not sweating

• He refused to raise taxes when Texas faced a record $10 billion budget shortfall in 2003. Instead, he was the first Texas governor since World War II to sign a budget that lowered state spending (and has now done it twice). As governor, Perry has used his line item veto to cut over $3 billion in proposed spending.

• In 2005, Perry signed a historic $15.7 billion property tax cut for homeowners and businesses that also included new taxpayer protections against appraisal increases. In 2009, Gov. Perry secured a tax cut for approximately 40,000 small businesses in Texas and protected the Rainy Day Fund for future challenges.

• He led the battle to pass the country’s most sweeping lawsuit reforms, closing the door on junk lawsuits that had been making trial lawyers rich while driving countless doctors either out of the state or the profession all together. Since Texas voters approved these reforms, malpractice claims and premiums have fallen and access to healthcare is increasing across the state as doctors have applied in droves to practice in Texas.

. He has never lost an election, including an elementary school contest for “king” of the Paint Creek School Carnival. He secured that win by handing out pennies for votes.

. Perry is also known for his socially conservative views on homosexuality, and he opposes same sex marriage. He condemned the United States Supreme Court decision in Lawrence vs. Texas, which struck down a Texas sodomy law. He called the law “appropriate”

. Abortion:
Perry signed into law a bill requiring a sonogram and doctor’s explanation before granting an abortion
In 2005, Perry signed a new law that requires minor girls to receive
parental consent before getting an abortion. This law strengthens a
parental notification law Perry supported as Lt. Gov. in 1999, which helped reduce teen abortions by 26 percent. Perry has also signed a ban on third trimester abortions, a ban on tax dollars being used to support abortion facilities, a prenatal protection act that protects
unborn children from assault, and an informed consent law that helps expectant mothers better understand the risks and consequences of abortion. Perry supports a ban on human cloning and will veto any legislation that provides state dollars for embryonic stem cell
research, a process that ends a human life.

Perry urges to keep up pressure to roll back the landmark 1973 Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion until “Roe v. Wade is nothing but a shameful footnote in our nation’s history books.

Perry, a frequent critic of the federal government, also bashed President Barack Obama for his administration’s policy allowing federal funding of embryonic stem cell research, saying he was deeply disturbed by studies that turn “the remains of unborn children into nothing more than raw material.”

Perry has faulted Obama for reversing the so-called “Mexico City policy” that banned giving federal money to international groups that perform abortions or provide information about abortions. Obama struck down the policy during his first week in office, saying it was too broad and undermined family planning in developing countries.
Under Obama “our federal tax dollars can now be used to fund abortion all over the world. With the stroke of a pen, abortion essentially became a U.S. foreign export,” Perry said.

. Immigration:
Perry adds immigration issues to lawmaker session
Perry wants passage of a measure requiring every person arrested to be run through the federal immigration databases as part of the Secure Communities program. He also wants to provide the state Department of Public Safety with the authority to make sure someone is in the U.S. legally before issuing a driver’s license.
These measures, along with a ban on sanctuary cities, would “provide a clear message that Texas will not turn a blind eye to those breaking our laws,” Perry said in a statement.
“Texas owes it to the brave law enforcement officials, who put their lives on the line every day to protect our families and communities, to give them the discretion they need to adequately do their jobs,” Perry said.

.Gov. Perry has made numerous requests of the federal govt. to enforce the border in Texas including handing Pre. Obama a letter in person when he landed in Dallas last year.

. Christian religious beliefs
In what was described as a “God and country” sermon at the Cornerstone church in San Antonio, attended by Perry and other mostly Republican candidates, the Rev. John Hagee stated, “If you live your life and don’t confess your sins to God Almighty through the authority of Christ and His blood, I’m going to say this very plainly, you’re going straight to hell with a nonstop ticket.” Perry was asked if he agreed with those comments and said, “It is my faith, and I’m a believer of that.”[39] Perry went on to say that there was nothing in the sermon that he took exception with. Humorist and entertainer Kinky Friedman, the Jewish independent candidate for governor in the 2006 election, said, “He doesn’t think very differently from the Taliban, does he?” Carole Keeton Strayhorn disagreed with Perry’s comments, and Democrat Chris Bell said that one who is in public office should “respect people of all faiths and denominations”. Conservatives then responded, arguing that Perry had a right to his religious beliefs, and that he was not disrespecting Americans of other religious convictions.[40] While visiting Israel in August 2009, Perry gave an interview to the Jerusalem Post in which he affirmed his support for Israel from his religious background, “I’m a big believer that this country was given to the people of Israel a long time ago, by God, and that’s ordained.”

. Environmental issues
Perry does not believe there is valid scientific proof of anthropogenic global warming. He has said several times that there is no scientific consensus on the issue.[69] In a September 7, 2007, speech to California Republicans, Perry said, “Virtually every day another scientist leaves the global warming bandwagon. ... But you won’t read about that in the press because they have already invested in one side of the story.”

. Inauguration concert controversy
Perry invited his friend, rock musician Ted Nugent, to perform at a black-tie gala hours after Perry’s second inauguration ceremony on January 16, 2007. Nugent appeared onstage during the inaugural ball wearing a cutoff T-shirt emblazoned with the Confederate flag and shouting derogatory remarks about non-English speakers, according to press reports.[79] The NAACP condemned Nugent’s flying of the Confederate flag, but he denied intentionally making any racially offensive comments and stated that the flag is a symbol of southern heritage

Misc:
. He played quarterback on the six-man football team for the Paint Creek Pirates. He also played basketball and ran track.

. He is an Eagle Scout and wrote a book about the Boy Scouts, ‘On My Honor’.
Rick Perry uses the Boy Scouts to draw a battle line in what he considers a “culture war,” defending them against the American Civil Liberties Union and what he sees as a moral struggle for the country’s future.
The book also traces a 30-year history of litigation involving the Scouts — most of which they won — which Perry considers an attack on traditional values and faith in God.

Perry targets the ACLU as the primary force behind a leftist push to accept homosexuality and challenge Scouting’s duty to God.

I have chosen my candidate and my choice has largely to do with the willingness of the candidate to fight the kind of corruption that Rick Perry brings to the table. In my opinion, Sarah Palin is the only one who hasn’t either participated in or condoned by inaction the blatant corruption that has taken over this country from the top down.

It’s a very important issue for me, as I see this nation being torn to shreds and nothing being done to stop it.

But I’m not against Rick Perry because I’m for Sarah Palin. I’m against Rick Perry based on his record and his past deeds.

If I mistook you for a Perry-pusher, I apologize. However, I do recall a rather fawning Perry piece that you posted yesterday that put you on my radar.

If you want another politician who says one thing and does another, Rick Perry is your guy. If you want government policy sold to the highest bidder, Rick Perry is your guy. I cannot and will not support that. In fact, I’ll do everything I can to fight against it.

He does have some warts, but we could do worse. He’s not perfect, but who is? I think if he were elected, he would generally remind us of Dubya. You would get your cockles raised from his border policy and maybe some smarmy business ties, but he does spew the correct rhetoric when the time comes. I will stay with the Tea Party picks we have now. Bachmann or Cain would do as well, IMHO. If the Tea Party goes with Ron Paul, they lost me. I’m afraid Perry is trying to whip up some sort of “draft Perry” thingy like the draft Christy movement. Frankly, Christy is wrong on guns, homo’s and abortion, IMO. Slapping the teacher union is a good thing, but that’s not the same as being president.

This is what keeps me coming back to Palin. She has had every statement and email scrutinized and there is no dirt. She has to be the cleanest pol on the planet. If she entered the race, I would have to even overlook Bachmann or Cain. By the time she got to the primary vote, we would even know when her period was. Most of the pols we have to choose from, we are just guessing at their character. Perry was our only real choice in Texas, so he won. That doesn't make him the savior of The US. I think Palin is so right on most issues, she could mortally wound the progressive movement strangling the country. We don't need a candidate that can "bring the country together" if it means compromise of conservative principles. Perry would do that and IMHO, Bachmann would also.

This election is far too important to allow a fast-talking, corrupt, hairdo with cowboy boots into the Oval Office. Big changes need to be made and that is going to require a leader of great strength, not someone who sells their position to the highest bidder.

Cherry pick all you want, but you can't deflect the fact that Rick Perry campaigned hard for a pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage, pro-gun control liberal in 2008 (and 1988 when he campaigned for Al Gore).

What is almost as bad as Rick Perry campaigning for a pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage, pro-gun control liberal like Rudy Giuliani, is the fact that Giuliani's lawfirm was making money by helping the state and a European company try and get the Trans-Texas Corridor pushed through.

Giuliani's law firm was representing a company in its dealings with the state of Texas while the Governor of Texas was campaigning for Giuliani. That's some Grade-A corruption right there. That's down there with Bill Clinton or Ulysses S. Grant.

Perry's actions speak a whole lot louder than some pretty speech he gave.

That was not by Perry's choice. The opt out is there now only because of the tremendous blow back from the people of Texas which forced Perry to back pedal. Perry's original plan was to make it mandatory.

In addition to the outright corruption of his financial and political interests in the issue, the moral and ethical flaws in that statist attitude on his part are doubly damning.

The man is a real orator. He had notes but he did not read verbatim.

I would love to see him debate and in the process crucify the Messiah.

He and Gov Palin are going to be hard to decide on.

And he's in favor of a program for importing farm workers from Mexico. This surely won't fly well with millions of Americans out of work.

Let's get real. We DO need a program for importing farm workers. It would need to be strictly inforced...knowing who they are, where they are etc.

Do you actually think out of work city dwellers are going to do manual labor in the hot Texas sun for minimum wage? Or well ABOVE minimum wage for that matter.

Today's young generation (for the most part) are too soft, too lazy, and too entitled to ever consider a job which requires hard manual labor, regardless of pay.

Spoken by someone with over 30 years of experience in agribusiness. Perry is right.
