Sources told ABC News a backpack in Melaku's possession contained a package labeled ammonium nitrate as well as spent firearm ammunition. Ammonium nitrate, a common fertilizer, can be used in explosives. The FBI later said despite the label, the backpack presented no immediate threat. A search of Melaku's nearby car also found no potential devices. Law enforcement sources said Melaku does not appear to have known ties to any terror organization.

In addition to his arrest today, Melaku already faces pending charges in Loudoun County, Virginia, for a rash of vehicle break-ins, police said.

Hee! Hee! Doesn’t sound like he was anywhere near the Pentagon. One might just as well say he was going to attack the White House, he could walk there just as fast. My guess is that schizophrenia has just recently claimed him. He’s about the right age for that.

Seriously, however. Like Jared Lee Loughner or Maj. Hasan, a psycho or a lone-wolf terrorist only needs two loaded guns and a crowd of innocent bystanders to make his mark.

Ever since Jimmy Carter failed to use force to stop the Mariel boatlift, every backward country in the world has been dumping it’s crazies and criminals on us. They see it as a win-win. We do nothing about it.

I keep forgetting about the boatlift. IMO the boatlift, Iran hostages, malaise factor, 18-20% inflation, etc, were what made Carter the worst President in US history. Also IMO, Carters biggest problem was incompetence.

Obama is also incompetent, but most of the things he's doing to destroy this country are by design, not accident.

Hee! Hee! Doesn’t sound like he was anywhere near the Pentagon.

First thing that hit me.

My guess is that schizophrenia has just recently claimed him. He’s about the right age for that.

That guess makes too much sense.

“Alexandria man charged in Pentagon shooting
FBI: Marine Corps reservist also linked to vandalism in Quantico, Chantilly”

by Gregg Macdonald, Staff Writer

SNIPPET: “Melaku’s backpack allegedly contained potential bomb-making materials, spent 9 mm shell casings and hand-scrawled references to Osama Bin Laden, the Taliban and al-Qaida, according to a search warrant affidavit made public Thursday.

U.S. Park Police later questioned Melaku and identified what they described as two potentially dangerous items in his possession, as well as in a red 2011 Nissan found parked in a wooded area near the Pentagon directly off routes 27 and 110. The FBI removed the vehicle from the scene for further examination.

The materials in the backpack also are undergoing further testing at the FBI laboratory in Quantico, he said.”

SNIPPET: “A search warrant affidavit of Melaku’s Alexandria apartment claims that Melaku was in possession of several materials that are commonly used to make improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, as well as a video allegedly showing Melaku shooting a firearm out a car window near the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico. The affidavit says Melaku’s voice can be heard on the video saying: “Last time I hit them they turned off the lights for like four or five days. So here we go again; this time I’m going to turn it off permanently.””

Alexandria Man Charged with Shooting at Military Buildings in Northern Virginia

U.S. Attorney’s Office
June 23, 2011

Eastern District of Virginia

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Yonathan Melaku, 22, of Alexandria, Va., has been charged with destruction of property and firearm violations involving five separate shootings at military installations in Northern Virginia between October and November 2010.

Neil H. MacBride, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, and James W. McJunkin, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Washington Field Office, made the announcement.

If convicted, Melaku faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison on each of the two willfully injuring the property of the United States charges and a total mandatory minimum of 35 years and a maximum of life in prison if he is convicted of both use of a firearm during a crime of violence charges.

“Today’s charges allege a long-term pattern of violent behavior against the U.S. military that escalated until his detention last Friday,” said U.S. Attorney MacBride. “The affidavit states that what began as a drive-by shooting at the National Museum of the Marine Corps grew to a series of armed attacks targeting multiple military installations seeking to shut them down. It culminated with Mr. Melaku’s apprehension near the Pentagon in possession of a backpack containing ammonium nitrate, one of the components used in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.”

“Great investigative and intelligence analysis on this case has brought us to where we are today,” said James McJunkin, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Washington Field Office. “The permanent partnership shared in the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force has allowed investigators to follow up on every lead and continue to pursue so many matters in this case, leaving no stone unturned. This was an eight-month investigation involving hundreds of hours of interviews, evidence collection and analysis by investigators from Prince William County Police, Virginia State Police, Pentagon Force Protection Agency, Fairfax and Arlington Police, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, U.S. Park Police and the United States Marine Corps. This is a shining example of how together we work tirelessly to keep Northern Virginia residents safe.”

According to an affidavit filed in court, Melaku is accused of engaging in a series of five shootings from Oct. 17, 2010, through Nov. 2, 2010, at the following locations: the National Museum of the Marine Corps (twice), the Pentagon, a Marine Corps recruiting sub-station in Chantilly, Va., and a U.S. Coast Guard recruiting office in Woodbridge, Va. Each shooting allegedly took place late at night or early in the morning and involved multiple 9mm rounds fired at each building. The cost for repairs at the facilities exceeded $100,000.

The affidavit states that Mr. Melaku attempted to flee law enforcement after he was spotted on the property of Ft. Myer in Arlington, Va., at approximately 1:30 a.m. on June 17, 2011. During the pursuit, he dropped a backpack that allegedly contained numerous spent 9mm shell casings; four bags containing ammonium nitrate, and a spiral notebook with numerous Arabic statements referencing the Taliban, Al Qaeda, Osama bin Laden, “The Path to Jihad,” as well as a list of several other individuals associated with foreign terrorist organizations.

Later on June 17, 2011, the affidavit states, law enforcement recovered a typed list in Melaku’s bedroom closet titled “Timer” that included nine items that are consistent with the requirements for a time power unit and firing mechanism of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). Combined with ammonium nitrate, these items would make up several significant components needed for an IED.

The affidavit alleges that law enforcement also found a videotape in Melaku’s bedroom that shows Melaku in an automobile driving near what appears to be the U.S. Marine Corps Heritage Museum and repeatedly firing a handgun out the passenger-side window. Melaku allegedly made numerous statements on the video, including “That’s my target. That’s the military building. It’s going to be attacked” and at the conclusion of multiple shots exclaiming “Allahu Akbar.”

According to the affidavit, an analysis of the shootings determined that a brand of ammunition, based on class characteristics consistent with bullets loaded into cartridges, were manufactured by Prvi Partizan, and some of the shell casings allegedly found in Melaku’s backpack when he was taken into custody were also Prvi Partizan. The affidavit states that the bullets and fragments recovered from all five shooting incidents were fired from the same firearm.

The United States Marine Corps reports that Melaku joined the Marine Corps Reserve on Sept. 4, 2007, and is currently listed as a Marine Corps reservist Lance Cpl and a motor vehicle operator with Combat Engineer Support Company, 4th Combat Engineer Battalion, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve. He has previously been awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Selected Marine Corps Reserve Medal. He has not deployed overseas.

The investigation was conducted by the FBI Washington Field Office’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, including the police departments of Arlington County, Fairfax County and Prince William County; the Pentagon Force Protection Agency; the Virginia State Police; the Naval Criminal Investigative Service; the Coast Guard Investigative Service; the U.S. Park Police; U.S. Marine Corps Base Quantico; and the Military District of Washington Provost Marshal Office. Assistant United States Attorneys Daniel Grooms, Neil Hammerstrom, and Lynn Haaland of the National Security and International Crime Unit are prosecuting the case on behalf of the United States.

Criminal complaints are only charges and not evidence of guilt. A defendant is presumed to be innocent until and unless proven guilty.

Man Pleads Guilty to Shooting Military Buildings in Northern Virginia
Defense, Government Jointly Recommend Sentence of 25 Years in Prison

U.S. Attorney’s Office
January 26, 2012

Eastern District of Virginia

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Yonathan Melaku, 23, of Alexandria, Va., pleaded guilty today to damaging property and firearms violations involving five separate shootings at military installations in northern Virginia between October and November 2010 and attempting to injure veterans’ memorials at Arlington National Cemetery.

Neil H. MacBride, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, and James W. McJunkin, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Washington Field Office, made the announcement after the plea was accepted by U.S. District Judge Gerald Bruce Lee.

Melaku pleaded guilty to a three-count information that included injuring property of the United States, use of a firearm during a crime of violence and attempted injury to veterans’ memorials on U.S. property. The defense and government jointly recommended in the plea agreement a sentence of 25 years in prison. He will be formally sentenced on April 27, 2012.

“Yonathan Melaku pled guilty to carrying out a calculated, destructive campaign to instill terror throughout our community,” said U.S. Attorney MacBride. “The video he filmed during one drive-by shooting is a chilling portrayal of his intent and the escalating danger he posed. Thanks to the FBI and their law enforcement partners, we were able to apprehend Mr. Melaku, develop the evidence that linked him to the shootings, and secure this conviction today.”

“The partnerships and resources shared on the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force are essential to the safety of our national capital region,” said FBI Assistant Director in Charge McJunkin. “I want to thank our law enforcement partners at Prince William County Police, Virginia State Police, Fairfax and Arlington Police, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, the Coast Guard Investigative Service, U.S. Park Police, Pentagon Force Protection Agency, the Military District of Washington, and the U.S. Marine Corps for their steadfast efforts throughout this investigation.”

According to the statement of facts filed with his plea agreement, Melaku admitted that he carried out a series of five shootings from Oct. Each shooting took place late at night or early in the morning and involved multiple 9mm rounds fired at each building. The cost for repairs at the facilities exceeded $100,000.

Melaku admitted today that during the second shooting at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, he set up a video camera within the interior of his vehicle to record the shooting incident. The video shows Melaku repeatedly firing a handgun out the passenger-side window, and he narrates the incident on the video and states, among other things: “That’s my target. That’s the military building. It’s going to be attacked,” and at the conclusion of multiple shots exclaiming, “Allahu Akbar,” repeatedly.

In his statement of facts, Melaku stated that he attempted to flee law enforcement after being spotted on the property of Ft. Myer in Arlington, Va., at approximately 1:30 a.m. on June 17, 2011. During the pursuit, he dropped a backpack that contained numerous spent 9mm shell casings; four bags containing ammonium nitrate, and a spiral notebook with numerous Arabic statements referencing the Taliban, al Qaeda, Osama bin Laden, “The Path to Jihad,” as well as a list of several other individuals associated with foreign terrorist organizations.

Melaku admitted that, at the time of his apprehension, he was attempting to enter the area of Arlington National Cemetery containing graves of deceased Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans, intending to desecrate and injure the grave markers by spray-painting the markers with Arabic statements and by leaving the ammonium nitrate he was carrying at the sites of the grave markers.

On June 17, 2011, during a search of his residence, FBI search teams found Melaku had stored within the bedroom closet of his residence a typed list titled “Timer” that included nine items that Melaku admitted are consistent with what would be required to construct the firing mechanism for an explosive device. Four of those items had been crossed through.

The investigation was conducted by the FBI Washington Field Office’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, including the police departments of Arlington County, Fairfax County, and Prince William County; the Pentagon Force Protection Agency; the Virginia State Police; the Naval Criminal Investigative Service; the Coast Guard Investigative Service; the U.S. Park Police; U.S. Marine Corps Base Quantico; and the Military District of Washington Provost Marshal Office.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Daniel Grooms, Neil Hammerstrom, and Lynn Haaland of the National Security and International Crime Unit are prosecuting the case on behalf of the United States.

Virginia Man Gets 25 Years for Shooting Spree
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Jan. 12, 2013 – Yonathan Melaku, 24, of Alexandria, Va., was sentenced yesterday to 25 years in prison, followed by 10 years of supervised release, for damaging property and firearm violations involving five separate shootings at military installations in Northern Virginia between October and November 2010 and attempting to injure veterans’ memorials at Arlington National Cemetery, according to a news release issued by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Neil H. MacBride, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, and Debra Evans Smith, acting assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Washington Field Office, made the announcement after sentencing by U.S. District Judge Gerald Bruce Lee, the release said.

On Jan. 26, 2012, Melaku pled guilty to a three-counts that included injuring property of the United States, use of a firearm during a crime of violence, and attempted injury to veterans’ memorials on U.S. property. The defense and government jointly recommended in the plea agreement a sentence of 25 years in prison, according to the release.

“Yonathan Melaku is a self-radicalized terrorist who carried out a campaign of fear that escalated until his arrest,” MacBride said in the release. “He took calculated steps to target specific military buildings, cover up his crimes, and plan even more destruction should his message not be heard. This sentence is just punishment for the danger he poses to our community.”

“The partnerships and resources shared on the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force enhanced the investigation into the multiple shootings that threatened our region and ultimately resulted in today’s sentence,” Smith said in the release. “I want to thank our law enforcement partners who make up the JTTF including Prince William County Police, Virginia State Police, Fairfax and Arlington Police, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, the Coast Guard Investigative Service, U.S. Park Police and Pentagon Force Protection Agency, as well as the Military District of Washington and the U.S. Marine Corps for their dedicated work throughout this investigation.”

According to court records, Melaku carried out a series of five shootings from Oct. 17, 2010, through Nov. 2, 2010, at the following locations: the National Museum of the Marine Corps (twice), the Pentagon, a Marine Corps recruiting sub-station in Chantilly, Va., and a U.S. Coast Guard recruiting office in Woodbridge, Va., the release said. Each shooting took place late at night or early in the morning and involved multiple 9 mm rounds fired at each building. The cost for repairs at the facilities exceeded $100,000.

During the second shooting at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, Melaku set up a video camera within the interior of his vehicle to record the shooting incident, the release said. The video shows Melaku repeatedly firing a handgun out the passenger-side window, and he narrates the incident on the video and states, among other things: “That’s my target. That’s the military building. It’s going to be attacked,” and at the conclusion of multiple shots, exclaiming “Allahu Akbar,” repeatedly.

Melaku attempted to flee law enforcement after being spotted on the property of Fort Myer in Arlington, Va., at approximately 1:30 a.m. on June 17, 2011, according to the release. During the pursuit, he dropped a backpack that contained numerous spent 9 mm shell casings, four bags containing ammonium nitrate, and a spiral notebook with numerous Arabic statements referencing the Taliban, al-Qaida, Osama bin Laden, “The Path to Jihad,” as well as a list of several other individuals associated with foreign terrorist organizations.

At the time of his apprehension, Melaku was attempting to enter the area of Arlington National Cemetery containing graves of deceased Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans, intending to desecrate and injure the grave markers by spray-painting the markers with Arabic statements and by leaving the ammonium nitrate he was carrying at the sites of the grave markers, the release said.

On June 17, 2011, during a search of his residence, FBI agents found Melaku had stored within the bedroom closet of his residence a typed list titled “Timer” that included nine items that Melaku admitted are consistent with what would be required to construct the firing mechanism for an explosive device, the release said. Four of those items had been crossed through.

In interviews with law enforcement after his arrest, Melaku said he targeted military-associated buildings to send a message that the U.S. should not be involved in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and to intimidate those who supported U.S. involvement, the release said. He planned to desecrate nearly 2,400 grave markers at Arlington National Cemetery and leave ammonium nitrate at the scene to instill fear in the public. The release said he stated that he planned further crimes, including blowing up a military fuel truck, if his message was not heard.

The investigation was conducted by the FBI Washington Field Office’s JTTF, including the police departments of Arlington County, Fairfax County and Prince William County, Va.; the Pentagon Force Protection Agency; the Virginia State Police; the Naval Criminal Investigative Service; the Coast Guard Investigative Service; the U.S. Park Police; U.S. Marine Corps Base Quantico; and the Military District of Washington Provost Marshal Office, according to the release.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Daniel Grooms, Neil Hammerstrom and Lynn Haaland of the National Security and International Crime Unit prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States, the release said.
