Social Security: The politically powerful American Association of Retired Persons has finally admitted that the federal government's fiscally doomed entitlements must be fixed. Let Democrats call Paul Ryan extremist now.
On Friday, the AARP officially decided, after what was reported to be a tumultuous internal confab, that it will no longer irrationally stand in the way of the government reducing Social Security benefits.
The group immediately tried to make little of the change, issuing a statement Friday claiming that "Contrary to the misleading characterization in a recent media story, AARP has not changed its position on Social Security."
The AARP also said, "Any changes to this lifeline program should happen in a separate, broader discussion."
In other words, give AARP a seat at the negotiating table in some big deal on the future of Social Security, Medicare and maybe other things too.
But moderate Democrats such as the Third Way group in Washington were beside themselves with glee. They told the New York Times that it was "a watershed moment," and now that the AARP has "opened the door to reform, it is time for lawmakers to walk through it," as Third Way President Jonathan Cowan put it.
The biggest political winner, of course, is House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., whose bold plan to save entitlements through free-market reform has obviously translated into pressure on the not-an-inch position AARP has held over so many years.

They have "got" it all along.
Yes, give the AARP a seat.....in another room.
And the ad I just saw on TV attacks Congress for looking at Medicare and Social Security. The ad was filled with lies to scare the unknowing seniors.
LMAO
The new debate:
We need to cut benefits but we can’t allow those evil republicans to do it.
Next time you get a letter from them with a postpaid return envelope, fill it with the other crap from an equally-evil mass mailing and send it to them. Bankrupt them.
Here it is, using seniors to make the unknowing believe the needed cuts to those bloated Ponzi Scheme entitlements will hit old people. Noting by a lie.

Why does anyone care what they think anyway? We’re beyond the point of being able to worry if someone likes the fixes or not.
AARP has been soliciting me for 18 years. Haven’t joined yet and not going to.

Plus, Zero wants to campaign on SS reform, gotta lay the groundwork.
This was reported on the national news this evening. Only they’re still reporting that socialist security is solvent and will be for another 25 years. We switched the BS TV “news” off. Again.
I bet the ad was by Moveon.org
Believe it or not, AARP has 37 million members and carries a lot of influence, unfortunately mostly in favor of liberal Democrat policies.
Yep. Saw the ad yesterday. Total fabrication, lying to seniors.
Ten bucks says they are ceding this on social security ( the one entitlement not addressed in the Ryan budget). So Obama can run out there and cut social security benefits...with the blessing of AARP. Both will still continue to attack ryan and the republicans as heartless. Scum.

Me too, and everything I get from them goes right through the shredder
That's because the democRATS would like to cut benefits to those that saved for their own future, and increase them for the deadbeats that voted for - you guessed it - democrats. They want to redistribute SS, rather than distribute it based on what was paid in, which is the only fair method.
