NBA gets highest marks for racial and gender hiring
South Florida Sun-Sentinel ^ | June 16, 2011 | Craig Davis

The NBA received the highest grade ever issued on racial and gender hiring practices among men's professional leagues, continuing a recent trend.

The league received an A+ for race and an A- on gender for a combined A in this year's Racial and Gender Report Card from the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport at the University of Central Florida.

While the NFL and Major League Baseball have shown significant improvement on racial and gender hiring in recent years, the NBA is the only men's pro league to receive a combined A. TIDES has been studying diversity hiring in sports since 1987.

This is a gag post, right?

It’s so utterly ludicrous on the face of it that it must come from The Onion.

Really; any time someone gets high marks for “diversity”, you have to ask, “from whom”? Or, more bluntly, “From which side”?

The NBA is the toast of blacks & women because the majority of their players & fans are black men, and they are able to subsidize a women’s NBA (which is nothing compared to the men’s, but jobs are jobs) unlike men’s soccer.

Perplexing.

>> TIDES has been studying diversity hiring in sports since 1987.

Which explains why European teams whip the a$$es of the NBA all stars?
They don’t even make the Gold medal game anymore.

NBA = inferior product. Overhyped.

Never heard of the U of Central Florida.

You need to get out more. It's been around for 48 years. The football team won the Conference USA title a few years ago.

At first I was thinking, “Another make-belive institution from the fevered brain of John Semmens.” But I looked it up. It does exist!

And by the way, it carries the name of DeVos. If that’s Rich DeVos, he happens to own the Orlando Magic.

Ummm, it’s from John Semmens, who is notable for writing Onion-grade material. Intentionally, by the way!

I understand the “racial” (the NBA is 95% black so all is well racially) ... but what’s with the “gender” thing? I haven’t seen a lot of ladies shooting from the 3 point circle. Maybe they are talking gays or something?

From Lapchick’s Wikipedia page: In 2009, the Rainbow/ PUSH Coalition and Rev. Jesse Jackson honored him for “lifetime achievement in working for civil rights.”

If his goal is to limit white males, he should start with himself but that will never happen.

Think just a little bit. Don't engage in the parts to the whole or whole to the parts fallacies.

A team that consists of players from many different teams assembled quickly for a special competition isn't going to be as good a team as one that has had those same players playing together as a team for years.

Which is exactly why USA Basketball completely revamped itself after the 2004 Athens debacle. In Beijing, they were back to kicking the rest of the world’s behind.
