Perry Road-Tests A Stump Speech
National Journal ^ | 18 Jun 2011 | Reid Wilson

NEW ORLEANS, La.--Republican activists have waited all week to see a front-running presidential candidate. When Texas Gov. Rick Perry took the stage Saturday, they may have finally gotten their glimpse.

In a 20-minute address to about 2,000 activists at the Republican Leadership Conference, Perry decried the Obama administration and even Republicans he blamed for "apologizing" while touting his own record with remarks that sounded conspicuously like a stump speech.

"This administration in Washington that's in power now clearly believes that government is not only the answer to every need, but it's the most qualified to make the most central decisions for every American in every area," Perry said. He called Obama's approach to the economy "an affront to every freedom-loving American and a threat to every private sector job in this country."

"I stand before you today as a disciplined, conservative Texan, a committed Republican and a proud American, united with you in the desire to restore our nation and revive the American dream," he said.

Though he has adamantly denied an interest in running for president for years, Perry's attitude has changed in recent weeks. He has reportedly dispatched aides to Iowa to feel out the political situation in the home of the crucial first caucus. Now, his biggest supporters believe he is likely to enter the presidential race.

"I do think he'll get in. And it won't be because he wants to, it'll be because he thinks he needs to," said Bill Crocker, chairman of the Texas Republican Party. Crocker introduced Perry to members of the Republican National Committee at a luncheon in Dallas last month.

I agree, forget his record just listen to his words.../S

I can not believe how many people are treating Goodhair as a Conservative and winner...

We have not had a decent Governor candidate in at lest eight years... We voted against Kay Bailey rather than for Goodhair. He only received 35% of the vote in the preceding election...

Perry has had very little to do with the Texas situation other than he has not tried to destroy it after he was taken to the woodshed over his corrupt attempt to jam the TTC down our throats...

“I was surprised at the strong support he has among some of the most conservative Texans I know.”

You obviously do not know my family and friends...

I will say this, the some Texas conservatives, DO not like him!!

There, fixed it. See, I know some Texas conservatives who love the guy and you don't speak for them or even a majority of Texan conservatives who seem to have returned this guy to office three times!

Would you at least agree he beats the following: Current OBOZO, Mittens Romney and Chris Christie?

LOL...

It is hard to find the perfect candidate, especially among those who chose to run. Perry has done some things I don't like. (And more things I do like.) Same with Bush. Even Reagan did things I disagreed with.

I believe we have a pretty good field, with only one confirmed RINO. On a ten point scale with McCain a 2 and Reagan a 10, I would put Perry around 6-7. Romney as a 2, Palin and Herman Cain as 9's, Pawlenty as 5-6. Obama is about minus 42 on this scale.

I try to follow Reagan's Eleventh Commandment (most of the time). We have lots of good to say about most of of our candidates. It is too early in the process to discard any of them. Please don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

I voted for Perry all three times he ran, given the people who ran against him I assume most sane Texans did. I would vote for Perry, if he runs, in 2012 over anybody that is in now. I think he is much better than any declared candidate that is in the race now. I do not see a perfect candidate in the race now as Pawlenty, Cain, Paul and Bachmann all have weaknesses that I believe will keep them from winning. I think it may come down to Romney or Perry, unless Palin gets into it. I would vote for Perry in a heartbeat if that were the choice before me. I could be all wet, but that is how things look to me.

He actually got 39% of the vote that year and had Scott McClellan’s Mom, Carole Keeton McClellan Rylander Strayhorn, running a RINO revolt campaign against him. He still beat the ‘Rat Bell by around 10%. Scott’s Mom got 18% and Kinky Friedman got 12% of the vote that year. I think he did very well under the circumstances. That was an entertaining election campaign.

Perry is definitely causing some excitement that I have not seen other candidates do. I look forward to hearing more from him.

“I will say this, the Texas conservatives, DO not like him!!”

I will say you speak for yourself, certainly not for ALL Texas Conservatives.

Of course a Gov. Medina would be liked by all, right?”

Palin took a hit for endorsing Perry and Jaun McSuck as well.

“And we will do what it takes to sink him, both in the primaries and the general election if he makes it that far.

If the GOP sticks to the left in 2012, then there will be a viable third party by 2016.”

Compassionate Republicans are bad as Democrats, they need to go Away!!

Looking like anything on Perry has FR’s fringe right having a collective dyslexia storm or maybe just a collective ronpaul dementia episode.

Stay at it, you all are really impressing and influencing.
