NBC dumps 'God' from Pledge of Allegiance (Poll)
The Kansas City Star ^ | June 19, 2011 | Lisa Gutierrez

Posted on 06/19/2011 3:23:35 PM PDT by Brandonmark

NBC golf commentators just apologized for a big oops that has people fired up all over the Internet.

In a patriotic, rah-rah-America video that opened NBC's coverage Sunday of the U.S. Open Golf Championship, the reading of the Pledge of Allegiance by a group of children in a classroom setting ommitted the phrase "under God."

This was the abbreviated version: "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, with liberty and justice for all."

The kids can actually be heard reciting the pledge twice; the second version leaves out "under God" and "one nation," too.

Immediately, viewers cried foul, taking to Twitter and comment boards, calling NBC "scumbugs" and pledging to boycott the network.

Later, NBC commentators apologized to viewers who had been offended.

The media's attitude towards religion reminds me of an exchange deleted from that appallingly anti-Catholic (and anti-religion, generally) film, Angels and Demons

Father Simeon: "People will think--"
Cardinal Mortati: "What we tell them to think."

Actually you cannot “dump” Under God from the pledge, if you leave the phrase out, it no longer is the pledge.

They also left out the word INDIVISIBLE! So, maybe while they are showing their anti-Christian bias, they are promoting secession?

The phrase “one nation under God” does not contain a comma and the words “one nation” modify “under God”...so our pastor teaches to not pause during the phrase “one nation under God” as is the common practice.

Oooooo. Please, please, please, go for it.

"But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: for men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away, for his name is Obama."

Contact Comcast's CEO Brian Roberts

brian_roberts@comcast.com

Here's what I wrote:

The Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy, who was a Baptist minister and a Christian. It was amended in 1954 to include the words, "one nation under God". I find it completely unacceptable for NBC to have omitted these words from the Pledge and in doing so offending Christians around the country, myself included. I find it even more unacceptable that your weak apology precluded the word "God" as well.

I have been an avid viewer of NBC broadcasts for most of my 53 years. But I refuse to support any network that willfully disparages Christians across this nation as NBC has done. Moreover, I am and have always been willing to contact sponsors notifying them that I will no longer purchase the products and/or services of any company who advertizes on such a network.

I am recording the US Open as I have always done. I will use my recording to make sure I do not miss a single NBC sponsor in my effort. Additionally, I will be writing letters to many newspapers in the Southern California area. With circulations in the millions, this will ensure your offensive actions will be known to more than just those who watched the Open.

Good luck selling your anti-God campaign to the scant few Americans who agree with your position that the Pledge should not include the word “God”. You have alienated me and many millions of Americans forever.

Sincerely,
South40

There are a huge number—the vast majority—of Liberals, Leftists, progressives, democrats, socialists, and even communists in the Western world's News Media.

Never forget that they HATE us—the conservative, the religious, the patriotic, the free. People like us stand in their way of whatever control they want to have for themselves over their fellow man.

We are in a culture war. They just went on an offensive. This is direct action on their part. It was VERY deliberate.

They think they are right, and the rest of us who want UNDER GOD left in the Pledge of Allegiance are just a bunch of stupid, right-wing, racist hicks and rednecks.

They're high-fiving in the control room.

However, he does run a multi billion dollar organization with many moving parts.

Please do not put this on him but, rather make him aware of this offense.

He is a completely good man and would not have approved this slight of our Pledge of Allegiance.

NO one actually believes any of the language of the pledge anyway, what difference does it make that they leave out the language.

The next step is for someone to introduce a new pledge of allegiance to the world-wide hive and the one-ness and fulfillment of being a drone.

Not 20 minutes before the on air denial of intentionally leaving “God” out of the pledge, Johnny Miller and the other guy were bragging about how mature Rory Mcilroy was for the way he handled himself after the Masters by being honest and not making excuses about what happened to him during the last round. Then without a studder step, NBC shows all of us how much more class Rory has than those in charge at NBC by denying responsibility for their actions.

On January 14, 1969, Red Skelton presented "The Little Old Man" on his television show. It was the story of his teacher, Mr. Laswell who talked to the students after they had just finished reciting the Pledge of Allegiance:

"Boys and girls, I have been listening to you recite the Pledge of Allegiance all semester and it appears that it has become monotonous to you or could it be you do not know the meaning of those words. If I may, I would like to recite the Pledge and give to you a definition of the words.

I----meaning me, an individual, a committee of one.
Pledge----dedicate all of my worldly goods to give without self pity.
Allegiance----my love and my devotion.
To the Flag----our standard, Old Glory, a symbol of freedom. Wherever she waves, there is respect because your loyalty has given her a dignity that shouts freedom is everybody's job.
Of the United----that means that we have all come together.
States----individual communities that have united into 48 great states. 48 individual communities with pride and dignity and purpose, all divided with imaginary boundaries, yet united to a common cause, and that's love of country.
Of America.
And to the Republic----a republic, a state in which sovereign power is invested in representatives chosen by the people to govern. And government is the people and it's from the people to the leaders, not from the leaders to the people.
For which it stands!
One nation----meaning, so blessed by God.
Indivisible----incapable of being divided.
With Liberty----which is freedom and the right of power to live one's life without threats or fear or any sort of retaliation.
And justice----The principle and quality of dealing fairly with others.
For all.----which means, boys and girls, it's as much your country as it is mine."

Since I was a small boy, two states have been added to our nation, and two words have been added to the Pledge of Allegiance "under God." Wouldn't it be a pity if someone said, "That's a prayer" and that would be eliminated from schools, too?

Unfortunately, I didn’t get all of it recorded. Those sponsors mentioned in the part that I have are:

BMW, Mastercard, FedEx, Scottrade, MetLife, Lexus, Bayer, Mazda and Covergirl.

Also, there is a lot of talk on the internet of boycotting NBC and its sponsors. I'm hoping someone else has a list they will share that is more comprehensive than mine. I’ll let you know if and when I find it.

Either way…don't you just love the large amount of negative attention the story hath wrought on NBC? :-)

I initially wrote NBC, both the Sports Division and the CEO. My letter to both you have seen in post #13.

Today I received a response from Chris McCloskey, Vice President, Communications, NBCUniversal Sports & Olympics Here is what hew wrote and my response to it.

Thank you for writing regarding your concern over the beginning of our U.S. Open coverage on Sunday.

We are aware of the distress this has caused many of our viewers and are taking the issue very seriously.

Unfortunately, when producing the piece – which was intended to capitalize on the patriotism of having our national championship played in our nation’s capital – a decision was made by a to edit portions of the Pledge of Allegiance.

This was a bad decision.

As soon as management became aware of this decision and the controversy it justifiably created, it immediately took steps to correct it resulting in an on-air apology provided by NBC Sports’ lead golf commentator Dan Hicks.

It was not the intent of NBC to upset anyone and we sincerely apologize to anyone who was offended.

Thank you again for taking the time to voice your concerns.

Sincerely,

Chris McCloskey
Vice President, Communications
NBCUniversal Sports & Olympics

______________________________________________________________________

Mr. McCloskey,

Thank you for your response.

As I am sure you are aware, the 'apology' offered by NBC rang hollow with many, myself included, and it did so for two reasons.

1) The word 'God' was omitted from the apology also confirming in my mind that NBC just refuses to use the word 'God', be it in the Pledge or otherwise. Why is that? What does NBC find so offensive in the use of that word? You do realize, do you not, that recent polls have shown that 85% of Americans identify themselves as Christians. Additionally, Jews, Muslims and many others of varying beliefs use the word 'God' so they were possibly offended as well.

2) The apology was not an apology for omitting the word 'God', it was rendered, it seems, only because NBC realized it had offended so many. This leads me to believe, and I know I am not alone in my beliefs, that NBC is not sincere in its apology for attempting to usurp an act of congress ('God' was added to the Pledge by congress in 1954) but NBC only regrets having offended and alienated so many.

You said NBC has taken this issue seriously. Could you please share with me what punishment, if any, the 'small group of people' will face for having deliberately offended millions of NBC viewers? I own a company --- if anyone within the ranks of my company made a decision that was so adversative to company policy and in the process offended millions, resignations would be due. So what actions will NBC be taking? Will the 'small group of people' have committed this egregious error with impunity?

Again, I thank you for your response but am sorry to say that I still believe, as do many, that NBC's apology was intended as damage control only and not as an atonement for the intended and deliberate affront to the majority of Americans who watch TV sports. Real actions, in the form of firings or resignations, are due. Please impress me, Mr. McCloskey; please convince me NBC is sincere.

Regards,
South40
